Mulan is one of the most famous animated films made by Disney, who recently released a trailer for the live-action remake. So far, people’s reactions appear to be mixed, partially on the basis there won’t be any songs or talking dragons. A lot of you have asked, how is this trailer received in mainland China? We hit the streets of Beijing to find out.
The opinions expressed in this video are those of individual interviewees alone and do not reflect the views of ASIAN BOSS or the general Chinese population.
Special thanks to our Asian Boss team in Beijing, China. This video crew is provided by the Asian Art and Film Foundation. Please support their documentary project on Asian American Politicians ►

Mulan 2020 is okay action form Jet Li is amazing. But the first Disney Mulan is innacurate, and that the Mongols took over China and succeeded. And that representation even though the original Mulan legend is FICTION. I still don't like the representation of the Mongolians as bad guys, its war everyone is the bad guy. And they don't look like Mongolians, they just look like stereotypical asian bad guys. BUT THERE IS ALREADY A GOOD MULAN MOVIE FROM 2009 AND IT IS WAY BETTER. Plus im Mongolian.

Well it's hardly surprising. Why should western schools spend time teaching students about the Ballad of Mulan, when Mulan as a historical figure played no part whatsoever in shaping western history? You only have so much time in primary school. Priorities have to be made, and thus it's only more sensible to focus on historical figures more close to home. Mulan should be more of a subject taught as an option in university for western students.

In China, people mainly talk about the wrong makeup and houses. Mulan lived in the Northern Wei Dynasty(386-534AD), but her makeup is Tang Dynasty(618-907AD) style. The Mulan family's house is Fujian’s/Hokkien characteristic. Fujian is a coastal province in southeastern China. But Mulan lives in northern China.

Sounds like the same mistakes Marvel did with Black Panther, where the cultural artefacts were a completely nonsensical mismatch given the geographical location of Wakanda. You could tell that continental Africans weren't the target audience for that movie. Like, for example a character would wear jewellery from both Mauritania and Ethiopia - complete opposite sides of the continent from each other and Wakanda - as if they were local wakandan traditional attire. Maybe it'd make sense if they were cultural imports after long-term cultural exchanges throughout the centuries, but Wakanda was supposed to have been culturally cut off from the rest of the continent for 3000 years. As an African, it really irked me. I couldn't stop laughing during the elders-at-the-waterfall scene. Even in sci-fi, things need to be somewhat coherent, otherwise it takes you out of the story. Even worse when it's a well known historical story like here. I read on English-speaking Weibo that the Mulan make-up was trending in China atm though?

@@lsamoa As a fellow African, albeit a heretic city-dweller, I paid no attention to the cultural accuracy or otherwise of the Back Panther film. I had no expectations of consistency whatsoever and simply watched it for the entertainment and inspirational value, as I do with all superhero movies. Yes, I was put off by the accents but what else could we expect from Americans, really? They have not once gotten that right, so it would have been mind-blowing if they succeeded on this attempt. My only issue was with the CIA dude playing any positive role whatsoever in the film. I thought that was incredibly insensitive, unrealistic, and monumentally stupid, given the history of the CIA on our continent.
@lsamoa
@lsamoa 5 жыл бұрын
@@maelstrom2313 Agreed about the CIA agent, I reacted to this as well. I don't know. We shouldn't be expecting much from Hollywood as you said, but that movie was so hyped up about being so African, that I was expecting a bit more from it. Hiring continental Africans as advisers would have helped. At least in The Avengers they managed to make Sokovia look somewhat Eastern European. Anyway, I hope this version of Mulan gets it right.
@maelstrom2313

@@lsamoa The fact is as a population we contribute virtually nothing to the revenue Hollywood, so the consequences of getting things wrong will be negligible to them for a long while. The only thing we can do to change that is build our economies up to effectively have a voting share in their decision-making process. Until then we will have to accept whatever scraps they throw out to us, unfortunately. Once we have economic power, we will be able to hold them to account. Let's work hard and smart so our kids and grandkids will not have to put up with this. To be honest, I'm not particularly concerned about Mulan, that's for the Chinese to care about lol.

What’s a westerner?
@steve8610
@steve8610 4 жыл бұрын
@@DanielGarcia-pw9oz "Westerner" or just "the West" refers to two different, but overlapping, categories. On the one hand, "Westerners" is a (usually) Eastern Eurasian term to refer to the Western European countries, such as England, France, Germany, Sweden, and so forth. The term has sometimes been used by Eastern European countries too, but it is largely been used by East Asian countries. Because of this, "the West" is sometimes used synonymously for "Europe" as a whole, including Eastern European countries, like Russia, Estonia, Finland, and so on (usually to contrast them with "the East", ie, China, Korea, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, etc.). On the other hand, "Westerners" can also refer to those living in the planet's Western hemisphere, which is basically the North and Central Americas, such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, Greenland, etc. However, people generally use this to refer to the United States in this context. This can be "overlapping" in that some people include "Westerners" (under the first definition) to include countries heavily influenced or founded by Western European countries, such as the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as the Spanish and Portuguese colonies that eventually became the countries of South America, which mostly fits with the second definition. TL;DR, a "Westerner" is usually a native resident of Europe or North America.

Another one that comes to mind, although much smaller and less altering to the movie, were the small changes made in Spirited Away. To me Mulan is so special among all the Disney Princesses because she is not a princess. She is perhaps one of very few, if not the only, who did not live in a castle, inherited or possessed any special magical ability, had a fairy godmother or insane good looks, changed her fate by winning the heart of a prince nor lived happily after as a princess. Mulan is simply a girl who fought her way through then returned to her family and lived on as herself.

I just stated the same, this is the first movie, where its trueely allowed Chinese freedom and culture in hollywood, without tainting the experince with a white or black co star.. or just lying and changing the culture making the movie cheesy with white actors.. like that matt damon movie, the great wall.. that couldve been incredible but they decided to put matt damon in their completely westernise the movie, a white guy just made it so cheesy and fake.. forbidden kingdom with jet li and jackie chan.. also the same ruined byt a white guy making it cheesy, bullet proof monk the same.. list is endless.. they all had so much potential, but that was hollywoods forcing that upon them. crouching tiger hidden dragon... and EXCEPTIONAL MOVIE, not westernising, no white guy thrown in just to be racist lol... this is the first step of opening up the closed western minds

I felt the same when Aladdin came out. If you guys didn’t know, the main city in the story was actually meant to be called Baghdad (capital city of Iraq). However, due to political issues and and downright injustice and the fact the west doesn’t want to give any credit to our culture and history, the name was changed. All they want is our oil and to wipe our contribution to the world. In fact, historically speaking, modern day Baghdad is the cradle of civilisation. When they released the movie trailer I was so angry. Indian dancing, Indian clothing, American accents, they found the whitest looking Arab to play Jasmine. It was terrible. I’m still angry.

Basically GOOD traditional morals as human beings.. The west as we know today.. Is a modern culture than has been created through media,, MUSIC popular music.. Started with Elvis.. When he first appeared he was shaking his hips on tv and the world went crazy... It was too sexual.. So they only filmed him frok his waist up.. Ok slowly over time this modern popular cultre became worse and worse pushing the boundaries and making generations feel upset but later only for it to become the norm... Now western culture is sex gangster violent selfish dog eat dog driven.. Now lets talk eastern culture.. They never followed that.. They never lost their core values.. All the devotion to family. Loyalty. Respect honor is STILL intact.. So basically its traditional morals and culture that needs to be implemented on society to help the future of people. You sound very whitewashed brainwashed bybthe western modern popular culture yourself. The typical reaction of whatever Chinese do is wrong.. Westerners do it right under your nose and you just bend over and take it.. Lol. Dude you dont understand the topic enough this isnt about chinese vs west.. Thats also stupid western mindset.. Personally I wish the characters had spoken Chinese instead of English, even if Disney is the one producing it. I'm a huge fan of Wuxia films and I find the Chinese language so beautiful, so when the trailer first launched I was a bit taken aback by the fact that the characters spoke English. Even though I knew it was a live action remake it still didn't cross my mind they'd have Chinese actors speaking English. It would have imo made the film infinitely better if the characters spoke in their native language, and the film had subtitles. The rest of the world will have subtitles regardless, so I think it's high time Americans learn to read them as well ;) (yes, I know many Americans watch foreign films and aren't opposed to subtitles at all, but I also know the main reason foreign films aren't successful in the US is the fact that people don't like reading subtitles. Same probably applies to the UK or any other English speaking country, but since Disney is an American company....)

Personally, I’m excited for the film to come out simple because I’m intrigued by the more serious direction they seem to be taking with the live action version by choosing not to incorporate songs and other elements from the original. Kids are required to learn English as a second language, usually! Two of my cousins from Guangzhou have been learning English since they were very young. One is 13 and her English isn't that good lol, but it's at a basic level and I understand her, though she doesn't like it haha. My other cousin who's 18 is excellent at English and has went abroad a few times. I guess it also depends on how dedicated you are to learning it...

@@Snsdhyoyeon100 Yup. It's pretty clear from him talking about Asians in general, instead of approaching the topic purely from the perspective of a Chinese person. Like a lot of people in the States probably don't realize this but Asians in Asia generally don't think of themselves as part of a group with other Asians, sort of like how we wouldn't think of ourselves as part of a group with Mexicans and Canadians, so his choice of words there was pretty significant.

From someone who grew up in Canada, but is ethnically Chinese, he’s definitely also someone who grew up in a western country. Progressive is not a usual word to replace in a sentence and he would only replace that if he couldn’t think of the Chinese translation of it. And from his mannerisms and his slow speech, that’s someone who’s fluent in both languages l, if not more so in English than in Chinese.

@@user-qu6xp3jq4c yeah, I think he would watch the film, based on how much the producers got the story right. When I first watched the trailer, I wasn't expecting Mulan to be like the Disney film. Personally, I expect it to look like a Chinese Wuxia film (something that reminds me of the Chinese stories I've heard or shows I watched, like The Untamed). When the producers said they want to stick more to the book, I don't really mind, I really want to know how it will turn out😅. But, when the movie was shown, many people are beginning to boycott it because of locations where it was filmed, the main actress, the inaccuracies, the poor character development, and, from what I've read, the people who made the film are all white. I understand why they wanna boycott it, but I still want to see the movie for myself, it just looks cool. I mean, yeah, I want to see how the film would portray accurate Chinese culture and elements, but at the same time, I wanna watch it because of the story too. And that's just my opinion😅.

NEVER have a heard that before, in every movie interview the chinese actors are never happy with hollywood movies. they force their western ways and values onto them.. The director of this movie, never forced anything, and everything was a debate and all ideas welcome. the chinese loved her and praised her.. and she did equally the same.. this movie apart from the no cinema viewings ect.. the movie itself i think its a fair potrayal for the first time ever. adn itll be the first big step of chinese values and culture spreading through out the world..

Tank1 I mean I’m sure they appreciate the director as this is a big step up. Like showing the world a bit of chinese culture but it really isn’t accurate... appreciated the effort but really as a movie from Disney, they could’ve tried setting everything correctly. However we can’t complain. This isn’t supposed to be a documentary. It’s a movie. Nothing has to be that accurate. Just the basic idea is good enough. But the extra effort to research would’ve been really appreciated...
@gamer3d147

ComaBerenices I watched this movie with my whole extended CHINESE ethnic family(even Grandparents) they weren’t offended in the slightest. Thought it was a good movie and appreciated the effort Hollywood made to show mainstream media a couple of talented (chinese ethnic) actors like donnie yen. It is rare to see any Asian actors here in America. People say it shouldn’t matter what race the actor is but srsly, all Asian Americans are left out of the American film industry example is Chloe Bennet who’s real name was Chloe Wong and changed caused film makers had a less chance of casting her cause of last name. So I mean, in that sense, I’m sure all Asians in general at least appreciate an asian representation in mainstream media. The dialogue seems cringey but I think they made a good attempt at translation. If u read the captions, it sounds poetic in chinese(chinese captions) most Americans do learn Chinese history, (well now, so most millennials, gen z and anyone under 50) should know chinese history regarding the eras and knowing they have different clothes. And come on, how accurate do u want this film? It had a god damn shape shifter in it lmao. That should show the fantasy element in it and it’s an overall fiction. We don’t want to watch a documentary. It’s a movie. So there has to be fiction in it. Gonna admit, even chinese people don’t really know the clothing differences of the different area, it doesn’t make much of a difference if others didn’t know too.

@@gamer3d147 Dramatisations will always have technical inaccuracies, because of time constraints and the need to portray certain messages, motives, emotions or thoughts effectively on screen. The argument that this is not a documentary is simply a short-hand for saying that not everything needs to be so accurate when conveying a narrative through a drama.
