They did, but we can hardly consider them canon. Altough they were only distributed in Japan, there is one manga that even explains the events of SVC Chaos.

There are still a couple. Thorgi Arcade made a full series retrospective, he talks about the lore in it, but also about all aspects involving the games, from behind the scene production to gameplay and reception. Roflemonger made one focused on the lore. There are others in spanish and portuguese as well, if you speak any of these languages. But I think this is the best one about the lore, so far. Very well done.

Orochi Saga: Great plot, great back stories of the characters, overall a great beginning and a great saga! NESTS saga: Too many information, messy plot, unfinished stories although I can see it being very interesting if it was done in a more creative way. Ash saga: Too little information, the opposite of NESTS. This saga had huge potential, we could have seen those from the past closer, their personality, their gameplay, their back story but unfortunately most of it was kept only in cutscenes. Overall a very simple saga. New Beginning saga: Seems very promising so far. It mostly focuses the excitement on previous deceased characters that return to life. I still feel the lack of plot and the sense of a simple story without many major twists, yet we have more to see until the saga concludes!

As much as I like the story of The King of Fighters I think SNK wasted a lot of opportunities in terms of the story. For example, making Robert and Yuri an official couple like in Art of Fighting 3 and making Kasumi Ryo's love interest (just look at Kasumi's ending in AOF3 it's obvious that she started to have feelings for the blond guy). After all Robert wears his AOF3 costume in KOF 96. Another opportunity that SNK missed was about the destruction of Southtown at the end of KOF 2000, they could say that because of that horrible event is that they founded Second Southtown (the city where Terry and Rock live in Garou MOW). The first KOF Maximum Impact was another wasted opportunity, it could easily be in the timeline of Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting, say that KOFMI1 takes place after the death of Geese and before the events of Garou MOW, I say this because Terry had his Garou suit as alternative and Rock was a teenager. About Ash Saga, since they were with that time travel stuff and Hayate is seen as playable in KOF XI and as a cameo in KOF XIII in Takuma's dojo, they could say that due to Saiki's travels and the use of the Time Gate, it brought as a consequence to bring characters from other times to the present. Those are some of my crazy ideas 😊

Hope that the next KOF game we get Maximum Impact and World Heroes characters being playable I want to see Lien meeting Shermie and Angel (the gorgeous KOF gals 🥰) Ryoko Izumo meeting Hinako, cute and very feminine grapplers gals 😊 NEO DIO against Shingo as a nice reference 😉 Ninon meeting Dolores, a dark magic user and a shaman would be a nice interaction Etc

What about KOF ‘98? Wasn’t even mentioned in the video, is it non canon? Or is it because there’s no explanation as to how fighters who dies in ‘97 were present in that year’s tournament?

KOF98, KOF2002, and KOFXII are what is called in KOF a dream match. Which means a non canon entry. there was no tournament between kof97 and 99.

Yeah, they usually do this after finishing a saga trilogy. They are usually considered the best to play because they reunite all (or most) characters from previous games, among other gameplay aspects. The story usualy follows in the next iteration with the beggining of a new saga.

Thanks for putting this all together I know it took a very long time to do so but despite being hyped for the next KOF release I just want SNK to focus on other titles like Garou City of the Wolves as well as new IP if they decided to do one and I wonder what will their newly established tokyo office will come up with because im looking forward for their first ever title either its a fighting game or a rpg or even a racing game in the style of battle gear (a racing series popular in Japan) or even a sports title only they will know and im looking forward to it.

To each its own. But I prefer the dirty street-fight story - without sci-fi, demons and pink hair - of a good ol' Art of Fighting or an early Fatal Furry. I want sweat, tears and blood. Not blue hair, sparkles and boys band looks.

My first thought upon first seeing Ash Crimson was " WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING??? EEW!!!" I've never liked Ash, first for its lady boy appearance, then just because it's a terrible character. I'm glad it's gone and can only wish it was wiped from my memory too.
