Another thing to note about repeatable vs burst draw, if you have a card that draws you one extra card per turn, people don't always care or notice. If you draw 7 cards in one turn, it shifts the attention to you and paints a target on your back for the other players
@TheMystcast

Which is weird in the game. Sometimes I don't even draw good stuff. Also people take notice of Rhystic study because they are constantly reminded about it. If you are drawing off of restricted things like Beast Whisperer, Neyith, Underworld Connections. Then it's much harder to care about it. They take away or require a thing to do to get that card draw

I think this should've just been a video on card advantage, not card draw. Card draw is....drawing cards. Playing cards from your library isn't card draw. It's card advantage. Brainstorm and faithless looting is card draw, but doesn't provide card advantage ,by itself. Can trips are card draw that don't inherently give you card advantage, but with synergy, such as using a can trip creature for value later, can become card advantage. Tutors are card selection, some are can trips, some are card disadvantage, some advantage, none are card draw. Every deck doesn't need card draw at all. Every deck needs card advantage. Most draw cards to gain this advantage. Some play cards from the top of their library or their opponents library. Some (white) don't get any for some reason.
@Narabedla4
@Narabedla4 3 жыл бұрын
highly agree with this assessment, as a lot of the problems expressing their thoughts came from not calling "drawing cards" card draw, because they often equated card advantage to card draw
@Orkimtor
@Orkimtor 3 жыл бұрын
I think one of the problems here is that there is this category called "card draw" that many commander players refer to. It probably should be renamed to card advantage or something, but since the category is called like that I think they use it that way in the episode as well.
@gothic22d
@gothic22d 3 жыл бұрын
They are referring to card draw in the deck building rubric of 10 ramp and 10 card draw spells. Many of the cards you use to meet this condition when deck building are actually card advantage cards.
@GuileMcFernis
@GuileMcFernis 3 жыл бұрын
But the problem is their terminology. They seem to be stubbornly holding to the term "Card Draw" as though it is some sacred phrase or money-making trade mark. Proper terminology: Gainful Card Draw, Net Card Draw, Positive Card Draw... I concur, anything that puts stuff from your library onto the battlefield is NOT draw. It is not a card in your hand, it is not an "option" you are holding. You simply cheated mana cost. During Ice Age block, we would put Cantrips in a 48 to 52 card deck that just needed filler, because they are CARD DRAW. They exist simply to get me through my deck, to DRAW MORE CARDS, than I would have with my single turn draw. Additionally, any Cantrip has an effect, then draw a card. That is card gain. Without the Cantrip, I would be down a card if I didn't have the free draw.
@classymofo1059
@classymofo1059 3 жыл бұрын
@@GuileMcFernis I think card draw is as simple as "Does Thought Reflection draw me more cards with it?" If the answer is yes it is card draw. If no then it isn't. Easy.

Regarding the definition, I think it's quite simple: "card draw" is when the card says "draw a card" or "draw X cards". What we look for when building a deck is sources of card advantage, not necessarily card draw. By sources of card advantage I mean spells that potentially leave you up one card or more after they're cast. It may be immediately after they're cast, like divination, or it may be later, like guardian project for example.

I think this video is brilliant, very thought provoking, I would argue then based on your points that any ramp spell that grabs more than 1 land is card draw. But also cards Into play from your library are card advantage not draw, it removes a lot of planning or the ability to use a spell as an answer. You play Rashmi and the card you reveal is an abzan charm. You can either draw the card or kill a creature now, or put into your hand but it becomes known information by the table altering the flow of the game.

I think the simplest way to talk about this topic is to break the category into 2 sub catagories: Cards that mainly aim to increase my total cards / card resources. Cards that mainly aim to increase card quality. Tutors and cantrips fit into group 2. Treasure cruise and future sight fit into group 1. I find this cuts down to the actual point of the topic, and makes evaluating a card a little easier.

In past episodes you had a clear and accurate distinction between card draw and card advantage. In this episode however, you seem to have mixed both, separated in a different way and then let it mix again in some parts creating inconsistencies. The problem with that is card draw is something that exists in the game. It is a term written in the cards and a game action that is often mechanically explored. Explaining the accurate distinction and teaching players how to handle them is the better route.

Out of all the decks I have, I truly count it as card draw if it hits three criteria 1) it generates +2 card advantage over the course of the game 2) Is a maximum 2 mana per card 3) Can get, but not restricted to, lands Other Thoughts The Scry/Surveil 2 = draw 1 maxim applies. Ex. Notion Rain; Read the Bones Permanents with "draw 1 when" effects are judged off 1 turn cycle of survival. If the ceiling is worth the floor, then it counts. Ex. Phyrexian Arena barely passes (usually a low priority target) Synergy/Reusability is taken into account: Goblin Welder + Ichor Wellspring; Kess, Dissident Mage + Abzan Charm [5-color spell-slinger deck] Cycling/Rummaging/Looting/Cantrips could be card draw if the deck can capitalize on the synergy. Anything that cheats mana cost is its own category, as it's usually both ramp and draw. Ex. Sunbird's Invocation

I feel like we should use a different term from now on like “Card Velocity” when talking about the Divination example where the thoughts of card advantage and card draw are combined. Because card draw should mean literally just that, whether it’s from looting, cycling, etc. to make things simplistic to new players. If a card went from your library into your hand, you Drew that card. Simultaneously I think new players should learn right away that card advantage is a lot broader than increasing your hand size and applied to removal, opponents hand size etc. and that in commander have big 3 opponents impacts that more.

I think you might be on to something. Maybe, “card tempo” would be a bit more familiar of a term for people to grasp
@Meldon44
@Meldon44 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, but even with that clarification we have to be careful. Many effects instruct you to "put" a card or cards from your library into your hand, which to a new player seems synonymous with card draw, but since it didn't use the term "draw", it's categorically not card draw, and potentially not even card advantage. Often it's just card selection.
@poofypeanut0221

Well I guess to put it in even SIMPLER terms if the card says literally “draw a card, or X amount of cards” that’s card draw. Again though, I think we should familiarize a middle ground term for the meanings of card draw and card advantage together (which is usually what’s reference when referring to your “10 card draw spells” when starting a new beck build as your foundation)

I think Hermit Druid definitely counts as card draw. It helps you find a basic land with each activation and the milled cards are a huge bonus if you can utilize them. Hermit Druid always puts in work in my Muldrotha deck.

Possibly one of my favorite cards in the game, because I'm a massive Timmy, is primal surge. I once built a 60 card deck where primal surge was the only non permanent in the deck, and so I could basically just put as much of my deck into play as I want.

I do put tutors into card draw and most of my graveyard recursion too because card draw is all about having what you need when you need it. For instance, the number of cards in your hand doesn't normally matter (unless you run Psycosis Crawler), but having a lot of cards in hand tends to increase the possibility that you have the right card at the right time. Sometimes you need an answer, sometimes you need a threat. A tutor guarantees that you have the right card at the right time without having to go through 45 other cards to get to that point.

Two of my favourite card draw spells hands down are Escape to the Wilds and Allure of the Unkown. Escape is just such a feel good card for me, because it mitigates flooding to a certain extent and I love to play Allure in my tribal decks and use it politically. My tribal cards don't do much damage on my opponent's side of the board but can be devastating on mine.

One thing about Sunforger being available for a card draw spell is that I use it in my Akiri, Line Slinger deck, which then can tutor up Vanish into Memory. It blinks a creature until my next upkeep, so I'll usually target Akiri who has a ton of power (and maybe do this at a board wipe moment, or on my opponent's end step). What's interesting is when Akiri returns, I only have to discard 3. So Vanish into Memory is sorta like a 4 mana greater good, but without having to re-cast my commander, and can be tutored up by Sunforger since it's white. So while sunforger isn't typically a card draw spell, it's still card advantage for a repeatable tutor, and there are actually some really decent burst draw spells you can hit in White and Red.

This is a bit unrelated to Commander, but with regard to the several variants of “impulsive” card draw: Rahilda, Wanted Cutthroat from MtG Arena is probably one of my favorites (at least to play). When she does damage to an opponent, she exiles a card at random from their library (or is it a spell at random? I confess I don’t remember), and that card’s playable on any turn after you attack with a wolf or werewolf even after Rahilda dies. (I would think if she got exiled they would no longer be playable, but I’m not completely certain on that.) You can have multiple cards exiled and playable this way as well. She may not be strictly competitive, and a lot of the time you whiff and find something like a counterspell (but on the bright side, that’s one less counterspell you have to worry about, and you know your opponent may be running more), but I kind of like the conditionally enduring approach to impulsive “draw” (or theft in her case).

I think there's a big difference between card draw and card advantage. I feel graveyard recursion is potentially card advantage depending on the current in-game situation, but it's not card draw. It might be just as good if you have an answer or wincon in your graveyard, but if you don't, card draw is definitely better. I would personally consider tutors and looting card advantage. Obviously they are not giving you an number advantage, but hopefully a quality advantage in your possible answer / wincon.

Pursuit of Knowledge is a whacky white card that lets you skip three draws, then you can remove some cards and draw 7! I guess the trick would be to either be in wX and trigger your own draws, or rely on others(howling mine, temple bell etc) then boost ahead. Even more so if you have Alhammaret's Archive.

I think "Advantageous Card Draw" would be a better term for effects that leave you with more cards in your hand. Because even though a cantrip doesn't give you card advantage, it still definitely takes the top card of your deck and puts it into your hand.

Personally I think card draw synergy is the best type. For instance, I run a +1/+1 counter/proliferate deck with Atraxa. For a while the deck suffered because I was just not drawing enough cards despite all the mana I was capable of generating. So I added in cards like “Bred for the Hunt” and “Fathom Mage” suddenly I’m drawing tons more than I otherwise would have. Even with burst card draw. So I that’s my take on the best kind of card draw.

My favorite repeatable card draw is Graveborn Muse. Its basicly phyrexian arena for one more on a 3/3 body, but instead of only 1 card every upkeep, its 1 card for each zombie you control and then you loose that much life. On its own its good like phyrexian arena because its a zombie itself, but with other zombies its just amazing, and you don't even need to be in zombie tribal. Many good zombies just are in your deck, like gray merchant, Mikaeus, Nekusar or something that makes zombie tokens like grave titan and scarab god. And if you are in zombie tribal, it is just unbeatable card advantage engine that needs to be dealt with, and you are in black so you have a lot of ways to bring it back. Overall, great card

I definitely agree that tutors are usually not card draw but honestly I have no need for additional card draw if I have my winning combo as well as a protective spell and the Mana to play it. Which usually isn't much Mana at all depending on the combo. I would argue that search is much more useful but then again you do need to draw it or have it in your opening hand. I run Rakdos colors so I have access to the best search spells in the game.

END STEP: Josh, I think it is perfectly valid to redo a day that you were on vacation. I would totally pick a vacation day because no one is expecting me to be anywhere or do anything in particular. It doesn't have to get old cuz you're not tied to that place - you could always fly somewhere else and experience something new until time ran out and you reset the day. However, in this instance, I'm not sure if you should pick Hawaii as your starting place in terms of how easy it is to travel to or from - referring to distance to other places you might like to visit.

Regarding the discussion about wich is more important, Card Draw or Ramp, I belive that both of you forget to take in consideration the Commander currently used: while for the mayority of the commanders would be better to have more raw card draw, others gain much more with the ramp, especially those with an activated ability to "draw", like Tasigur or Thrasios. Other than that, an excellent show, guys!!!!

Yeah, I agree. Same with surveil, using your graveyard can be advantageous because you can take from your yard. I play tasigur and I use my yard as an extension of my hand. Just putting a part of your deck face up and being able to pick from those to play... Unless someone exiles it, then I'm just sad lol. I learned in innistrad by playing zombies that the graveyard isn't a bad place for your cards to go. I look at looting as advantageous compared to most decks that might lose those cards permanently. imo surveil, looting and graveyard play is advantage depending on what deck you play.

One of my more controversial opinions that I picked up recently from somewhere is that the Ravnica bounce lands draw you a land (since they are a tap land that keeps you on curve while returning a land to your hand). While I’d never include them in the 10 card draw category, I like including them since it’s not very hard to fit one in to an early turn to get a land back for later.

I like card draw in the sense of giving me more options and answers in my hand. I can play them whenever I want. I know red has impulse draw, but honestly I kind of stay clear of it. Effects like Etali, I don’t consider card draw because they aren’t going into my hand and I don’t get to chose when to use it. Sometimes it’s something I need for later, and woops I guess it has to be casted now. Not beneficial. Then you have things like wildest dreams or deaths denial and I definitely wouldn’t could as card draw, but instead recursion. I always have a “protection/recursion” pile. What if this piece of my combo gets blown up? Or what if they go after this or that cause it does fancy stuff. I can see those 2 maybe being “card draw” if it’s the right deck. Graveyard decks or something like that. But generally, I would say no.
