If Arsenal under Arteta, can go from 8th, 8th, 5th to 2nd(Almost winning the League), it is not a shock to consider Man United(under ETH) to go from 3rd(without a striker and tons of drama and injuries) to 2nd(no drama, less deadwood and better squad depth in key positions). It will be difficult because of the transition that you mentioned, but it wouldn't be a No Sense situation.

Ten Haag inherited one of if not the worst United squad in it's history. He brought them from 6th to 3rd. The amount of games United played last year and not having a huge drop off with games played and injuries is testament to his work.
