When Shug says "See, Daddy? Sinners have soul, too." it brings me to tears every time. Every. Time. No matter how many times I see the movie. I've got to say, this is one of my favorite movies of all time.

My favorite movie of all time. A masterpiece. Steven Spielberg was asked by the author , Alice Walker, to direct this movie. The entire cast is superb!

Something you might have missed... The girl leading the choir was suga's daughter. The pastors granddaughter , Suga spoke about both of them to celli when she was sick in the bathtub. And yet another fun fact about the girl is Albert's daughter as well. The confrontation with his father. When he said that he was the daddy to all suga's kids. And he was happy sitting on the porch Reuniting In song after all those years. I luv this timeless movie

A little fan theory I’ve had about the choir girl who looked on as Shug reconciled with her father. She looked a little too emotionally happy and I personally think that that was Shug’s daughter, the one that Alberts Father alluded to when they were on the porch. I think Shug lost custody of her to her (Shug’s) father and that’s why she looks so happy. Her mother and her grandfather were finally together again.

Celie told Harpo to beat her because she knew Sophia would not tolerate it and Sophia would beat Harpo's ass like a drum.. I believe, it was a way Celie could get a small revenge back at Harpo.. 🤭😁

the color purple is also a tony award winning broadway musical. the original broadway production ran from 2005-2008 and the revival ran from 2015-2017. this musical will be getting a film adaptation set to be released next year. it will star fantasia, taraji p henson, ciara, H.E.R., colman domingo, tamela mann, louis gossett jr, david alan grier, jon batiste, halle bailey, deon cole, corey hawkins, danielle brooks, and aunjanue ellis.

Mister is a victim, too. Not defending him, but his father is awful, and he's been told he's "less than." Not an excuse, but abuse is a cancer that infect generation after generation. It's why I find Sofia so great: she's not gonna put up with ANY of that nonsense... until they darned near killed her

I read the book before seeing the movie. The book was great and the movie followed it so closely...even down to the "Dear God" dialogue/letters from Celie. The only difference is that the movie only lightly touched upon the relationship between Miss Celie and Shug. Watching your reactions has been touching. You highlighted all of the hotspots in my mind and we shared the same responses of outrage, concern, sadness, and triumph. This movie brings out every emotion for me. It's a masterpiece! Thank you for being genuine and transparent. You are a joy! May God bless and keep you always. P.S. You may want to read the books "The Temple of My Familiar" and "Possessing the Secret of Joy." They tell the stories of Adam, Olivia, and Tashi (Celie's children and daughter-in-law) in Africa.

This movie is IMPOSSIBLE to watch without sobbing, so many times throughout this film. It's just so much. Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey deserved Oscars for their roles in this film. They were amazing.

I found myself laughing right along with you at the lighthearted moments. I wept in pain and was outraged right along with you at EVERY single scene of injustice, viciousness, and hatefulness. Like you I wept with ecstatic joy at the moments of restoration, forgiveness, and especially at the end with the Pastor and his daughter Shug Avery, and most of all with the reunion of Ms. Celie and her sister Nettie and her children!!! I have been watching this movie for over 30 years and there is NEVER a viewing where it doesn't just gut me. I get angry, I laugh, I cry, and at the end I celebrate! But there is never a time when the credits roll that my eyes are dry. I'm always a sobbing mess!!! I HATE racism, sexism, and every kind of abuse, including those depicted in this story. But I LOVE stories of forgiveness, redemption, restoration, and unity. This movie is in my top 5 favorite films of all-time because it is brutally honest. Alice Walker wrote the novel on which this movie was made. I believe she deserved a Pulitzer Prize for the work. I also believe this novel is one of the most important American novels of the 20th century. I think it should be read and taught in highschools and colleges in literature classes, ethics classes, and others. As always your reactions are honest and reflect what a precious soul you are. I laugh when you do partly because I find the same things funny as you, but also because you have a contagious laugh that makes me want to join in with you. I first saw this movie with my mom when I was 12. It was on TV on a Sunday afternoon. It was the first movie that ever made me cry. It will forever be one of my favorites.

I remember when I was young going to the cinema, not to see this film but another I was only 7, and seeing the poster for this film. I loved the colours and I thought the girl looked pretty sitting in purple. Obviously I was very young to even watch the film, but the memory stuck with me till I was older and noticed the image again advertised for being screened on TV. It is one of those films you want to put your hand in and slap a fair few people and pull Celie out. Sad, joyful and vicious. It certainly takes you on a roller coaster. Goldberg, Winfrey, Glover, Avery and Ivey hands down great acting. To give you such a heartwrenching harrowing story they played their roles exceptionally.

First saw this movie with my mother, grandmother, and her friends when it can out when I was 17. A few week later my brother got me the book for Christmas as we both love to read. By the end of Janurary my school went on a field trip with all the 12th grader to see the movie again.

A Steven Spielberg masterpiece. There's nothing Spielberg can't do. When he touches something it turns to gold.

This film came out the year I graduated high school. I missed the theatrical release but had heard all the buzz & critical acclaim surrounding its 11 Oscars nominations the following year. I rented the video (VHS tape, not a DVD - LOL) & after the first watch, it became one of my all time favorites. The acting is incredible, each played their role superbly & so convincingly. I had only seen Whoopi Goldberg one other time & that was her comedy special (film of her Broadway show). It was phenomenal to watch her switch characters in her one woman show, but it was still comedy... To watch her in this film just blew me away. Hell, even Oprah killed it! Of course I had to read the book after seeing the film adaptation. What an epic tale & the ending of this movie always makes me ugly-cry every time I've watched it over the past 36 years, even watching these reaction videos makes me misty eyed. I get to experience seeing it for the first time again through others' eyes & watching them become fans themselves. The movie is an emotional roller coaster journey. It sheds light on a dark part of early American history & how difficult times were back then for women in general. But women in the African-American community had it so much worse, from both white men (systemic racism) & those in their own households (domestic violence against them & their children). It also clearly shows the vicious cycle of abuse. Albert treated Celie & his kids horribly because that is how he was raised & taught to be. Notice how he's always chasing after his own father's approval throughout the film...

One of my favorite movies! I used to watch this with my parents, it taught me alot about being a good man. The end will make the toughest, and strongest man weep! Thanks, you made me smile once again as always! The acting in this movies should have received more awards, because it was so amazing! Thank you K.S.O.! You are the best as always!

Oh my goodness, I thought I had cried my heart out at the "God is trying to tell you something" sequence (my Dad and I weren't getting along then...thank God we patched our differences way before he passed.), but I was a blubbering fool at the end. It still brings tears of joy to my eyes even now. Thank you for doing this movie---one of my favorites!

We can all agree that there are three big tear-jerkers moments in the film: angry tears during Celie and Netti's separation, sad tears with Sofia during the Christmas scene (well, angry too) and happy tears with that ending.

Growing up as a kid in the '80's, The Color Purple was in my family's video tape collection (remember those?), and we watched it all the time! A great adaptation from a great novel! The cast is stacked and the production is on point and the cinematography beautiful. It's such a good story.

I weep and curse through the whole movie every time and just when I feel I’m done, Nettie shows up at the end and I cry like a baby.

I read this book in elementary school b/c it was taped red on the end (about to be banned an taken out of our library). It was incredible and powerful, in the back of the book there were signatures of who read it... i added my name as the 13th w/ an excerpt (you better not tell anyone but God, or ill kill ya). A year later the movie came out and i saw it w/ lot of tears...

OMG. There are certain movie experiences that you never forget. My mother took me to see this. Every person in the audience, except one or two men, were women. I swear when Celie picked up that knife and went for Mister, every woman that audience screamed, "KILL HIM, KILL HIM, KILL HIM." At that moment, I just happened to turn to the back of the theater and I saw those two men sneak out.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Just perfect in every way.

Great review. If I may. I would like to point out something about the Miss Celie and Shug Avery kiss. Shug, was trying to show Celie what it's like to be kissed and touched by someone that loves and cares about her. Celie never had that kind of attention and affection from anyone.

This is one of the best movies of all time and it does take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. My heart ached again watching it with you. So much pain in the beginning, but I'm glad she got her happy ending!

What I did remember the most is my sister wanting me to hang with her. I've watched the video over and over since then and it's such a wonderful movie. You have a new sub. Great reaction.

Now that you've seen this terrific film, you must know find Cynthia Erivo singing I'm Here from the musical version of the show. It's spectacular.

The part that always breaks me is when she is at the table and with a quiet and defiant pride states her children are in Africa and she has a sister who loves her. It hits me hard for reasons that are too personal to explain here. But it always strikes me how that little belief -- an often ridiculous belief, without any evidence, that fantasy, that faith --that someone out there loves you is sometimes enough to pull us through, and bear all the suffering and hardship a cruel world throws upon us. We cannot do it alone, we cannot perservere by sheer force of will and wit alone. We need belief - the belief that we can be loved, and are loved, gives us strength we did not know we had.

I hope for the upcoming musical film version of this wonderful classic film will be great. I never saw the Broadway musical version but I feel that I am going to cry a lot as the original film. The Color Purple 2023 is coming this December

Miss Sophia is Oprah!!!

A really great film. I couldn’t look away for a second of any of it. It captured my everything!! It’s been years since I’ve seen this and now I want to revisit the entire movie.

Yeah the Sophia Christmas car scene is SO painful. I think about it all the time.

In the book it’s pretty clear that Ceelie and Sug had a bit of a romance. They’re a great pair of characters.

The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and did not win any, it and the movie The Turning Point (1977) were both nominated for the most Oscars (11) without winning any. Out Of Africa won best picture that year (1986 Oscars for 1985 films). The Color Purple should have swept the Oscars in my opinion it is another masterwork by Spielberg. The Shawshank Redemption was nominated for 7 Oscars I believe and didn't win any either. Who in hell is doing the voting? The Color Purple is superb.

Firstly, I always love your insightful thoughts and your heart. I know you’ll get a lot out of this, so Looking foreword to it. This movie has been probably my favorite all time movie since I first saw it at about 6-8 years old. True, it’s not a typical “favorite movie “ fir a child that age, it has some pretty heavy themes for a child, so it’s hard to explain. I guess something inside me, even at that tender age, understood and appreciated the themes of kindness, perseverance and ultimate triumph. Maybe I identified with Celie because I was raised (due to my religion) with an emphasis on being meek, selfless, obedient, humble, gentle, to turn the other cheek, all the things Celie was. I understood feeling like a girl with little voice, just “wanting to be loved.” Dunno, but this movie has always been very very special to me. It’s so beautiful. Thanks! Not many reactors have done it!
