Throughout History there have been many brutal execution methods which have been used to take the life of a prisoner. The oubliette was used during the Medieval period and this was a hole in the ground of a dungeon where a prisoner was simply left to rot. But there was one execution method in Mongolia which was similar and it was known as 'The Coffin Of Death,' or box torture.
A prisoner would find themselves locked inside of a small coffin for days, weeks and months and they would receive hardly any food and they could not move. It was horrific and was similar to immurement also and the oubliette. There is an image of one woman in the Mongolian desert being left in one of these wooden boxes and it was brutal.

These minds were quite pragmatic and less sadistic than you would think. The mongols were steppe nomads accustomed to a brutal and harsh life. To conquer and occupy sedentary peoples far more advanced and populous than they were, they heavily relied on terror.

Don't you think there are tortures so brutal that they should be completely out of bounds - never to be inflicted on anyone at all, no matter how bad their crimes? Do you want to sink to the level of those who commit the awful crimes you want to punish in that way? I certainly don't want to live in a society, within a (human) species, that can behave so abominably.

@@michaeledwards1172 it is definitely a moral dilemma I know. When it comes to people that hurt children though I think they’ve lost their humanity privileges. Let’s say one of your children went missing and the main suspect wasn’t telling where they were being held. How far would you want to go to get that information; personally I would want the full torture route until they caved. The problem is police corruption and abuse of power would be a big concern. Also laws are there to protect property and the wealthy, not ordinary people. So it would never happen. I’m all in favour of the death penalty but yes, quick and painless is the humane way. Far too good for some people though but it stops them committing crimes again.

Jeezers. . .what hideous barbarity. You can never over estimate the evil humans can do to other humans. It takes the utmost will of all free people in a country, to avoid barbarism and to live under a good legal system. Relax vigilance and we regress to the default condition, as witnessed here.

It was BEFORE 1920 so it was BEFORE communism really took off, at that time it was still the Chinese Empire (Qing dynasty) and Mongolia has always been a harsh country. The PLA and CCP did NOT exist yet.

Because it literally wasn't. This was in Mongolia which fell under the Soviet territories and not China first and foremost. Secondly, the communists in USSR and China immediately outlawed these barbaric practices as well as things like foot binding and other similar barbaric ,,traditions".

Your garden variety immurement was likely PARADISE compared to imprisonment in these coffins. At least when someone was walled in alive, the space they generally got sealed into was large enough to allow some movement and the full range of body positions.

Can you have "a pair of monocles" a monocle by definition is just one. Either way, being chained to a pair of monocles probably wasn't anywhere near as bad as Being chained to a pair of manacles.

I can't believe that people can be so cruel. Even the worst convicts don't deserve this. The people making such suffering, in the name of their laws, are often worse than the people convicted. I mean that woman to be left in that coffin just for having a suspected affair, not even proven, was waaaaay over the top. The human race can disgust me at times.

god can you imagine being a victim of this shit? people actually suffered these deaths and tortures. what a destiny. our destinies are predetermined and there is nothing we can do to change them. we dont do a single action in our entire lives. every thought and ever action we take is prescripted like a movie that is shot and is in the can...the dialogue and all the scenes are shot. it just plays out on the screen and you can only watch. it is this reason and peoples mistaken belief that they have free will and that they "do" their actions they people so often are frustrated because "things never go my way".... and ihe common refrain that if you want to make god laugh tell him your plans. so thank god this wasn't your destiny.
