Live on Tyne Tees show "Alright Now" in 1979. This is time-stamped but in better quality than what is already on KZfaq. Also, the only other version of The Israelites on KZfaq doesn't have the original footage, only the audio.

There's a hell of a lot of Clash live footage on KZfaq... But this is excellent , the guitar sound & phasing is really good - I don't think they ever played 'Israelites' at a concert ? ( but it was done at soundchecks).

It is absolute gold and for both of you wondering about the presenter doing backing vocals ..........Denis "Den" Hegarty (born 13 September 1954, Dublin, Ireland) is a rock and roll, doo-wop and a cappella singer, television presenter, and now a psychology lecturer at Exeter College and with the Open University, but he is still singing. He has fronted an a cappella band called Slackapella, plus a 15-piece outfit called Soul Traders, and he still sings with the doo-woppers, The Metrotones.

I discover that they have taken this wonderful song "the Israelites" whose original often accompanies documentaries about The Clash! But hear it sung by themselves after the fabulous "hate and war" live version ... WoW ... this video is a treasure! thank you +++

In which Documentaries has it been used ? Thanks .. Around this time it was one of their 'warm up/sound check' numbers . Unfortunately Strummer,who rarely got his own lyrics correct when on stage was unlikely to get 'the Israelites' in any order ! They were struggling to write new tracks around this time ( hence using a cover of 'Pressure Drop' and an earlier track '1-2 crush on you' as b sides & reactivating 'Capital Radio' & a cover of 'I fought the law' on the Cost of living e.p. )

Just another incredible performance by The Clash. They have never truly received the respect that they deserve...to me, they are one of the top 3 bands of all time...behind only The Beatles and The Who. RIP, Joe...and Long Live THE CLASH!!
@juicicles5881 Жыл бұрын
Clash is way better than the Beatles? Most underrated band ever vs most overrated. That's quite an interesting combo. The Beatles didn't play live after 1965. Lennon made them stop because he hated how much they sucked live. He talked about it in an interview. Mostly, how Ringo could not play live. He also admitted that all of the TV performances were tapes because they had a drummer that couldn't keep time. Back then, bands did not play to tapes on TV. It made him kinda mad. The other guys understood that girls liked Ringo and it sold them a lot of records. George was with John on quitting playing live because it would ruin their reputation within three songs if they did. The fact that only John has ever been publicly honest about it? I hope that makes you respect them less. It should Meanwhile, The Clash and The Who both kill it live so I love them more. The Rolling Stones, too. Especially when they had Mick Taylor on guitar. That era of theirs (late 60s through late 70s) was awesome.
@stephenstone848011 ай бұрын
@@juicicles5881 The Clash would have laughed you out of the room if you told them that the Beatles were overrated...but since they're not here, I will do it for them...and your story that they stopped touring because "they sucked" is a fabrication. They stopped because they did not have the equipment to play such big stadiums...50,000 screaming fans, they couldn't even hear each other...it was just chaos...and after getting threatened in the Philippines and all of the crap they took about John's "more popular than Jesus" quote, they decided it just wasn't worth it...and then they went on to create Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, and Abbey Road. Not only that, let me mention that they played 7-8 hour gigs 7 nights a week in Hamburg, Germany in the early 60's...know any other bands that have done that? You may not care for their music, but anyone who says that the Beatles are overrated just doesn't know a damn thing about rock 'n' roll...
@juicicles588111 ай бұрын
@@stephenstone8480 Actually, John specifically said that the reason they didn't was the drummer couldn't keep up in an interview. He didn't want to damage their reputation. Which is def overrated, as George's most famous solo was played by someone else on the record, too. Clapton. I follow rock and blues guitar closely and I've never heard of anyone else not playing their signature stuff on the album. :)
@andchat624117 күн бұрын
@@juicicles5881 the main reason the Beatles stopped playing live was due to: exhaustion of endless travel , the poor quality sound of playing open air gigs , the constant screaming of audiences - this was before bands playing stadiums was 'standard' , & they wanted to spend more time in the studio to record pop music that had never been achieved before . Playing 'Tomorrow never knows' , 'Sgt Pepper lp , Magical Mystery tour tracks was simply not possible live . Rather like 'the Card Cheat' ,'Something about England' & other tracks of 'SANDINISTA!' by the Clash not played live ...
@andchat624117 күн бұрын
@@juicicles5881 of course the Beatles could play live . and the Rolling Stones while an exciting band live were hardly musically sophisticated ...not many listen to 'Love You Live' , 'Still Life' , the awful 1990 tour lp 'Flashpoint'(?) & those that have since followed including the Hyde Park snooze fest ....

Clash live performances tended to tilt to the shambolic side: vocals out of tune/vocals over-projected; tempos too fast; Mick Jones using too many effects on his guitar, etc. (Glyn Johns, who mixed the Clash live album "Westway To The World" , said, "The bass player was on another planet!") The Clash were a great studio band. The myriad subtleties on "London Calling: & 'Sandinista" could never be reproduced in concert as an improvement on the original recordings. The Clash's studio work is where it's all at.
