So how much of a defense is "I'm a customer" really?

People should stop using only half the quote. The full quote is: „the customer is always right in matters of taste“. It really clears up 99% of all misunderstandings in regard of customers being right.

I never hear “No account for taste” getting passed around in the insult world anymore.

But they're not. They're attracted constantly to self-made misery by having no idea what they actually like, but the market is controlled by subsidy. Like the very fact that comic book sales price is pretty much nominal, and the production is based on a massive network of distribution funnded with MARKETING expense. Essentially, a comic book is just about worth the paper it's printed on. The arbitration of a comic book purchase price, is how much the provider assumes they deserve your gratitude. An engine doesn't run on empty stomach, waiting for "capitalism" to turn profit and the catch-22 to run its course. FIRST you have to sell the guns to bomb Gaza, then with that profit, you put forward delightful stories about living happily in "Krakoa" and that it's actually kinda cool, to be a bunch privileged kids and it's the "homo inferior" who are wrong. OR, if you can live two decades on Abenomics, you might get a SINGLE competitor for this Superhero monopoly, and get your funding from a different island. Under strict US control and not a single Asian island anywhere ELSE.

If I want to buy Wolverine, then the sales clerk doesn’t get to tell I am wrong and I have to buy Superman. If I buy a comic titled Wolverine with Wolverine on the cover and I open the book and find that it is actually an X-23 book then the producer is wrong.

@@fashionsbyohrbachs What the quote clearly says is that you are never wrong to like or dislike these books and that it’s entirely up to you to buy or not buy them. The sales clerk, producer and creatives on the other side are simply measured by how much they sell. Did their product fail or not is the metric of success, not if they are right or wrong. What the quote doesn’t say though, is that the customer knows anything about the wider business or gets to tell the sales clerk how to do his business. The quote doesn’t mean that a single customer gets to make demands and act like a Karen. Back to your example: you absolutely get to decide if you spend money and they will have to live with that. But it’s their decision and responsibility on what’s in that book and if it sells, it’s all they need.

The type of livestream where the host spends 10 hours commenting a 15 minute vid is called an EFAP (every frame a pause). The term was coined by the chat of KZfaqr Mauler, Rags and friends. You could have spent the rest of your life happily without knowing this little nugget of information, but there you go. Thanks for the vid and have a nice one!

Non confrontational self expression is not instigation. My lcs has a sign in the window that says “everyone is welcome” in rainbow letters. That’s fine. Everyone should be welcome. I go in there almost every week and the only time I’ve seen someone get banned was for stealing. Also, I think Dan Slott is just rationalizing his twitter addiction.

As a consummate consumer, I can say with absolute certainty, though speaking solely for myself, a customer is definitely not always right. Have stacks of poor purchasing decisions to prove it.

My first day at the first Outback Steakhouse in Australia I was told - "the customer isn't always right, to accept their expectation without question is to be their servant. You're a person, a server, but not a servant. The truth is, the customer should always feel that they are right... if you want to make a sale" 'The customer is always right' only comes up when there's a dispute. Most transactions are fine, but if it unravels... if a customer doesn't want what you offer then wish them well and hope they reconsider or take on their feedback, if not you may lose future sales. And as a customer, having money doesn't give you the right to have your expectations met, it only gives you the power to purchase what's on offer and vote with your wallet. Last one, if someone argues or fights... an argument is a breakdown of communication... there's no transaction to be had. So wrap it up before the next customer approaches

The original quote is "The customer is always right in matters of taste." If the customer comes in wanting to buy Squirrel Girl, it's not your place to tell them the book sucks and they should read Walking Dead instead.

You're free to criticize anything, comic, movie, etc. If you tag a creator in a tweet or comment in their posts, it's fair game for them to clap back at you.

Fair game, but poor form. Unless the criticism is baseless bigotry, like the antisemitism of “Eric Jew-lie”. Even then, it’s a matter of personal discretion. Personally, I wouldn’t reply to it, but I could understand someone doing so.

@@ascorvinusI once asked someone why they felt the need to respond to past rumors, they said it’s because the new people who show up not knowing what happened and is now seeing these rumors so they will now not support their work. I don’t know if that’s a valid reason for responding but they genuinely believed that they were defending their business by responding.

The actual question itself when done respectfully is how things are supposed to work. You should be able to offer your critique or criticism to a publication you are following and have been a fan of. But how big of a fan is somone when they use terms like "eric jew lie". That seems inherently bad faith. Posioning the well to start with.

A comic sale is a business transaction. The buyer has the right to choose what they will and won’t buy and to be dissatisfied if their reasonable expectations haven’t been met. Likewise, the seller has the right to determine whether what a prospective buyer wants from them is feasible or desirable for them to provide. So long as everyone involved is honest and businesslike, there’s no call for hostility. When deception or personal attacks are involved, however, then a line is crossed.

I feel like at 3:55, that is not criticism, but just trolling?? Sounds like it would've been best for Eric July just to ignore Twitter... unless he has proof and numbers that it creates sales/any press is good press. Comic writers seem to be delusional. They've convinced themselves they're writing for... kids? Young adults? At best, they're comics are read by millennials who pirate their comics while the people who are buying physical copies are older fans who just buy for the cover art. DeConnick basically said what Perch said but in less words. However, I think buying a book just to roast it/criticize it/make fun of it would be one reason why someone would purposely buy a book they dislike. I mean, any given comic book exists. Writers know by now that what they write could be loved, hated, or made fun of. I feel like writers shouldn't be "surprised" if people roast their book. A comic could have the dumbest plot, the most phoned-in, sloppy art, and what, you expect people to praise your comic? Comic book writers are depending on newcomers who have little to no experience reading good, quality comics. They hope their readers have zero experience with Marvel and DC, so when they pick up a comic where the character is written out of the character, they'll have no idea the character is written poorly. Moreover, they want simpleton readers who are okay with dull plots, no action, no stakes, and silly drama.

attacking fans is wrong and awfully dumb. attacking the creator is wrong and silly. giving critiques or just not liking things fine. making jokes about the product is also fine, see angry video game nerd. you can also enjoy things without agreeing with the creators personal views on life, I still like harry potter, but think the author is nutty.

Would you rather be rich or famous? People dominating comics right now seem to be opting for "famous." It's the worst combination of anti-capitalism (financial success is bad), tall poppy syndrome (any success is bad) and dopamine addiction (my worth is measured in how popular I am, including Twitter up votes).

I find it funny people mix everything. An artist/writer can put out amazing product, and be a complete asshole irl. And vice versa. I will still like a product that's good and will not like one that is bad (for my taste).

I insult ideas not people. I think for the most part you can see the intent of these insults and you can respond accordingly. I think you can respond to customer criticisms whether sincere or fake in a neutral manner. I think customers can respond to creator insults by either ignoring or withdrawing monetary support.

As long as you stay within the bounds of the law, you can be as big of a jerk as you want to whoever want, and other people can be a jerk to you. You can say people ought not be jerks in certain situations, but unless you have a way to enforce it, it's a silly discussion. Now everyone go outside.
