What is the clogged artery myth? Watch this short video and find out the shocking truth.

0:00 What is the clogged artery myth?
0:30 What causes clogged arteries
1:11 The purpose of cholesterol
2:35 Why inflammation is the problem-not cholesterol
3:00 Causes of inflammation
3:42 Summary
In this video, we’re going to talk about the clogged artery myth. When it comes to clogged arteries, most people focus on cholesterol. They want to lower their cholesterol by eliminating things like fat, butter, eggs, and animal meat. I want to talk about some additional data that has to do with the chain reaction that occurs before cholesterol enters your arteries.
The first thing that happens is you get this thing called a lesion. This leads to an inflammatory state in the lining of the muscle of the artery. This doesn’t happen in your veins because you don’t have the same muscle tissue. When lesions happen, cholesterol comes by to fix it, acting as a bandaid.
Not all cholesterol is bad. In fact, your body makes a ton of it-more than 3,000 mg a day. Keep in mind that an egg only contains 300 mg of cholesterol. If your body makes so much, why is it considered bad? It’s not. Every cell wall is made from cholesterol. Hormones, specifically sex hormones, are made from cholesterol.
Artery plaque is mostly made of three things:
• Calcium
• Fibrin
• Cholesterol
However, this only happens when there’s damage or inflammation happening in your arteries. The key is to reduce the inflammation, so your arteries do not need “bandaids.”
The biggest causes of inflammation are:
• Stress
• Insulin
• Omega-3 Fatty acid deficiency
• Smoking
• Harsh chemicals
Get rid of inflammation, and the arterial plaque will go down.

I have been fat almost all of my adult life and up until I got in my fifties it never really bothered me but now I wish I could go back and start over because now I have joint pain I get tired in the middle of the day and just over all felt lousy but thankfully I discovered Dr, Berg's video's about a week ago and the changes in just a week are amazing the bloat in my belly has gone down the pain in my knees that made it difficult just to walk has just about gone away. For the last 5 yrs I have tried this diet or that diet but none of them made any sense to me. This mans video's have changed my life he is truly a blessing and I will sing his praises to all my friends and family for as long as I live THANK YOU Dr, Berg

So true. I started Keto, for the inflammation. I was a dancer, so my back, knees etc are screwed. I ate horribly, but I could because I was so active. After starting keto, I noticed a difference in pain in just a few days. A few weeks in? I no longer have pain, and am losing weight as well. Which, I can afford to now. I am not fat, but compared to what I used to be? I am uncomfortable

@John Citizen don’t let surgery scare you, you will feel a lot better a month after your surgery, is not all about diet it’s also supplements, 8 months after surgery I went back to work flying commercial jets for a major airline, now at almost 67 I enjoy life in Colorado and still able to exercise without any limitations. Diet is essential, it seems to me you are following a specific diet , now you have to incorporate supplements, a walking daily program and eliminate sugars and limit carbohydrates ( bread, pasta, rice etc), add walnuts and almonds daily in your diet, and if you like fruit, eat berries ( very low hypoglycemic index), I believe doctor Berg has plenty of additional recommendations in his videos. I wish you best of luck, you will be fine at the end, start doing a little yoga at home it will help your breathing and flexibility as well, I wish you the best.

Hi Dennis. I agree with your comment about Bacteria / Infection causing inflammation. I lived in mouldy property for years which had an unidentified bathroom leak. My blood pressure went up to 250/145 and I was hospitalised as a result. My cholesterol readings were bang on normal as were my fasting glucose tests A year later and I'm on calcium channel blockers with slightly improved BP readings but still high (180+/110+). I moved out of this house into better accomodation a few months ago and 'm now making all the dietary changes (Keto) recommended by Dr Berg so hope to see a further reduction in my Blood Pressure readings in the coming weeks and months. It would have been great for Dr Berg to have covered the bacterial aspect to be able to understand how it can cause inflammation and raise blood pressure - thanks for your post...

So true... when I worked this out a few years ago. So I took this information and gave my son who had crohns, hydrolysed collagen with Wallachs 99 a day and he was symptom free after 3 months. If I took away either then symptoms would slowly come back. So I keep him on both. He now is symptom free and can eat whatever he wants. I keep him away from too much refined sugar, or any gluten though anyway. The doctors could do nothing for him but I figured if his little body is sore from inflammation and fissures inside then collagen is the best natural plaster to heal. My doctor said that I must be a clever mum to find this out because they give hydrolysed collagen to pre-term babies who don't have fully formed intestines. So I asked why not give it to all the crohns and celiac adults and he told me that because a study hasn't been produced they can't tell patients about it. Go figure.

In this video, Dr. Berg says "cholesterol" is the body's first line of defense to heal, "patch," arterial lesions caused by inflammation. Daily drinking a glass of water with a tablespoon apple cider vinegar dissolves excess calcium deposits (as in arterial walls, compounding with cholesterol to form plaque); and taking vitamin K2 (not just "K" a/k/a "K1") directs the body's newly ingested and past misplaced calcium into where calcium belongs, into the bones.

I've been reading so much about this, and this piece fits right in, with other medical facts, but also simply explains something that I know to be true by my own empirical experience. I've been on meat diets, and had low cholesterol, and systolic pressure readings below 115, diastolic readings between 65 and 70. So this makes perfect sense!! For pete's sake, eat salmon, omega 3s, vegetables, don't smoke!!! don't smoke!!! don't smoke!!! no refined sugars!!! cut the breads and the pastas... eat pulses!! stay away from high sodium foods!! (excess sodium inhibits your kidneys from absorbing fluids in your blood stream, raising blood pressure!!) EXERCISE!! EXERCISE!!! EXERCISE!! KEEP YOUR BLOOD FLOWING AND YOUR HEART PUMPING!! Good comment but I would add that too much emphasis is placed on reducing sodium when potassium must be balanced with sodium in the body, so to reduce blood pressure often all that is needed is to increase potassium which many people are deficient in. Dr Berg would say eat lots of greens which is good however cream of tartar is pure potassium powder and good to keep on hand and is a quick fix at half a teaspoon or more per day. 2 teaspoon per day for a week is not too much ch for someone deficient, especially if they have cancer or some other bad illness. Also, it’s worth mentioning that when someone goes on a ketogenic diet they often need to increase salt(pink salt preferably). I did. This is due to carbohydrates causing the body to retain fluid.

Love this information. Honestly was having a pain on my left upper chest. And searched him. I noticed that every time I eat ice cream or fatty food consecutively. I feel this pressure on the left side of may chest with gallbladder discomfort on my right mid abdominal side. But notice when I immediately drink three shots of apple cider vinegar with sprite on diet squirt my pain, boated ness and discomfort goes away. Also when I drink shots of garlic turmeric apple spider and ginger for about a week. The pain and discomfort goes away for about three months.

I personally tested the keto theory by having a full blood panel done prior to the start of an intermittent fasting keto diet. I then requested a new panel every 3 mos for a year and luckily my doctor (and insurance provider) obliged. Basically I dropped all sugars, starchy carbs and trans fat. I ate tons of red meat, including bacon, added butter, olive oil and good fats. I also upped my greens and drank a little bit more water than I typically would. I did not change my exercise habits and remained somewhat sedentary. Within 6 mos I lost almost 60 lbs. My triglycerides went down. My total cholesterol dropped from 235 to 202, but my good cholesterol actually increased by 15 points. My blood pressure also dropped and was in a healthy zone. My doctor was amazed, as was I. Using the old-school train of thought, that 'red meat + good fat" diet should've sent my cholesterol levels into the stratosphere, but instead the opposite happened. Proof, in my mind, that we've been duped into believing the cholesterol hate. After all, you can't have the sugar and flour makers admitting that their food is bad.

My BMI was 30 or even more back then and now it is at a stable 20 for at least a couple years. Not only that but his "get healthy to lose weight" idea was exactly what I wanted! At the time I found him, I was searching the internet over some health issue and weight loss wasn't even a hope since corporate medicine claims that gaining weight is just normal as you age and that it isn't possible or even good to lose it! What a journey it's been! Thank you for all your help, Dr. Berg!

Given that study after study equates high chloesterol with cardiac events, perhaps the Doc should clarify that eating meat lowers chloesterol IF you previously ate a lot of sugar. If on the other hand--study after study--you do not abuse sugar then meat consumption significantly raises chloesterol compared to the no animal foods diet. Disservice imo to fail to explain.

Can air pollution cause inflammation of the arteries? Doctor, my mother is diabetic and lives in a highly polluted environment since 14 years. Since 2010 she is having recurring blockages and has got almost 10 stents since then. I am really worried, should I convince them to relocate to a different city? I also need to know, having 10 stents does it cause a bypass difficult in the future and can my mother start regular exercises like jogging? Having 10 stents in the heart makes her psychologically weak and she does not want to stress out so does not like the idea of jogging.

This is a very interesting video because it makes sense. Inflammation in the arteries, cause by consuming excess junk food, sugar, etc. causes lesions that require cholesterol to repair like a bandage. The more garbage you eat, the more lesions form, the more cholesterol is needed. Eventually, the bandages get too thick and can lead to heart issues. The key is to remove the inflammation so that the bandages (cholesterol) is not needed. My question is what happens to the excess cholesterol when it is not needed?

Cholesterol is used to patch cellular damage. It is part of the fight-or-flight response. If you feel threatened, real ir perceived, your body will increase cholesterol production anticipating the need for repair. But our bodies do not differentiate between real physical threats or just environmental stress. If you feel the need to lower your cholesterol, try living a lifestyle that reduces your stress level. But there is new research that points to higher cholesterol levels have better survival rates when severe infections occur.

"Grains are bad." "No, grains are good!" "Meat is bad." "Screw you, meat is good." "Carbs are bad." "You're crazy carbs are good." Over the years I've become UNBELIEVABLY(!!!) and INCREDIBLY(!!!) exhausted at hearing the banter back and forth between different groups. Sick of it! Here's what I'm going to do: eat mostly plants and, yup, I'm going to eat some healthy carbs and I'll have a little meat - not too much but just for flavouring. Sugar will be a once in a while treat, avoid fast-food, cook at home, exercise and stay active. That's it - end of story! I'm done with this.

Icing, frosting is pure sugar (or now far worse, high fructose corn syrup) and a shortening such as saturated fats like butter (healthful in small doses), lard (pig fat?) or (worst) margarine, an unnaturally hydrogenated vegetable oil. Among the bad effects of sugar is glycation of the body's protein tissues, i.e., attachment to protein molecules in the skin to make it hard, wrinkled and prematurely old. And sugar feeds cancer.

fat is flavour and when you take out fat you need to put something back in, i.e. sugar. The one who is pushing the agenda of demonizing fat is the grain and sugar industry. Tell me, with the exception of fibers, do you think our body require a single gram of carbohydrate from diet? Please answer. There have been 2 meta analysis, one in 2010 and another one in 2014, there is just simply no evidence that there is any link between saturated fat and CVD. What other proof do you need? Even the fundamental science support it.. Tell me, with the exception of fibers, do you think our body require a single gram of carbohydrate? Please answer.

Dr. Eric Berg should have addressed the Omega 6/Omega 3 unbalance. We need both essential fats but in equal amounts. To much Omega 6 causes the inflammation which he describes on behalf of the bodily processes they stimulate. Omega 3 have the opposite effect. The body needs both but in equilibrium. Omega6/Omega3 should ideally have an 1:1 ratio but as Omega 6 is more prevalent 3:1 will work fine. The modern American diet has a ratio of 20:1. Combine that with excessive sugar intake, stressful work/lifestyle and smoking and you have the recipe for disaster.

Also, when high glycemic foods are consumed with slow digesting foods, insulin response is much smaller. People don't just eat pasta or rolls, they eat other things with it. People eat too much and therefore produce too much insulin. It's neither the meat, nor the carbs or sugar ALONE. Skinny people with a sweet tooth don't have clogged arteries unless they are stressed, smoke, drink too much alcohol or do drugs.

Did you know?... your brain contains more cholesterol than any other organ in your body. There must be a good reason for that. Yet many Doctors prescribe Statins in order to 'lower cholesterol' in their patients ... even healthy people! This is a crime against humanity. Statin prescriptions vary significantly in strength and daily doseage - so how can a Doctor judge what is best for the patient? No one can predict how Statins might impact on the long term health of each individual. If you meddle with the Primal Forces of Nature (i.e. prevent your body from functioning as intended) then Nature has a habit of biting back! ... You might recognise these famous words spoken by Mr Jensen in a great scene from the movie Network. "You have meddled with the primal forces of Nature (Mr Beale) ... you will attone"!

When I followed the so called low fat, high fibre diet 1200 calorie diet my triglycerides were high as well as my weight. Mood was low. Seven years of low carb and my triglycerides have been better each year. 60 pounds lighter, without starving all the time and the depression is gone. A friend who was on statins and high blood pressure meds found out she was diabetic last year. Her doctor gave her 2 choices. Follow the Canadian Diabetic food advice and go on higher levels of meds each year or go low sugar and carb. She went low carb. She now weighs 100 pounds less, and the only med left is half the lowest dose pill available for blood pressure. Triglycerides are down. Hoping to drop the last pill soon. When my husband had 3 strokes 8 years ago I put him on the recommended diet. He could not cheat. Every three weeks I took him for blood work and every three weeks it was worse. Then I watched a Gary Taubes lecture, changed his diet and watched the improvement. He went back to work and the old diet and went downhill again. Back on high fat , low carb and doing great.

If you are using good quality fish oil instead of the cheap stuff the burping up of fish taste is because you are not properly digesting your fats. Perhaps you have some liver congestion and need a liver cleanse or flush. Or you could take a lipase capsule with your fish oil. Another option is to take Vectomega from Terry Naturally. It is a phospholipid carrier of omega 3's instead of an oil and will be absorbed better even with bad fat digestion.

I had tremendous results on a plant base diet after my heart attack and the first thing I did was to to get rid of all processed meats and grains. So I started eating only whole foods. Then, I started cutting meat also and my LDL went even lower allowing my cardiologist to cut my statins. So I do believe like Dr Berg that cutting processed foods is the most important step. However, a whole food plant base diet can achieve even better results if you know how to get your B12, omega3, iron. So far this is what I’ve discovered after several blood tests every 6 months measuring all my nutrients. A vegan diet with processed foods will not achieve that though. You need to good whole food first.

"Rid your body of blood clots, arterial plaques, cellular debris, bacteria" Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Show me the evidence from a reputable source explaining to me the process in how this enzyme can do all these modifications on the body - with 0 side effect. If you understand anatomy and physiology, this "magic cure-all" is just that, magic. I see a lot of small reports done by folks with virtually no background, and some with a bit but nothing on a large scale displaying the healing properties. You think of yourself as a smart individual but take a step back, look at what you're doing. You're taking some supplement thats been said "it works" by random folks with no real background, for money - and you're claiming you feel better. You're a "sucker" is what most would say. You do realize a HUGE portion of the population lives to 70 without any big problems?

Dr. Ornish's great study has been shown to be flawed on many accounts. Regardless, what Dr. Berg said, 'Take care of the inflammation and cholesterol won't be a problem' Nobody is saying that a plant based diet is unhealthy for you or will kill you. But neither will a meat based diet or a fat based diet like the ketogenic diet either. There is more than one way our bodies can get healthy. The problem is more that vegans feel they have to demonize meat and therefore any diet that has it in is evil and only their way is right. Science has shown otherwise.

There is now a new (old) look at what the heart attack really is. A relative new look (which is what may have been the original hypothesis) is that the clog arteries 'blood clots' are not the cause but the result of heart attack. The heart attack being caused by poor capillary perfusion of the heart muscle - thus reducing the hearts ability to remove lactic acid when it is working in a low oxygen environment (working harder than oxygen can be supplied so goes to a different mechanism). The body produces a chemical that clears this from muscle, but with poor capillary health in the heat it can lactic acid can build up and kill heart muscle. The down stream result being dead tissue in blood clots. Something like this......

Mary If I may try to help. Things to stop doing. Animal product including dairy, fish, foul and eggs. This will reduce the cholesterol outboard source immediately. Stop all oils. Oils easily penetrate vessel walls and cause massive inflammatory responses. Things to start right away. All kinds of dark green vegetables. Feel free to have potatoes, corn, rice, oats and beans. Fruit in moderation is fine as well. Greens are beneficial if steamed lightly. Several vegetable nutrients are more readily absorbed if broken down a bit through steaming. All high fat food such as nuts. Nuts are nearly all fat and hard on the system. The greens will provide a nitric oxide protect gas which will help keep further damage to a minimum.
