The salesman is the devil, YOU CAN FEEL THE LOOK… at the opening scene.

It's possible. I think it's like a monkey's paw story - the salesman says the table will make his life better - since Jesus didn't want children, the table did what it thought he wanted in a twisted way.
@schwarzesonne4001
@schwarzesonne4001 Ай бұрын
@@Dr0p0fahatbut it didnt make his life better, so your logic makes no sence. Only logical approach would be that "he didnt want that baby (cause he thought it will make his life better)" and "devil" granted him his wish in a "twisted" way that it didnt make his life better? Still makes no sence, I agree; But your logic has even less sence. Cause if you are going to "twist" a wish, first you must grant a wish to twist and he hasn't been granted a wish at all. (According to your argument) So yeah, youre wrong
@Dr0p0fahat
@Dr0p0fahat Ай бұрын
@@schwarzesonne4001 Bro, I never said he was granted a wish (I never used the word "wish" at all). And I didn't say the table succeeded in making his life better, I said it tried to act on his unspoken resentment of the baby - if you missed that he didn't want the baby, you missed a lot. And it does follow the tortured logic of a "monkey's paw" type of twisted "deepest desires fulfilled" story (or "Wishmaster", for a more modern take). The table acted on his deepest unspoken desires with disastrous consequences. It makes a lot of sense in the context of the movie. We can agree to disagree.

Cool review guys. The movie was made near where I live, in just ten days and with a ridiculous budget. I would say its a very dark comedy, with some Coen's influence. And yes, impossible not to think of Ari Aster. Try to check out the movie he co-directed in 2017 with Albert Pintó (Pintó is the one that made Netflix's "Nowhere" recently). Its called "Matar a Dios" ("Killing God").

Lord have mercy. My sister is a new mother and she's going through some serious postpartum OCD with the intrusive thoughts that she's going to hurt the child both accidentally and on purpose. It just hits a little harder seeing this review after having a long talk with her earlier today and over the past few weeks. I'm a father myself so it's crazy to think of on that level as well. I think I'm going to have to skip this one. At least for a while. I watched this immediately after seeing the Beyond the Void review, so I relate to Jason. I even thought it was going to be a paranormal movie with a cursed coffee table lol. But what it is is a great movie placed in reality. I agree with this review by you both so much. Great movie. I can be sensitive to real life crime stories and I can’t watch A Serbian Film (tried to but turned it off), but I did fine with this one and really appreciated every aspect. Like Jason said- perfect film. IMDb has “comedy” and “dark comedy” genre tags. I’d say possibly dark quirkiness with the horrific situation but no way comedy and I never laughed, just had my jaw dropped the whole time.

"Theatre of the Mind" is the best way to describe this one. It's what separates good films from great films and why a film like this is so much more effective than over the top ones like A Serbian Film, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone, it's good but 'too much'. The Coffee Table will surely be an interesting watch for nearly anyone who can handle a pitch black dark comedy film. Loved it.

Since Jesus imagined hearing the sounds from the monitor and seeing and tasting the blood, part of me was hoping that when his brother looked at the baby, it would turn out that the baby was fine, that Jesus had imagined the baby's death (manifestation of his insecurity watching it alone), and that the blood was all his. ***spoilers ahead *** I don’t know if it’s lost in translation, sub or dub, but the movie is pretty funny in several parts. The first 15 minutes (at least after the birthing scene), the film is a comedy. The banter between the couple, between the salesman and the wife, it’s gold. Even after the horrific event, I was still holding my hands to my mouth when the guy visits the neighbors and that whole interaction made me laugh again. It felt like a very very dark comedy and it was a welcome relief at that moment. Still, it was horror after horror with every moment when someone got close to finding out. What a movie! What a ride. Very tragic. After watching it I went into my sleeping son’s room and gave him a kiss while he slept. I love being a father and now I appreciate it a little bit more.

Either you're not use to watching movies with subtitles or you somehow missed it, you say you have no idea how the baby got killed by the coffee table. They made it pretty clear the main character put the baby on top of the coffee table he assuming it's strong enough to hold the baby. If I were him and someone told me the glass is unbreakable I still wouldn't risk putting a baby on top of that. I thought it was really dumb of the main character to do that.
@sinistercinemareviews5420
@sinistercinemareviews5420 Ай бұрын
I got how the baby died, but I don’t understand how it could possibly have been decapitated. It falling through the glass wouldn’t cut its head off. You’d have to bring the baby down with force onto something sharp. Cutting the head off of a human isn’t simple. You ever seen someone in a movie fall through a plate of glass and their head comes off? But he did have the glass propped up so maybe he tripped and brought the baby down on the edge of the propped up glass. That could maybe do it. It has nothing to do with subtitles. It has to do with logic

Expectatons are tricky. I went into Fincher's The Killer without plot spoilers but heard some people didn't like or thought the ending was anticlimactic. I savored every chapter of that film and considered pausing at the last 10 min to watch the whole thing again dreading my good time being ruined. I didn't end up doing that and was pleasantly surprised by the ending. My usual preference is to go into films as blind as possible but had that been the case I might have been let down like those that saw it before me. Having expectations usually works against me but can occasionally have the opposite affect. Thanks for the honest review.

Got the rec from ghost pirate. I agree with all your takes. I just watched it twice in two days. It hit harder the second time because yesterday I was feeling highly desensitized. But still, the final few minutes is so terrifying and that is due to the great job by the actors and the director. I was most impressed by Jesus’ brother, he pulled off that scene so well, all he was trying to do was mitigate a terrible situation and he couldn’t because of the dog and the mom not taking no for an answer. You can really feel the emotions all around the room, and it looks like it would play out that way in reality. It is probably the most harrowing ending I have ever seen, and I have watched thousands of movies, especially horror.

I like to think the writers left it open ended for deep thinkers to theorize. To me the salesman was like the devil in disguise because he was like the snake in the garden of Eve saying nothing but lies to convince Eve to fall for eating the apple only for it to ruin their lives and bring sin into the world. I saw the table as the apple and the main guy's wife as an example of God telling Adam and Eve not to do it. If that man didn't listen to the salesman the tragedy would be avoided. Just like if Eve didn't listen to the snake death would not be a thing.

Softly disturbing? Intensely reserved? It's hard to quantify the tone of this film. Alex spoiled it for me when he said it's something they do in Spanish language films but not here. But it didn't ruin it for me. The way they paint the main character as being such a good guy was done so well. Good good film.

@@sinistercinemareviews5420 Some films like Human Centipede feel like they are made just to offend. It seems like a gimmick and once you know it, there is nothing there. The Coffee Table isn't a gotcha type film but I agree it sure isn't for everyone.

Really enjoyed this film, but I definitely had a different experience. Going way out on a limb here, but I saw this as primarily a black comedy and did laugh out loud at some of the most 'shocking' scenes. The inciting incident with the coffee table definitley felt like a punchline to a joke that had been being setup from the beginning in the furniture store. I don't feel the film took itself too seriously, allowing for this humerous undertone, which I think makes the film more disturbing if reading the film straight. I just happen to like my humour very dark.

I don't want harm to come to anyone in real life; I cry often at true crime stories. But usually with animals, there is something really wrong with killing an animal in a movie. I just feel like it doesn't have to be done. There are movies I feel that way about children or even adults. It's like I will say, why'd you have to kill that man? The film has poor direction, bad camera work, occasionally poor editing, and some awful acting. If you want to watch a film about child loss that handles things maturely, watch Anti-Christ.

Jesus's wife was extremely annoying. Like literally from the beginning she was way too controlling and she was making fun of her husband and said it was karma. But I guess Jesus's wife got karma by losing the baby. It was never Jesus's fault. A guy can buy something he likes. She made this a huge deal which was unnecessary. Tbh I wasn't surprised or got anything from the movie except seeing how Jesus was terrified. Only his grief. Not his wife's.

I was personally bummed this one wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be. It felt like the Simpsons Smoked hams sketch where they pad the time for an hour with them not going into the room. It's really not CRAZY, or super disturbing. The opening is wild, but not by much. Reminds me of people talking about Anthropophagus ending being brutal. Certainly rough for the uninitiated, or those who are parents. I think you nailed it, I thought it was going to be more brutal, but it just felt like a cartoonish drama at parts. What was the deal with the salesman, why was his wife so old and intense, but didn't dare go into the room despite trying for ages to have a baby? So much feels like it's for the sake of padding. I personaly wish they amped up the visual anxiety, and been less "haha u suk as a husband hahahahaha". It felt like a not as good who's afraid of virginia woolfe. I still liked it, but I had a friend from America buy me it on amazon since Canada can't do purchases through American amazon. I guess I was doomed to begin with through those expectations. Just like when I bought the WNUF Halloween special sequel "Out there mixtape" for nearly 50$ on dvd through his site...The movie was just ok, but i'm sure if I saw it on Shudder I would have loved it more.
