The Communities Becoming Energy Sovereign

On our quest for energy sovereignty we've met many likeminded people. Hikurangi Enterprises Ltd (HEL) is a Māori-owned charitable company and our demonstration partner for the A35 Engine. HEL supports community-led economic development in the Greater Waiapu Valley in Te Tai Rāwhiti (The East Coast Region) of New Zealand. Many of these communities are directly exposed to severe weather events yet rely on fragile roading and grid infrastructure for their basic fuel and electricity needs.
When Cyclones’ Gabriel and Hale struck the region in 2023, road closures and power outages lasted several weeks. As a consequence, communities had limited access to electricity, diesel and a robust supply of food and other necessities. HEL is actively developing housing and industry solutions that embed resilience into their communities. They see Mackwell as potentially revolutionary technology which can enable communities to build energy sovereignty.
HEL and Mackwell have a shared intention to:
1. Demonstrate advanced steam technology within the Greater Waiapu Valley.
2. Develop biomass-based circular economic systems for Waiapu Valley communities.
3. Gather data to measure the efficacy of advanced steam technology interventions.
4. Share learnings, outcomes and technology with other communities.
HEL supports innovation that aligns with their core values and enhances community-led development in the Greater Waiapu Valley. Mackwell will benefit from the opportunity to demonstrate the efficacy of its technology with a nationally recognised and trusted partner. Furthermore, the small communities of the Greater Waiapu Valley facing the energy and climate crisis head-on will benefit from accessing viable and resilient technological innovation for a future without fossil fuels. As such, we see our future collaboration as a positive, proactive and natural progression for the journey of both organisations.
Special thanks to Alison Newell, Peter Nutall, Rick & Liz Thorpe for leading the way and establishing our connection to the Hikurangi Enterprises Team.
Further thanks to EJ Ehau and the wider Hikurangi Enterpises Kaimahi, Fiona Apanui-Kupenga, the 47 Moana Rd Whānau, Wainui Beach Community and the people of Te Tai Rāwhiti.

Yes!!! I want one of these now! Especially one with a generator attachment would be perfect with how often power and heat goes out here in Ohio!

I'm always really excited to hear updates from you guys. Keep up the good work everyone, I really cannot wait to see your engines in operation in the field. :3

Those traction engines are amazing, will you sell generators with them? So a traction engine can do work but also power things, I think it would be great if there were more machines that could run off of a flywheel.

Just discovered you guys, and Im so excited to see where you go. All of everything you’re doing looks so promising, taking the old and improving to better help out future, it’s astonishing and unreal. This may be biased, since its coming from a train nerds nostalgic perspective lol, but I think there is some real promise and good reason to have faith in you all. Long live the iron horse!

I can't help but notice that everyone is very careful to say "piece of technology" or "unit". Never once does anyone use the words "steam engine". A part of me is facetiously amused by this attempt at PR spin to avoid the idea that Mackwell is pursuing a technology that most uneducated laymen think is long dead and buried but which in fact is very much alive and well. On the other hand, I'm also a bit disappointed that there isn't more attempt at pushback against this misconception that "steam is dead technology", that it is still alive and well and ready to continue being developed into the 21st Century.

I got my engine from Ross Bendixon. 2kw power plant. Small. But it’s just for my house.

@@concernedaussie1330 no. It’s old school. Single piston double acting. An antiquated design for sure. Nothing compared to modern designs. You can go to Ross for current pricing. It is built to last. I am looking at adding a Stefan motors sterling engine to the mix. I live where it is below zero for month of the year. So steam is a commitment to run on a cold day. Firing an engine is much more involved than building a fire. Especially with a traditional boiler. It’s all good fun, but not for the faint of heart .

this is great, high efficiency biomass generators are very versatile. assuming solar and wind is being used where possible, this provides a much easier to fuel backup system than coal, diesel or gas. its also very nice to see cultural sensitivity and integration instead of working with the imposed structures of colonial descent. not everyone can do that, so i am glad you have taken the opportunity. long live steam engines, and long live Aotearoa ^-^

How much more efficient are modern steam engines compared to one that was the same size or power back in the 1920s?

Peek steam development efficiency was 6% modern Diesel engines are 30%-40%

DLM claim about 12% for the steam locomotives built in 1991. These run on light oil. What surprised the owners was that they were using less fuel than their diesels for the same work. The savings were due to reduced standby, braking and transmission losses.

I presume the 6% was for coal then, not too sure it was only a quick google.

@@adamwachs6392 6 to 8% efficiency. It can be improved in various ways though. 12% is about as good as steam gets.

Are the fireboxes on these engines biochar makers? I understand the emissions from biochar kilns are much lower than emissions from steam engine fireboxes.

How would you feel about having a horse carriage shop being a united States supplier of your traction engines to the Amish/Mennonite Comunity I am currently working on starting a sawmill and a horse equipment shop next Thursday after my family's horse show I'm volunteering at the doughty Valley steam days on Roman miller's circlemill to learn how to use them in conjunction with steam and I'm partnering with an Amish carriage upholsterer who's father was a true master of carriage work I bought his buggy extruded rubber tire machine at the auction his family held to break up the shop after he passed which was in his will

If this engine is meant to help out in disaster areas. Say in a cold place with ice storms and blizzards knocking out power. Is there a cold start protocol for this engine? If it were stored in an unheated building (barn) then it would be tricky to get it up and running. Steam engines and boilers are tricky to bring up from a freezing state. I struggle with this on my own setup. Just a thought.
