I remember reading an anecdote of when they filmed the scene with Albert throwing Nettie out of the house. Danny Glover (Albert) was told to do everything in his power to get Akosua Busia (Nettie) leave, while Akosua was told to do everything in her power to stay. After the first take, Danny was so shook he told the director he wouldn't do another take.

I glad you enjoyed one of my favorite movies. Celie kept saying “Albert” because she didn’t know her own husband’s (Mister) real name until Shug said it. And in the book, Mister & Shug wanted to get married but she got pregnant out of wedlock so her father and his father forbade it. Shug’s dad (the minister) took their kids & disowned her. My sis & I filled in our own blanks & said the girl who sang “God is Tryna Tell You Sumn” was Shug’s daughter. We knew all the songs & still quote this movie regularly. Classic!

It’s wild to see a woman’s limited options in the rural south in the early 1900’s. No right to own property, no rape statutes, no statutory rape statues (Georgia, where the film is set had the age of consent of 14 years old until literally 30 years ago) no protective orders, no domestic violence hotlines, no homeless shelter system… most legal authorities implicitly accepted wife beating as a valid exercise of a husband's authority over his wife until the 1930’s and even after the anti-domestic violence laws were written, arrests remained very very rare. Favorite Steven Spielberg film hands down

Normally not a Whoopi fan at all but I liked her best in this. Eventually Goldberg got her Oscar for Ghost but she should have got it for THIS imo 👍

This is a perfect film in my opinion. From the acting to the music, there isn’t one thing wrong with it. It’s unfortunate that the author didn’t like how it came out. I wonder what her vision was.
