WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotel prices especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.

It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!

I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).

I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZfaq Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I have a special place in my heart for Newfoundlanders ever since 9/11. There is a small town there named Gander that landed all the planes in the air when the US had to close the countries airspace. They more than doubled their population in a matter of hours. The citizens used their own money and fed, housed and clothed thousands of people for days and refused anything for it. The plane people later took up a donation and had enough to send a great many of their children to college for free. There are still young people going to school from that donation as far as I know.. Thank you Canada! And Newfoundland! And Gander! From a US citizen❤️🤗🐝

The Tickle Trunk store may be named after a feature on a kid's show that CBC ran all across Canada in the 1960's and 70's, called Mr Dressup. The show's host was played by Mr Ernie Coombs. He stored all the costumes in his Tickle Trunk, would get one out every show and do a role play with the show's other characters and several puppets. My sister and I used to watch the show, it was fun for kids. Glad you're having fun on Da Rack.

The Tickle Trunk is a reference to the famous Canadian kids show, Mr. Dressup. Ernie Coombs entertained millions of children for 29 years; one of the recurring scenes was retrieving clothes from the tickle trunk.

12:20: Quick story about the Newfoundland Railway: The entire system on the island was narrow-gauge (3'6"), but after the war (when Newfoundland joined Canada and the NR became a part of CN Railroad), all the stock became re-bogeyed standard gauge stock from the mainland until the railroad was abandoned in 1988. Loaded cars had bogies switched at Port Au Basques, where the rail ferry docked.

The Railway Museum was the only station in St. John’s. When I was a student here in the 1970s it was also the terminus for the cross-island buses so I had many the Friday afternoon dash from the university campus to the station to catch the bus home for the weekend! Thank you for this video…it captures so many of the reasons why we love living in town.

We went to Tromso Norway last year which was awesome, and really reminds me of St. John’s. If you haven’t been yet, I recommend it. Best to go in feb for the polar nights and northern lights

a “tickle trunk” is a reference that nearly every Canadian over 40 knows, as a reference to “Mr. Dressup”; a kids TV show in the 80s/90s whom had a “tickle trunk” to store various costumes he would wear on the show.

The houses in St. John’s are beautiful inside. I was in one with a third floor picture windows so you could see right out through the Narrows. One of my best photos is sunrise through the Narrows and Signal Hill in complete darkness from the Hotel Newfoundland.

A bit of railway trivia: 1988 is also the year the Canadian National Railway withdrew service from Prince Edward Island, my home province.

Passenger trains ceased operations in the 1970s in Tasmania, and in 2011 on Vancouver island. Also on Vancouver island, Englewood Railway was the last operating logging railroad in North America, it stopped running after a deadly derailment accident (no pun intended) in 2017.

I'm a Canadian subscriber of yours but have never visited the maritimes. Thank you for sharing this historic part of my (very large) country with me! Those small mountains around St Johns were, millions of years ago, part of a mountain range that extended upwards to Scotland. On your next trip to Canada, I can recommend Quebec (and Quebec City) and many regions inside of BC.

Greetings from Ann Arbor! St. John's looks like such a wonderful place to visit. I love the colorful homes and landscape. Also, as a former owner to a Chocolate Lab the history of this dog breed being valued in this culture. I never knew about the large immigration of Irish to the area so nice to learn something new.

Molasses is a by-product of sugar refining (either sugarcane or sugar beet) and it's a healthier substitute for refined sugar. I'm from Queensland, Australia where there is plenty of sugarcane and molasses is fermented and then distilled to make rum.

Newfoundland is such a great place, and such great people! We went in late May 2022, and still found many attractions closed for the season - BUT, we definitely beat the summer crowds. We drove across the whole Island - the west coast is definitely worth a visit: the national park, the coast, the ferry to Labrador, the viking settlement. You really need a car, though. Thanks for bringing back memories!

My maternal grandparents came from the Carbonear area in 1897, and settled just outside Boston. I visited the area a few year ago, and met some cousins. It was very rewarding.

I lived in St John for 3 yrs in the early 80's. You brought back a lot of memories gor me. Rode the train to Port a Basque with my parents who were visiting from Scotland. It was called The Newfie Bullet. I also lived in Montrose so love your vlogs from there. Thank you.

Wooden houss make sense in such high latitudes, they last a long time.

It is obvious, they are much quicker, cheaper and easier to build than brick houses. Even in Greece all the houses were wooden, one day all the trees were chopped down, and they started making bricks, they still used wood to burn the bricks though. Even in the UK, most houses were wooden until well into the 1400s, in Norway most houses are wood, some city apartment buildings as well. Same thing in Sweden and Finland, but there they often cover their outer walls with brick. Denmark however is like 'UK, they ran out of wood, and have been building real brick houses for hundreds of years.

@@peroldenI know for a while that 40% of the new housing in Scotland was timber frame not sure what it is now. Whether our wooden houses are as durable as Scandinavian ones is another matter!

There's a lot of Scottish history in Newfoundland because they built the Newfoundland railway. Ny father in law's family (Reid) was one of them - his family originated from the Reid clan on the highland borders near Perth in the mid 19th century. Edit: ive never heard St. John's called fogtown tho it very obviously is, even after 25 years being married to a Newfoundlander.

That was a very enjoyable look around Steve. Those colorful houses remind me of the island of Burano in Venice. Well, without the canals. And with the Mooses!

I clearly emigrated to the wrong North American country 21 years ago. That Greek food looked great! I’d have got that $16 taco/fajita kit and somehow figured out how to cook it. Good call on St John’s looking like San Francisco - before you said that I was thinking it kind of reminds me of outer sunset in SF where I am - colourful houses, hills and permanent fog. Except there’s more to do in St John’s :)

Thanks for the tour of St. John’s, my late dad used to talk about it often along with Halifax as he visited them often serving on HMS Icarus an escort destroyer in the last world unpleasantness. He told the tale of the crew saving their tots of rum in a bottle with raisins on the way to Canada, once ashore getting a liquor licence and a large bottle of Coke and having a session before the journey back. His little ship was involved in many operations but didn’t get many mentions, The Bismarck hunt, evacuation of Spitzbergen, operations Harpoon and Pedestal to supply Malta, “occupation” of Iceland and many Russian convoys many of which mustered on Loch Ewe, we visited the Artic Convoy Memorial on one of our many Scottish holidays. He was based at Scapa and just before D-Day was transferred to the Royal Naval Police in Glasgow, he joked, or maybe not, that it was more frightening than the convoys.

Absolutely loved this episode. Newfoundland has a special place in my heart as some of my ancestors hailed from there. I’d love to travel there one day, this was the next best option
