Your video isn't cinematic, sorry. Cinematic has to be the most improperly used word in the filmmaking youtuber world. What does it even mean? All these short 1-2 minute videos titled "cinematic" and it's just a collection of boring streetscapes or emotionless and meaningless scenes. People actually think having the background blurred out is cinematic. Shooting at f1.4 isn't cinematic, it's often distracting and weird looking.

Good Morning my cinematic friend! Ha! Just as you said "it's all blurry, what happened. A KZfaq said it would be cinematic", an advertisement jumped in for the Google Pixel and it's "cinematic blur"! LOL! This point you're making is spot on by the way. If you're vlogging don't you want to show where you are? Yes, it is! A nice extra as you know, is that when you stop down you increase your DOF and zone focus becomes easier making it more likely you are in focus. Loved this gem of a video. You use silliness to teach. That is good. Have a great day!

What makes movies get that 3d look you are used to, is from using long focal lengths. Majority of OTS dialogue scenes are shot at over 100mm equivalent. Most youtubers don't have the space inside and its hard to film yourself at this length, so its not used very often. I have been toying with shooting at 135-150mm for face shots and I am loving the look I am getting. And NO you don't have to stop down to the minimal T/F stop to get the look you want.
@jaegerschtulmann
@jaegerschtulmann Жыл бұрын
And nope you got it wrong, the greats like Deakins prefer focal lengths that are closer to the human eye perspective like 40mm. Lighting, is far more important to achieve the look than the lens.
@jessecumberledge4530
@jessecumberledge4530 Жыл бұрын
@@jaegerschtulmann Deakin is my hero. Also can't argue with you about lighting one bit. It is and will always be the most important part of any shot ever. But for majority of hollywood the OTS shots are done at longer focal lengths, the compression really gives a 3d look and allow the actors eyes to really come to life. Yes Deakins shot 1917 with a 40mm prime, he didn't want to change much because the movie is supposed to be a ONER and he didn't want the distortion change. That said there are director and DPs that prefer wider angles. I have no problem with that. I still stand by what I said. If you want a OTS closeups you should experiment with 100mm+ focal lengths. Its kinda like a cheat code for depth... but like you said you can't cheat lighting!

if a focus pull were possible with a one man crew that would solve the problem. Get the background established then focus on the subject. Truly cinematastic. Also it all depends on your goals. If your goal, like many vloggers is to assuage your raging narcissism, then of course you want everything else obliterated in the background so that only your beautiful face (the only important thing really) is in focus.

In my opinion shallow depth of field has to be chosen under the circumstance of its requirement to support the storyline, or a specific look that film maker wants to create. Not all the shots with fully opened aperture looks great, but we can guide the audience eyes to what is important in the frame. Shows like Euphoria utilized shallow depth of field to its best. Good video bro liked it very much. Your contents are fun to watch

A lot of problems can be solved by asking why. Context can keep people from saying, "I need a wider angle lens so I can get everything, but I want a 1.4 so I can blur out my landscape view because someone told me it's cinematic." When the fundamentals of, a time and a place for everything, is seriously lacking.

With depth of field comes the challenge of composition, because you are not hiding anything everything is part of your image and if your composition isn’t right you’ll never have a balanced image / scene. So where a shallow DoF has its place, more DoF requires more skill.

The thing is, with many "cinematic" effects like for example a subject following, any cool perspective changes etc you often have to rely on expensive tracking stuff for example a circular or straight frame where your camera slides smoothly on it and at best motorized. As this one youtuber, i forgot his name, he has his camera literally mounted on a super expensive robotic arm with 4 or 5 axis, allowing ANY movement for even better advertisement and showcase videos than the real manufacturer produced. Or just look at those camera cranes with IMAX cameras on it for hollywood productions etc, thats some serious expense.

And regarding taking video of people ... I've done some testing and apart of full body shot shooting below F2.8 makes no sense. Because even your subject is not fully in focus. Faster than F2.8 shot might make sense if it makes the story. For example the dream shot at F1.4 or faster lens might add to the story. Or you want to show isolation of your character.
