Nah it's Jones - vocals, lead, rhythm, arrangements, jumps and skips. He would fill the sound if Joe stopped playing to just sing or interact with the crowd. I saw them 5 times and it's Jones's guitar you hear, Joe's guitar was a buzzsaw filler to make that big sound.

What a great drummer -- to not rush the tempo when you have the other three guys going nuts....
@BabyBoomerChannel2 жыл бұрын
Very insightful - so true. Mick and Strummer wanted to take off sprinting - and the drummer pulls them into alignment - and so the melody can be appreciated without turning into a mess.

I love the very simple driving force of the drums, so much energy, yet, as BabyBoomerChannel said, (to paraphrase) He keeps the train on the track wile still driving it forward.

I love that they played everything faster in concert. This song is tough because Mick hardly gets any time to breathe. There has to be vocal support from the others on the "Monday, Tuesday ..." section, because he's just sang the verse and has had no chance to take a breath. It would not surprise me if the Clash took stimulants (amphetamines, cocaine, etc.) before their shows, because their material is exhausting to play! Skinny little Topper Headon is a fucking POWERHOUSE drummer! Using "uppers" to put on a better show is a tradition that dates back to the Beatles in their pre-fame Hamburg era. I'm not recommending it -- better not to be in a band at all, than to get hooked on cocaine! Or heroin, as poor Topper found out. Anyway, the Clash still rule! Joe Strummer was a visionary, but I am definitely a Mick Jones man. Mick was the fine craftsman that brought a touch of beauty to their hard-edged music.

+Ben Culture Mick Jones was the man - the McCartney to Strummer's Lennon
@gymnastix8 жыл бұрын
+LeGrandeOrange Well put, LeGrande. And it WAS necessary for someone to reign in Joe Strummer's Marxist rants just as was necessary for Paul McCartney to offer those pop hooks and "silly love songs" as a balance to John Lennon's bent toward self-imporant "message" songs. But even Lennon at his most self-indulgent wouldn't make one leave the room the way a purely Joe Strummer Clash song did. Some of us liked our "phony Beatlemania," you see. And for die-hards of early Beatles music, we never heard that "London Calling" about the Fab Four having "bitten the dust." My political philosophy has certainly evolved since I first heard (on records in 1977) The Clash, then first heard and saw the band live in February of '79. I was never specially political anyway. And to me the best punk was Blondie, The Ramones, and The Undertones; The Jam if I was feeling a bit more cerebral. What I liked most about punk rock was the pure sonic rush, plus its restoration of short-and-sweet pop tunes (thank you, Ramones) after a decade of overly long and self-flagellating guitar solos, and manufactured disco. But I may still appreciate The Clash on a purely musical level, at least for their first three albums and early 45s, plus what little good material (maybe two songs, and one of them's a cover) from "Sandinista!" and "Combat Rock" (exactly two songs). I don't even count "Cut the Crap"as the real Clash, without Mick Jones and "Topper" Headon.

I realize now more then years back what an all time great The Clash are for me. Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, The Pretenders worthy. Your not worthy. Bill, Ted now Wayne and Garth. Brooks friends in low places. Stay or go Dave or U2. Lost in the supermarket with Sting, Lorde. Veruca Salt, and Blondie I saw The Ramones with Weezer, Greenday and Material issue. Cheap trick watched with the smoking popes, the Verve, as Peter Gabrial, the Who and Oasis meditated to Rage, Wilco, Pearl jam and the kinks. Nice train ride.

Watch the frenetic energy pour out of joe strummers pores as he strikes staccato chords repeatedly behind the lead guitar segments of mick Jones while his young voice staggers lines about the police after common criminals, providing a melody of frustration and yearn for safety prominently above the realm of a thick steady beat banged out on simple drums by topper headon whose Japanese flag bandana holds back the sweat of another night of damaged ear drums underneath blinding lights, while the too handsome Simonin staggers a pulsating rhythm on his fender bass that has seen more than its share of walking, no, running lines from tropical reggae records left to English punks with too much time on their hands, tying together the band into one tight unit of desperation howling for one more gift of danceable harmony before a return to top 40 radio broadcasts beamed into sweltering city high rise apartments in the early days of Reagan's intriguing research on a neutron bomb that can wipe out papa san but leave his moped in good order because it was 1980 and nobody knew how to fucking care anymore so let them bounce and wail until six am when they must retire to the monotony of a 9 to 5 society overran by crooks feeding the youth foreigner and Toto eps in Hopes that they wont read the international section of the Tribune or listen to the God forsaken 12 inch clash singles meant to wake up our souls and alleviate the burden of future elevator music pumped into their iv unless they can tear out that stick and mainline a shot of south American rhythms coming from stacks of Marshall Amps piled high behind the only band that matters, THE CLASH. the future certainly is unwritten.
@decimated550 Жыл бұрын
The great thing about the clash was that Joe Strummer didn't have to shoulder the entire burden of putting personality out there on the stage. Mick Jones had a tremendous amount of verve as well. Topper and Paul were more reserved and Paul was no singer and topper was fine in the background. Clash just wasn't one big personality and like three random guys like a lot of punk bands. The clash had a very good division of labor up front and in support
