Been doing finish carpentry for 35 years and stairs for about 25 years. I appreciate some of your suggestions. Always nice to see how others do things. I like your use of hot glue gun, going to have to start incorporating that in my work flow. The biggest thing I could suggest in return is to save your carpenters pencil for rough construction and go buy a 9mm mechanical pencil (a thinner lead would be even better, but will break more easily when dropped, which will ultimately happen if your like me). Also get a spearheaded marking knife. Use it along with the Collin's stair jig. Your precision will increase dramatically. A slight back bevel cut along the ends of the tread from the back of the tread to about an 1" away from the nosing. then cut the rest square or .5% on the end that lays down last. Its an extra step at the saw, but worth it.

Thank you for taking the time to craft out such a detailed comment. I like all your suggestions and will put them into practise. I've got a marking knife in my shop and will start bringing it along to the job site. The pencil is also a great suggestion and I'll pick one up. I also like the double bevel idea as it won't be visible from the front view. Thanks, Scott

I also watched your video on pricing out stairs and agree 100% with everything you said. Your method and labor estimates are pretty much the same for how I do it. People always under estimate what's involved in stairs. @@scottearlsmithFTC

@@t.e.1189 That's for sure. I'm thinking about doing a video on "vetting customers." Basically a few of my thoughts on how to choose the right customer. Because if you make a bad choice it can really be destructive. What do you think? (I know that there are data bases for bad contractors but none on bad customers...) Cheers, Scott

I think that would make a good video. For the most part I been pretty fortunate. But I knew guys who seem to have had more than their share of bad customers. Makes me wonder if they don't really know how to pick them or if it's because they don't really know how to get along with people. Not to mention make any money. @@scottearlsmithFTC

Nice video. Subscribed. No one has complained about the 3/4" discrepancy in the first and last step with this method?

Thank you for the compliment and the sub. Every time I have done the stair treads like this the customer has added hardwood flooring to the top and bottom of the stair case so it actually evened things out and made it consistent with the others. So no complaints. If I am making new stairs (as in my video on "New way to build stairs") then I make the top and bottom riser different so the finished stair case has equal rise throughout. Instead of cutting off old treads why not just fill with 3/4 plywood and cut less off new tread?

Thank you for your question Bryant. If you look at the footage of this video between 23:17-23:30 you'll see the stair case where I added skirt boards. This is a situation where I simply added a piece of 3/4 OSB to build out the riser flush with the existing nosing. In this case the nosing was square and the overhang was consistently 3/4". But you'll see that by time I added the oak tread, the nosing of those treads really crowded the forward edge of the stringer. So with a standard 1" or 1.25" nosing overhang it simply isn't practical to build it out as you'll likely have your new treads proud of the top edge of the stringer. So cutting off the nosing is almost always the way I tackle this issue. Cheers, Scott
