天龙八部 = The Battle Wizards... lmao. The Chinese name sounded way more bad ass. Unless I've mistaken, it means 'Sky Dragon Eight Parts'. It's a popular Chinese novel, and this film is a loose adaptation. Love the wacky vfx and Pewd's commentary lol Edit: I learned that 天龙八部 actually means 'Veda, Naga, the eight legions'. It's supposed to be the eight types of immortals in Buddhist mythology. The official translation of 天龙八部, 'Demigods and Semi-Devils', sounds about right.

The author of the original novel on which this movie is based on, Jin Yong/ Gum Yung 金庸 or Louis Cha, just passed away very very recently. I’m from Hong Kong and I can tell you that people of all ages, literally all ages have read his books, which were an incredible blend of martial arts, Chinese history, philosophy and deep characterization. His works were very impactful in the Chinese-speaking world and is well known by many people. Many classical TV series and movies produced in Hong Kong were based on his books as well. I know That Pewds is fond of books, so I’m definitely recommending some of 金庸’s great works: Legend of the Condor Heroes, the return of the condor heroes, and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. They are definitely worth a read.

This is made by a legit film company from Hong Kong based on a very famous chinese book (I guess you can call it the sci fi of china). A lot of the weird stuff like jumping to escape is totally normal in chinese action movies, but the bone lazer and snakes are meant to be fantastical and bizarre

I’m Chinese and immediately knew what the finger attack was, and the character by extension based on him sleeping around lol. Most Chinese people are so familiar with this story that there doesn’t need to be a lot of explanation for anything, and the plot is actually very predictable. Using snakes as 暗器 (hidden weapons), 轻功 (the jumping around), and 斗气 (battling chi signified by lasers between two people) are all very common in wuxia, which is a very big and developed genre with its unique elements that are so familiar to a Chinese audience that we don’t give any of this stuff a second thought. What you think makes this film special isn’t all that special except for the editing and the sfx that came from a time period when Hong Kong film first had the technology and tried to use it every way they could. I wish I could see the movie with fresh eyes like you have, but instead see it in the same light as movies you’re frustrated with: too predictable. I’m a little surprised that after watching all that anime, you don’t see any similarities. 轻功 is similar to how they travel distances in Naruto for missions, jumping from tree to tree. The jump cut scenes are just a creative way to represent it without having to film the actual process for older or low budget films. 斗气 is like in certain battles when the chakras of the characters become visible and are pushing against each other. Kishimoto didn’t come up with all that stuff out of nowhere.

The movie is edited badly but the original book is really intriguing so I highly recommend Felix to read it. I couldn’t put it down once I started to read it. The original book belongs to Wuxia category, which is basically the most important genre of Chinese novels, and the author, Jin Yong, is considered the best write of this entire category for generations. He passed away in 2018 just as Stan Lee, and to me he is basically the Chinese version of Stan Lee
