A rebel strike against the Imperial dockyards at Nabal has failed. After a chaotic battle, one brave rebel pilot remains....
Thank you for watching The Chase! I definitely tried a lot of new things with this short, mainly doing a lot more character animation than I've never done before. This all took around six months to finally put together, and I wanted to get it out while Andor was still airing, so I've made it just in time!

@@That-No-Moon of course it has artificial grav systems, just like almost all other ships in Star Wars. That is way different than a hyperdrive inhibitor grav-well generator. As for why the Supremacy or whatever it is called didn't have any: I thought that the FO changed to a mobile fleet doctrine after their big base was destroyed. The Supremacy or whatever it was named served as a mobile base for its entire fleet. Maybe they were so confident in their ability to follow their prey anywhere they went that they didn't think that big gravity well generators/hyperdrive inhibitors would ever be necessary. Plus that might be more intimidating. The Holdo maneuver wasn't supposed to happen. If I accepted the sequel trilogy as canon, I would have to say that it only worked because of an anomaly that changed reality in that area.

Interestingly, a *lot* of rebels deserve credit for this escape. Pilots were the most scarce and valuable resource the rebellion had, and they abhorred the Empire's strategy of throwing lives at a problem until it disappears, so they leaned hard into training Rebel pilots to their peak and equipping them with the best fighters available. The A-Wing shown here is basically a Porsche with custom upgrades. They also chose their battles accordingly, launching surprise attacks against lightly defended targets where they'd be unlikely to lose too many irreplaceable pilots and fightercraft. Clearly something went disastrously wrong. And yet, this is the payoff. A pilot escaping to relay first-hand what happened could be critical to preventing a similar disaster in the future.

Funnily enough, all the way back in the DOS sim X-Wing, it was mentioned that Tie Fighter pilots had reported that the A-Wing could, in fact, shoot backwards. This wasn't included in the sim but was used as a bit of lore. Of course, the higher ranked officers scoffed at the idea and did everything to deny it as they knew it could do a number on morale.

"Any pilot who volunteers to fly an A-wing better be brave or crazy. Probably helps to be a little of both." -General Han Solo. You did an excellent job evoking these personality quirks using only facial animation. You put more acting effort into this A-wing pilot's eyebrows than the entire cast of the sequel trilogy. I also love that you brought out the swiveling cannon modification many A-wings had, then left it in the rearward facing position leaving the audience to wonder if it ever swiveled back. A very meta detail fans would recognize as this modification often led to jamming until it was repaired.

@@unincognito3689they failed the sequel trilogy, dishonored George Lucas and what he has created and destroyed one of the best characters ever; Luke. Rogue One was really great because of luckily competent people who created it. Same with Andor now. CW S7 was great but not because of Disney. Disney actually wanted to cancel CW S7 because they are anti Star Wars/just stupid/or whatever. A very very high demand lead to the creation of S7 by the original guys. But everything else… The Bad Batch and The Mandalorian still actually pretty good, Boba Fett already way worse (with too much talking like the actor said, cringe chases with meaningless, soulless cringe woke trash characters, cringe fights, etc.) but with good scenes with the Slave 1 or fight against Cad Bane. Visions is for small girls. Tales of the Jedi again by the original guys with old animation, etc. but way too short. Kenobi was complete trash with one of the most iconic, most famous and objectively best characters just dishonored and trashed. Rebels sadly underperformed because they made it for very young kids. CW is fine but they messed up Rebels to show it on their kids channel. Characters were never alone and never developed (Zeb not at all). There is always an annoying Ezra or Chopper to ruin everything. Maul was fine (I loved it when he slaughtered the cringe ass flying inquisitors) but in the episode in which Maul and Obi Wan fought again Ezra was there to do nothing but taking screen time from Maul and annoy. Also the episodes were structured very similar. Got just boring very fast.

Amazing storytelling, emotion, action, drama, and direction for this short film, and it didn't require endless exposition or any voiced lines! Loved this thank you!

This proves it, fans know how to make Star Wars films over the people over at Disney. It's well made, it would make a great part for a larger animated Star Wars film.

I love the absence of any dialog, and still the team managed to convey the story. That’s the issue with recent movies - actors are saying what they are doing.

This was fantastic! Did you mocap the pilots movements and/or do performance capture? The pilot was one of the most realistic CGI characters I’ve ever seen. Everything just worked together wonderfully.

I may be pro-Imperial at heart but this is solid work. Really love how much effort was put into the rebel's expressions, too. Really tells a story of its own without need of dialogue. ... still hope for some pro-Imperial films from ya at some point, though. =P

First. Awesome work. Got to see a fight from the pilots point of view. A lone A-Wing pilot outnumbered and outgunned but achieves the impossible and is able to escape to fight another day. Seeing the blasters on that a wing rotated 90° to kill the Tie fighters chasing him first time I’ve actually seen that and probably the first thing on screen we knew of this feature but just never got to see it

This team should be leading the next Star Wars film, not these chuckleheads currently mucking everything up. Incredible work, thank you for sharing your obvious passion and talent. So well done. Small stakes overall - just a pilot trying to make it out of a lost battle, which is nice for a change as opposed to another galaxy destroying weapon. There's an immediate connection to the main character and a deep desire to see them succeed, even though we know nothing about them. Will one pilot survive against these odds after all their companies were killed? The outcome was undetermined, which made the intensity of the small stakes even greater. The music felt like something new from John Williams and accompanied the scenes perfectly. Action was incredible and well choreographed. The views from A-Wing's fuselage made you feel like you were in the dogfight. This felt like what Star Wars should be.

makes it ***less*** impressive if you know what that speedy little stunt fighter is truly capable of. it's actually canon in star wars that A-wings have taken out capital ships. because "MUH GAME BALANCE" people tend to forget that concussion missiles can absolutely take out hardpoints on a star destroyer or something comparable. pop the reactor or something important and watch it burn.
