We're all familiar with Lyndon Johnson's Civil Rights Bills, but what got him there? This video explores why it took Lyndon Johnson, a son of the south who had never supported Civil Rights in his life to get it done.

Note: While Wilson and Eisenhower were each born in the South (Virginia and Texas respectively), they were both mainly associated with other areas of the country and weren't considered Southern politicians.

Wilson, having prior been president of Princeton University, was one I associated with New Jersey, though he spent some time as a kid in Augusta, Georgia. As for Eisenhower, he was an officer much of his life, and I know officers move around a lot (my father was one), but I don’t know how common this was before WWII.

Yo,suggestion:A video on the rise and fall and rise of Harry Truman, how he was a nobody, became president, made the most difficult decisions, got blamed for the Korean war,was so unpopular when he left office, yet his legacy rehabilitated and he is known as one of the best presidents

I personaly think of nixon as the most interesting post WW2 president. He's trurly a real life figure of a tragic play, man chasing ambition and wanting to build a lasting legacy, who flights to close to the sun and suffers the worst and most poetic fall out of the moder president.

@@BosnianBEAST-ky9xvI agree. I think that’s why there’s this resurgence of Nixon content too, along with Nixon’s acumen on foreign policy and how our current geopolitics is playing out. Though I wouldn’t push it to say he’s going through a “re-evaluation.” Vietnam is still hard for him to shake. I would also add that LBJ too really suffers greatly in reputation due to Vietnam.

LBJ is truly a fascinating man. Although his racism and personal demeanor really suck sometimes, some of his ideals are really noble. His quote “it is not just Negreos but all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry”, really says something about him. I think he understood his biases and always wanted to be better than them, a principle we can all live up to.

Footnote: There was a 2/3rds rule that was in place for the Democratic Conventions from 1832 to 1932. This rule required a Presidential Nominee for the Democratic President to have the support of 2/3rds of the delegates. This rule forced the Democrats to essentially choose "compromise candidates", someone who can appeal (or not be too offensive) to both the Northern Liberals and the Southern Conservatives. Sometimes, there were compromises or concessions made to get a faction to support a nominee. For example, promising a candidate a Cabinet Post or maybe even Vice President. Cleveland, Wilson, and FDR were the only Presidents from 1869 to 1932, that were from the Democratic Party. FDR eliminated the rule in 1936, which made his nomination for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th term easier. Truman won the Presidential Nomination in 1948, because of his incumbency. Stevenson won the nomination in 1952 because he was Truman's choice for a successor. 1960, showed JFK winning the nomination, by winning the primaries. LBJ ascended to the Presidency, through "the back door".

I can't help but feel your channel will continue to be on the up and up. Incredibly well put together doccumentaries which include such a clear demonstration of knowledge and care. This video perfectly illustrates why Johnson is my favourite President. Many percieve it as a negative but I love seeing ambition unchained and shrewd maneuvering in politicians - people who know what there is to be done and how to achieve it. He's such a fascinating figure, and if it wasn't for the major (and impossible to ignore) blemish which is the Vietnam War I think LBJ would be the universal exemplar of a President. Playing for time and patience seems to be so under appreciated in a contemporary setting but I see it as the marker of someone who knows how to achieve what they need.

While John F. Kennedy was known for his speeches, Johnson was known for his actual policy results. What Johnson lacked in terms of Kennedy's polish, he made up for with devastating political instincts. Johnson's domineering, non-compassionate persona combined with his legislative know-how enabled him to implement a policy record the scope of which rivaled FDR's New Deal. Kennedy gave us timeless quotes, but Johnson gave us new laws in the statute books.

I personally never gave Lyndon Johnson enough credit, and had no idea of his upbringing and personal challenges he faced and overcame to get to where he was by 1960. Truly an American story, the 1960 presidential ticket, the young, clean cut, calculated, Northern John F. Kennedy and experienced, ambitious, Southern Lyndon B. Johnson coming together to unite the Democratic Party (for the most part) many things were done during the Kennedy administration’s time in office. What followed Kennedy’s assassination in November, 1963 and Johnson’s election as president in 1964 was truly remarkable, his passing of the Civil Rights Act that year fundamentally changed the lives of millions facing racial segregation in the South. While the battle to demolish the old racist antebellum ways was slow going, it’s thanks to 36th President Lyndon Johnson for the laying of the important groundwork. His courage and commitment to upholding his predecessor’s legacy by passing that very act, I often wonder if this important moment would’ve been squandered had it been another politician in his shoes. It is very sad that his legacy was significantly tarnished by his administration’s rather poor handling of the conflict in Vietnam in the years that followed. Also I was just curious where this full clip came from at 3:02-3:08

Love your video ! I know LBJ is a great statesman, but overall an amazing politician (who knew how things work) but I had never heard the part about his sympathy for minorities due to personal experience. His legacy, like Nixon with Watergate, is tainted by the Vietnam War but while I’m currently reading a book about FDR, I don’t know who was the greatest politician in his day. Btw I’m sure it’s a pure coincidence (especially since the main story and thesis are different) but this is somewhat like a sequel to the video by William C. Fox about Truman ‘s civil rights law.

The two most fascinating presidents to me are Woodrow Wilson and Richard Nixon. The accomplishments they both achieved were instrumental in the development of today’s world. Yet they both were so deeply flawed to say the least and made colossal mistakes near the end of their terms that marred their legacies. Both were incredibly bright, politically savvy and forward thinking, yet dark legacies on racial issues with the southern strategy and the segregation of the federal government. Both are profoundly interesting. I also love the oft-underrated John Adams!

Wasn't Woodrow Wilson from Virginia despite being the governor from New Jersey?

LBJ was one of the biggest kissasses to rise to the Presidency. Professional Son to Vinson, Rayburn, and Russell. He was the #1 person Eisenhower turned to in passing legislation. He was JFK's Vice President. However, LBJ was also one of the most powerful of Presidents. He acted like a "coach", teaching the liberal wing of the Senate, certain parliamentary tactics to out-manuver the Southern Democratic Wing. (For example, always having members present for a quorum call.) He was bribing legislators, by offering them (and their allies) key government offices. He had J.Edgar Hoover, as a prime source of information . At one time, LBJ had a file on every single US Senator..what their likes are, dislike, etc.... And of course, he used the JFK assassination as a rallying cry... (Lets do it for Jack!)

One of the reasons I'm a Republican is due to how progressive we were and seeing how democrats actively striped rights from minorities disgusted me

It’s a real shame that LBJ’s legacy turned out the way it did. The political legacy of “big government liberalism” that started with FDR may very well have continued to today if Vietnam never happened. New deal democrats fundamentally changed the way people view the role of government. On the brighter side of things, democrats today definitely seem less afraid to “tell it like it is” about current institutions, especially SCOTUS who FDR scolded and started the whole idea of court packing.
