Zoolander Movie Description:
Propelled to the top of the fashion world by a photogenic gaze he calls "Blue Steel," dimwitted male model Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) thinks he's got a fourth consecutive win as Male Model of the Year in the bag. But, when his rival, Hansel (Owen Wilson), unexpectedly takes the crown, Derek is crushed. He becomes easy prey for fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell), who signs Derek to star in his "Derelicte" fashion show, then brainwashes him to kill Malaysia's prime minister.
Zoolander is a 2001 American action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller. The film contains elements from a pair of short films directed by Russell Bates and written by Drake Sather and Stiller for the VH1 Fashion Awards television specials in 1996 and 1997. The earlier short films and this film feature a dimwitted, narcissistic male model named Derek Zoolander (Stiller).
In the film, top people in the fashion industry, Jacobim Mugatu (Will Ferrell) and Derek's agent Maury Ballstein (Jerry Stiller), are hired by other executives to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia (Woodrow Asai), who will pass progressive laws that would harm their businesses. Mugatu and Ballstein plan to brainwash Zoolander into killing him. Meanwhile, Zoolander has several personal and career issues, including declining popularity, disappointment in his career choice from his family, and trying to find his true purpose which he suspects is not being a model. Through much research, journalist Matilda Jeffries (Christine Taylor) becomes aware of the planned assassination and informs Derek about it. After Derek reconciles with the competing male model Hansel (Owen Wilson), the three try to stop the Prime Minister's assassination from happening.
The name "Derek Zoolander" was invented by Bates while he was editing the first short film, and was inspired by the names of two male models who both worked for Calvin Klein: the Dutchman Mark Vanderloo and the American Johnny Zander.
A satire on the fashion industry, the film received mixed reviews from critics, was a box office success and has now earned a cult following. A sequel, Zoolander 2, was released in February 2016, to negative reviews. An animated series, Zoolander: Super Model, was released on Netflix UK in August 2016 and on CBS All Access in May 2020.

This is Ben Stiller at the top of his form. Fun Fact: Ben Stiller had several family members in this film: his wife, Christine Taylor (Matilda), his father, Jerry Stiller (Maury Ballstein), his mother Anne Meara (protestor who hits Mugatu with an egg), his sister Amy Stiller (one of Hansel's friends in his loft), and his brother-in-law, Mitch Winston (director of the infomercial).

I feel like we've lost the art of the dumb comedy. Now whenever we do get a comedy its just nothing but being vulgar or sarcastic with every line and trying to shock you. I miss comedies like this. Its just dumb, and silly and never gets old.

I Love Zoolander and Anchorman, but both Sequels were absolutely Cringe and Not Funny. IDK maybe in the age of KZfaq we’ve been spoiled with short form dumb content. I remember “Epic Movie” was considered hilarious in the pre KZfaq days. It hasn’t aged well for the standards of a Theatrical Movie release. But these dumb comedy’s were all we had back then lmao.
@dash4800

@Trashthlete those definitely started it. But they still had some heart and decent storytelling. But then you see the newer comedies like This is the End, Neighbors, Bad Teacher or that Good Boys movie and it's all just mean spirited, vulgar crap designed for shock value. They have nothing to offer outside of that.

Dude RIP Jerry Stiller though. Frank Costanza was the best ever… you should do “There’s Something About Mary” where he plays his actual dad 😂

Everyone knows about “ why male models” but it was also when Derek was giving Matilda, the whole “ people you bloodied along the way” was also him forgetting his lines and you can see her reaction

I remember watching this in the cinemas cracking up all the way like you. Haven’t seen this movie in over 15 years now I’m guessing and cracking up again even though I knew the lines were coming.

"He tried to brainwash Derek to kill the claymation dude" might be the funniest line in the history of movies. Also LSD is freaking awesome, especially in beautiful places. Being a psychedelic drug taking world-traveller is a good start, but being a psychedelic-taking world traveller who isn't an idiot is the epitome of a life well-lived. Mike Tyson figured out the formula. That dude reads Machiavelli, does drugs all day and has the whole world's respect. Show me the way, Mike!

the best part of the ants scene is how apparently derek throwing the model want in the script, he improvised so mugatu and the assistant's reactions were genuine confusion, but the assistant's face when mugatu agrees with derek is hilarious!
