The reason I am scared of expanding my opening repertoire is that then I won't have a scapegoat

The reason I don't expand my repertoire is because my opponent won't play book by move 2 anyways. We are not the same😂

Awesome lecture! I've been playing the KIA lately and a lot of ideas seem to cross over between the two openings. Loved this one!

After watching this lecture I decided to give it a try and absolutely crushed a 1500 in Rapid, mainly by taking advantage of that D5 square for the knights. Thanks Ben!

I never really bothered looking into this opening because it looks awkward with the e4 pawn blocking the bishops diagonal and the weak f3 square. Surprising how fun and tactical the positions and plans are, will definitely be trying it out.

Very nice. I remember playing the Closed Sicilian in a chess club tournament game. I didn't play g3-Bg2 because my opponent apparently didn't understand the opening. He must have expected d4, and he played it sort of like an Open Sicilian, because that was what he knew. I can't remember the details, except that I castled Q-side, he castled K-side and I got an overwhelming attack and a glorious win.

Hi Ben, as someone who doesn't know anything about chess I've come to have a pedantic go at you in your KZfaq comments. At 26:43 you state: "[..] and the idea is White wants to play Qg4 which leads to checkmate" BUT ACTUALLY the immediate idea is Nh6#, checkmating purely with the two knights. I am shocked and dismayed that you did not cover this in the video.

I like the way Ben handles names whose pronunciation is unclear by just switching between them randomly. Rapport, Rappour, Spassky, Spossky, whatevs. 😁

when you rely on opening prep a lot and can't handle an opponent who plays nonsense you've never seen before in your grandmaster game examples that means you are not a good player. not a better one in any case. then chess is probably not for you. maybe learning opening theory is your thing :p but then why waste time with playing chess?

Too one-sided, was it a request by the sponsor to favor white? Closed Sicilians theoretically favor black.
