@@LiteratureScienceAlliance where would you recommend starting?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
Delphinium Reads depends on what you are in the mood for. The City We Became is a good starting point if you want her authorial voice with more straight forward prose and plot. The broken earth trilogy is the best thing I have read in years but it uses second person which doesn’t work for everyone and it has a large number of trigger and content warnings. I have a recommendation video for her inheritance trilogy which I also love but its not a traditional trilogy. I have not read her duology yet. Basically there is no bad starting point just pick the story/setting that speaks to you ☺️

I love this video so much!!! You summarised your thoughts so well and I agree with everything you said!! I think bronca was my favourite character as well!! And I loved the map as well, I'm usually take it or leave it with fantasy maps as well but I loved that map!! I loved learning more about new york as a city!!! And the diversity in the book was amazing, race, age, sexuality, background - it just had EVERYTHING which made it such as amazing story and I think captured the spirit of new york really well!!

Brightness Katy Reads Bronca was just so amazing granted I liked a lot of the avatars. I want more time with Queens cause I think she is the one I relate to the most with the math background and love of food 😆

Butter instead of cheese... it works for the metaphor
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
Michael Knipp broccoli and cheese is so much better for child Angela than broccoli and butter so thats probably why my brain went there. I do think the prologue is not a good reference for the character work you will see in the book sense that was more a concept exploration. Thats probably my biggest complaint honestly and I wish she chose I different prologue than reusing the short storyz

Amy Myers N.K. Jemisin is changing everything about fantasy in the best ways. The female representation and social commentary in this book or amazing and in her broken earth trilogy the main character is a middle aged mom...Also I can say having read a lot of fantasy or plots and world building are probably unlike anything you have tried. She is just amazing and I love her so like if you do only pick up one fantasy book this year I highly suggest picking one of hers up!

@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
djungeltea then pick up the fifth season by her!! I promise it is very dark and heavy, also if you are an American I feel like the city we became touches on society themes we deal with all the time that are our dark underbelly but I do think it approaches it by highlightening how everything isn’t like that. Although moments made me very angry cause it was too real lol
@djungeltea4 жыл бұрын
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance Fifth season is actually already on my TBR! Now it got bumped up higher though :D Yeah maybe I wouldn't be able to relate as much to this one if it touches on alot of American societal issues 😅
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
It depends haha I have a friend from the UK who loved how much she was able to learn about NYC from this book which is also something I really enjoyed. I just think its darker themes is very centered around our racial tension and xenophobia issues here in the US

This book *was* really fun. I do feel like I need a sequel soonish because, though it does end at a satisfying point, there is a lot of unresolved stuff I need to see resolved. Who says Cleveland isn't a city? Want a city that isn't a city? Try Vergennes, VT, population 2600. Also, people need to get over second person.
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
Ron Payne I literally have had to defend Cleveland city status everywhere I go lol its a struggle. And I wish second person wasn’t such a turn off for some people but I can understand if their brain just doesn’t mesh with it. There are lots of authorial voice techniques that make my brain much even if they are good no matter how much I read brains are just weird sometimes 🤷🏽♀️

Enjoyed the review. It's interesting, Idk why I don't consider Jemisin's writing to be character-driven. I think she makes very memorable characters, but I remember her most for the worlds/ magic systems she creates.
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
Thistle & Verse I think this comes from me having most recently read The Inheritance Trilogy which I felt was very character driven. But you are right when I think of Broken Earth I do think of the world building first, but then I think of Essun and how real she feels to me. And with The City We Became NYC is the world it is because of the people so two birds with one stone in this one. But I thought about this a lot on my walk so thank you for this though provoking comment!

@@GalacticReads Have you read other works by her? I also really love what she does with different narration structures in her other books. No latinos?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
There is one major character who has a Portuguese heritage and the City of Sao Paulo plays a major role but none of the introduced avatars are only hispanic. It is implied that some avatars may have mixed heritage like Manhattan but for the most part its native american, Indian, african american, mixed ambigous, and irish american. Who represent the primary 5. Also its literally nothing like urban fantasy I have ever read its just by definition fantasy set in our world. So I wouldn’t let the genre label scare you away if you find it interesting!

People say that Cleveland isn't a city? Strange lol. I do really like the sound of the avatars in this. Possibly spoiler? I don't know: I had seen some mention of like Lovecraftian/cosmic horrors in this and meant to ask you about your thoughts on that. I'm..not super big on Lovecraft stuff. Do you think that's a fairly accurate description?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
krakentoagoodbook so Jemisin also does not like lovecraft. She had a fascinating discussion about it in an interview. So I do not read lovecraft horror but although there are creepy scenes and a reference to lovecraft it did not feel like that genre. The villain is actually one of my favorite villain personalities. So I would not let that deter you!

@@LiteratureScienceAlliance I think I may have seen something on Twitter about that, but I can't remember. That's all good though! I'm glad it doesn't have that feel. I read the short story this morning and I can't decide lol.

Curious if it would be better to read this after visiting NYC? Would there be a benefit to visiting New York before reading this one?
@LiteratureScienceAlliance4 жыл бұрын
So I don't think it matters but I do think it will always be a different experience when reading a contemporary setting if you have been to the place. Like I have been to NYC but only the touristy parts in Manhattan so this was great for me to learn about the other Burroughs in NYC that I really knew very little about. On the flip side I did have a friend who thinks she loved it even more because she has been there so I think it works either way.
