I really like how they made Maul somewhat of an anti hero in this episode. He looks tired and sad and like he just wants to spill the beans all over the place because of how he was betrayed by the only mentor he knew. I was afraid his script for this arc would be Kenobi-obsessed two dimensional villain dialogue but I'm very pleased

The one thing i didn't really like was what Jesse said to maul, what was the point of that? What sid Maul gain from him telling Maul about Ahsoka? That didn't really have an effect on the plot at all.

@Da Ol Telling Maul about Ahsoka helped Maul convince Ahsoka that they need to join forces. He talked about how they were both used for greater powers and such.

I feel like it's the opposite. He's doing the right thing for the wrong reasons. He wanted to stop Anakin and prevent Sidious from rising to power, but he's doing it for power and revenge.

Is that right? Cool! I was actually thinking that Darth Maul was The Phantom Apprentice, since no one knew he was aligned with Darth Sidious...or, that Ahsoka was The Phantom Apprentice, since Maul never knew the Padawan connection between Ahsoka and Anakin Skywalker. Maybe it's a trinity?: Meaning Maul, Anakin, and Ahsoka are ALL Phantom Apprentices (esp. since Ahsoka ends up turning away from both The Jedi and Anakin, ultimately).

Luke Frederiks ehhh...not all of it. It has great arcs and Ashoka fights Vader! Each season got better with them ending it very well. Rebels does a lot to establish the time between clone wars and a new hope, while also setting up plenty of original characters, world building and storytelling. It will also feature heavily into what comes next for Star Wars as a whole. So imo Rebels is a good series and an essential viewing experience for fans.

Maul vs Ahsoka is probably my 2nd favorite duel of the series behind Sidious vs Maul and Savage. So much manipulation and wordplay from Maul, Ahsoka nearly joining him to take down Sidious was very well done.

Though you could make the case he saw Ahsoka as a kindred spirit and was trying to reach her the same way he sought out Ezra in Rebels, this is the same guy who took over a planet so that he could ultimately spite Obi-Wan by killing his lover in front of him. Ahsoka herself pointed out this episode that Maul would probably try to claim the power vacuum for himself should they somehow succeed in taking down Sidious. He always has an ulterior motive in mind.

I think "The Phantom Apprentice" is actually Anakin. This whole episode was foreshadowing how he was groomed by Sidious in order to be his new apprentice.

Duel of the Fates is more of a Theme for Jedi vs Sith dueling. It’s just associated with Maul because they first appeared together. But John Williams created it to show this was a battle between ancient rivals.

I always seen it as the important duel theme. It was played first to see who will train anakin. It was played second when anakin was rushing off to save his mother becuase he is falling deeper into the dark side. It was played 3rd in Yoda vs Palpatine. It was the two grand masters facing off for control over the galaxy.

Help-ish. He wanted to kill Anakin and twart Sidious plan only out of spite, and to seize as much power as he could from the chaos afterwards. Like Ahsoka said, with him to replace Sidious. He played his own agenda here.

@@spicysnowman8886 thats an understatement, Ahsoka would squad wipe Rey, Kylo, Phasma, and Finn in about 2 minutes, give or take, with little effort. Cal Kestis would probably be able to have a decent battle with Rey, which would go his way because at that point he would be older and more experienced than he is in FO. Ezra and Kanan would also wipe Rey out. Rey is only the best of her time because the only other Jedi is a ruined version of Luke who refuses to do much and because Disney says so.

Fun little detail. Right before Ahsoka and Maul start fighting, you can faintly hear Palpatine’s scream as he engaged Mace Windu and company in Revenge of the Sith. Hinting that these fights are taking place simultaneously. And this likely means Ahsoka is sensing Anakin’s fall to the dark side at the end of this episode. We do know the next 2 episodes are post-Siege of Mandalore and Order 66 centric.

@@spicysnowman8886 Well Obi-wan had already hinted at not trusting the chancellor when he talked with Ashoka...so she might have believed Maul. Maul knew she would tell the Jedi about the grand plan and who Sidious was if he told her that early. So I think he wanted the fireworks to go off...66, to get back at the jedi, get back at Obi-wan, and then have Ashoka and himself take down Sidious..he was trying to tie everything up with a nice ribbon..all at once. It kind of backfired.

No. They were using Jedi mind trick. They figured one guy wasn't strong enough to get Bane to talk, so they figured with their combined strength the Jedi Mind Trick could work. Maul was doing the same thing Kylo did.

Something just dawned on me. One of the things that always bothered me in Revenge of the Sith is just how stupid Mace Windu is. Anakin tells him that Palpatine is a Sith Lord and Mace responds with that he still doesn't trust him and for Anakin to stay behind despite Anakin giving him a revelation and showing his loyalty. I wonder if Ahsoka will inform Mace that Maul revealed that Palpatine has been grooming Anaking and this gives Mace his reason for more distrust in Anakin?

Mace is dead at this point I believe, because Grievous and Obi wan were fighting while Maul has Jesse. So, while Maul and Ashoka are fighting it would make sense if Mace was fighting Sidious and the part where Ashoka is looking at the glass is a reference to The senate chamber glass already broken

7:30 According to Filoni in the new Mandalorian gallery show on disney+, duel of the fates is the theme of anakin's fate, as it all depends on if he gets the father figure he needs when he has no one around him, or if he begins his inevitable demise.

I think if they joined forces they would’ve either ran to fight the Emperor immediately causing them to arrive during Yoda vs the Emperor and I doubt the Emperor could win that 3 v 1, (plus maybe some Mandos) or Maul would attempt to train Ahsoka in the dark side we know he wants an apprentice after all.

Earlier in the series there is an episode called children of the force where Mace and Obi-Wan and another Jedi all use the mind probing trick at the same time.

So I also freaked out at the start of that fight. “That stance, that’s ray park. That’s how... I’ve seen him do that at cons. Did he do motion cap? Or did they draw the animation specifically to look like his body shapes within Maul?” The musings went on. Glorious fight. So I think he knows he’s in danger with the clones. I think any force user in the vicinity will be considered to be a threat or Jedi for the order. I think he knows he is in danger, all the dark visions, and it has something to do with the clones, but do you think he has all the pieces yet?

I like how they named this episode and plotted everything to throw people off. Letting the audience to believe the phantom apprentice was referring to either Maul or Ahsoka, but it was actually Anakin when Maul revealed it. This is just super awesome.

Maul didn't seem all that selfish like he normally is in this episode. It genuinely felt like he wanted to help the galaxy, albeit in a way that would still be beneficial for him. I love it! Also, this goes without saying, but Sam Witwer absolutely killed it this episode!

I loved how the events of episode 3 were happening in the background while this was happening! Really cool connection. Also loved that they referenced 2003 Clone Wars Animated series' events too during the siege of Coruscant.

This arc is some of the best Star Wars made...and we are only half way! Clone Wars and Rebels have produced some of the greatest story lines as well as cleaning up the Movie plots along the way. Starting to think the future of Star Wars is as a series, not films...

This was the best light saber fight in the whole of Star Wars. Maul's aggressive, brutal attacks clash with Ahsoka's fluid, elastic, unpredictable style. Both can be easily differentiated by the viewer. And in the end she bests him without her lightsabers. Incredible.

I really enjoy how the writers gain straight from the fact that this is a Prequel. References to Rebels and to the Mandalorian, making these segments even more tragic, thanks we know none of these people will win in the end.
