It's been a little while how are things common along?

Watched a couple of videos now. Nothing says the biomass fed into the machine is pyrolised, which would create charcoal, so I'm guessing what comes out the smoke stack is pretty dirty. Hope to be proven wrong.

Are the fireboxes on these engines biochar makers? I understand the emissions from biochar kilns are much lower than emissions from steam engine fireboxes.

Can we put one into a ship? Maybe 300hp on a coastal freighter. We want to work in the Islands helping remote communities but diesel is increasingly troublesome. Lots of biomass though. Husks and wood etc. Possibly the agloco that can be removed from the ship hold to assist on land and recover biomass. Then replace to provide propulsion. Love your passion. We need a solution. I think the number one issue to solve with steam is how to make it easier to repair and maintain locomotives. If it would be easier to just swap parts like on a diesel locomotives I think they would be more attractive and competative. I've heard from a guy who has worked with both diesel and steam locomotives and he said that in a diesel workshop you swap parts, in a steam workshop you make parts.

is the a.g loco free from cylinder condensation? i drove a lot of steam locos in my early years and they needed constant use of the cylinder drains to spill out all the condensed water;some engines with certain types of valve gears had ther cylinder heads blown off due to the water accumulation in the system. does that also happen with the mackwell locomotives?

This is a brilliant idea, only thing I'd say though is make it an 0-6-0+0-6-0 for more adhesion

Maybe the circulating pump could be just a lenght of pipe through the hottest combustion gasses with a couple of clack-valves, functioning along the lines of a coffee-maker or a pop-pop boat.

You cant do much with steam unless you Supper Heat it lol
@josephlannert9696 ай бұрын
Yes!!! I want one of these now! Especially one with a generator attachment would be perfect with how often power and heat goes out here in Ohio!

I've been saying it for years, steam has HUGE amounts of instant torque AND because of this has zero need for a complex transmission just like EVs, but on top of that doesn't rely on costly and damaging lithium mining and refining. If you can make the boiler compact enough to have good all around visibility without sacrificing efficiency, safety or simplicity you're golden! Best of luck guys!

Look up turbo burn barrels and try to add a turbo to burn hotter and more efficient.

Now all you have to do is grow huge stands of timber; fell and haul away the trees; and process the firewood. All of that takes diesel-powered trucks and equipment. Then you let the wood dry out for a year, move it from the wood lot into the stack; move it from the stack to the tractor; and shovel out the ashes after every use. Now you've spent time for farming on making firewood. On top of that you need hundreds of gallons of water for the boiler while a farm already needs enough water to begin with. Yep. Sounds efficient to me. Sounds like there's a reason we switched from wood and coal-fired steam engines to diesels.

If the price is right, would it be possible to convert and upgrade old steam locomotives into more advanced versions of their bases, or maybe build upgraded versions of ones that went extinct?

hey mr Sam,how are ya? sorry to bother you again. i have recently checked the Mackwell website,and i really liked the boiler desgin that you are making for the AGloco. would you mind if ask some questions about it? 1.what are the chemicals you use for the Porta water treatment? 2.what is the ideal ph for the water treatment? 3.what are does noodle shaped pipes in the boiler that connect the superheater,evaporator,steam separator etc? are they responsible for purifying the steam? or are they there to make the boiler smokeless? 4.what materials are the water boiler tubes made of? 5.do the tubes need replacing/re-tubing?

Have you guys considered introducing some mechatronic concepts? A simple alternater paired with a car battery and some electronic components would allow digital monitoring and automation of the egines control, increasing safety and decreasing necessary operater skill, additionally the controlls could ve intergrated with other modern technology such as wifi allowing smart connectivity and remote operation

This is a great initiative! This steam engine is far more eco friendly than an electric car when you take production and losses along the whole line of energy production in perspective. It uses 3 materials abundant almost everywhere, steel, to build the machine, water and biomass to produce steam. Needs no rare earth or other valuable and difficult to mine and proces materials, neither fossil fuels and keeps on working even after an EMP wiped out all electronics on this planet. I hope they succeed an prove the world that steam for traction isn't an obsolete way of getting things moving. But as a side note, this will not replace all transport needs as we simply can't grow enough biomass to keep all going, but this will add greatly into the field of renewable energy.

Interesting project but I can't help but question the completely dry sided firebox? Wouldnt The heat losses and lack of heating surface would be far less efficient than a traditional wet sided firebox?
