My Pop Pop recently passed and many months ago he asked me to play this song on my violin at his funeral. The memorial service is this Saturday and I played along with this beautiful recording to get a feel for what it will be like with the accompanist on Saturday

A wonderful example of true Americana. It never ceases to amaze me that the a species capable of creating such beauty can also be responsible for the most depraved acts of cruelty and barbarism whether in peace or war. Such a conundrum.

Absolutely lovely. I would not change a single thing. Perfect tempo and chords, and your "touch", playing it perfectly as a lament. This is just "dreamy", and I have just listened to it for the third consecutive time. Now it's time to share it with friends who also appreciate beautiful music. 😊 💖

Gorgeous piece, truly captivating performance....your gentle tempo is very reflective of dreams dashed, a simpler way of life lost, and lives sacrificed to a struggle that still resonates today with unrest and polarization. Good to hear you playing and sharing your music again. :)

Well... except that "Ashokan Farewell" has nothing to do with contemporary world politics and, especially, absolutely Nothing to do with the American Civil War, other than that Ken Burns obtained permission from Jay to use it as recurring theme music for his 1990 PBS "Civil War" miniseries. Jay composed it in 1981, as a lament and waltz, and originally for fiddle/violin accompanied by a second fiddle and guitar, in one weekend, to express his sadness and melancholy after he and his wife, the amazingly versatile musician and singer Molly Mason, had ended their annual summer Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp, held in upstate New York on the shore of the Ashokan Reservoir, for another winter. I really hope that, one of these years, all of those who love this beautiful and bittersweet waltz will one day learn the true story of it's origin, rather than the popular-but-contrived story about it being some "fiddle song" that Civil War soldiers on one or both sides played in their camps. I believe that the true story is much more endearing, emotional, and lovely. 💖⚘

@@conradinhawaii7856 Reread the comment - I refer to the tempo and interpretation of the piece as a reflection of remembering times past. There is no concrete association with the Civil War meant.

My reading skills are quite intact, thank you. The "interpretation" that you have mentioned is strictly your personal one, and not at all reflective of anything that Jay intended to portray. You have read Far too much into it, as have many who have commented here.

Well done! Having just suffered a few covers that completely miss the point that this is a lament, at last a cover that edges a tear into your eye. A good performance is about the expression, not the technical complexity or flowery embellishments. Take a bow.

lovely played fantastic tempo and feeling. . the slight hesitation in tempo makes it much more dramatic you can feel the tension.. I am learning to play it on my electric guitar it's a bit tricky to capture the feeling Ungar gives with his violin as a guitar you don't have the in between frets nauces but somehow you did it with your piano! !!

Very beautiful and I think better than my piano cover. I thought I had the only one and then I found yours as a suggestion for me to listen to which I did and really enjoyed hearing another piano version. I noticed our recordings were very similar in length and tempo. It is probably one of my favorite songs ever since I heard it on the PBS documentary over 25 years ago.
