Elena Kukanova's artwork takes me away from this world and completely immerses me in her vision, ...whereas Alan Lee's fantastically detailed works were the influence behind all the set builders work in Peter Jackson's films, ...so BOTH of these two artists, equally, for me.

Frodo is one of the greatest protagonists in English literature and a truly heroic person. I will die on this hill. He was not weak or unimportant--he sacrificed body and mind and soul to save his friends. And he suffers greatly to do it.

@@pendragon2012 Personally I thought both the books and movies portrayed him well. So what if he somehow whines and relies on Sam? That would be justified, as he was carrying the One Ring the entire time. That's a huge burden he's got. Frodo just doesn’t get much credit thanks to people trying to help the other characters get more credit. It’s just not comparable imo their tasks and what they did. It seems it was still driven by Frodo since he was the one deciding to take the ring to Mordor - sure he hesitated sometimes but it always became that he would keep going.

@@TheGeneralGrievous19the problem is The Lord of the Rings has an ensemble cast, yes Frodo is the mainest of Main Characters but he makes no appearance whatever in book 3 (the first half of volume 2) or book 5 (the first half of volume 3) that's a third of the epic in which the main character makes no appearance. The list of people who could be termed Main Characters include: Frodo, Sam, Aragorn, Merry and Pippin (as a pair), the Fellowship of the Ring (as a group), the Ring itself and Sauron. In the classic sense of "Point of View" character, TLOTR has between 1 (Frodo) and 23 depending on what you count as switching the POV. Frodo is undoubtedly the most main character, protagonist is a much more wide term and in the ensemble cast of The Lord of the Rings there is more than 1.

I think more of the people who dislike Frodo are thinking of movie Frodo who is whinier and skittish than novel Frodo. That said, if we're talking about hobbits, the best are either Bilbo or Sam to me, in fact Tolkien himself holds up Sam as the prime example of a hobbit. Frodo is certainly heroic though and understand why one would prefer him.

I'm listening to it again now, and reading the books along with the audio. It's such a magical experience and I love it every year I do it. I get teary-eyed at the end of the Return of the King when they are all at the Grey Heavens. Tolkien really did create a beautiful and magical place with complex and relatable characters.

Lovely to see this illustrated and summarized. I was struck in Mordor that the orcs marched them all the way to the Morannon and they started along the very road to Barad Dur before turning off towards Mount Doom

I love how Tolkien's characters are princes, kings, descendants of important ancient heroes, with lineages that come from the awakening of the first elves and the arrival of the first men. Meanwhile we have the 4 hobbits, simple people who went so far and did the impossible.

Sorta. Sam was really the only commoner. Both Merry and Pippin are from well to do families that have held power in the Shire over many generations, both are even distantly related to Bullroarer Took. Frodo is also related to the Brandybucks and Tooks through his mother, while Bagginses (besides Frodo) never held political office they were well to do and influential members of the community. Frodo's maternal grandfather is the Master of Buckland and Frodo's great-grandfather is the Thain of the Shire to boot. Sam is just a gardener, and if he had never met Bilbo through his friendship with Frodo, he wouldn't even be able to read and write.

3:18 it's always bugged me that people refer to pre-teens as "tweens" when Tolkien clearly spelled out: "At that time Frodo was still in his tweens, as the hobbits called the irresponsible twenties between childhood and coming of age at thirty-three"

It should be noted however, that hobbit lifespans and human lifespans are different. Since hobbits are "of age" at 33 and humans at about 18, then human "tweens" line up somewhat to hobbit "tweens".

I know it's popular among some fans to say that Frodo failed, but really he succeeded as much as anyone possibly could, and in the end his faith and work was rewarded.

He certainly failed - Tolkien himself said as much. However, Tolkien also makes the point that nobody could have gotten the ring as far as Frodo did. In reality, nobody would have succeeded in the quest and Frodo did better than any one else could.

After thinking about Frodo claiming the ring, it shows the importance of mercy. It was a small act of kindness and love, Sam and Frodo not killing a pitiful traitor that pushed the difference from bitter defeat to complete and utter victory.

Honestly, I think the movies made Frodo too whiny. Don't get me wrong, Elijah Wood's acting was amazing, but the way Frodo was written comes off as too meek and scared.

Jackson's films are great but I will agree that his rendition of Frodo was less than stellar. Nothing against Elijah Wood as he's a good actor and I'm sure he was doing what he was directed to the best of his ability. The best Frodo adaptation for me is the Bakshi animated one.

The best thing about Frodo is that Tolkien does not give him “main character syndrome.” This is how I refer to that trope in movies where the hero achieves what everyone throughout the whole film has referred to as ‘the impossible.’ Despite being beaten, exhausted, and driven to the brink of defeat, at the last possible moment, the hero gives one last burst of strength that saves the day just in time. Anakin emerges from the darkness to kill the Emperor. Luke resists the dark side at the last minute and swears himself to the Jedi. Captain America locks in the computer chip to change the Helicarrier’s targets 2 seconds before it can fire. Tony Stark takes the Infinity Stones from Thanos and snaps in the nick of time. But Frodo, a mere mortal, having spent every remaining ounce of his strength, utterly starved and dehydrated, with a thousand-ton weight bearing down upon his mind, a spider’s poison in his veins, and a Wraith wound on his shoulder, standing in the place where Sauron’s power is dialed to 11 and drowns out all other powers, *just can’t freaking do it anymore.* He reaches his breaking point and just has no strength left to resist the Ring. And the Ring breaks is will. Which is *exactly* what would happen to a normal person in that situation. Frodo is not a superhero. He is a normal person. And yet his effort and his accomplishments are enough in the end. He resists the Ring all the way through Mordor. He spares Gollum. He snaps out of the Ring’s efforts to make him turn on Sam. He lures Gollum - the person with enough lust for the Ring to disregard all caution to regain it - and the Ring onto the very edge of the precipice above the Fire, making Gollum’s fall utterly inevitable. Frodo wins the day not through a superhuman last-minute burst of will that defeats the Ring’s canonically indomitable will, but through wise choices and phenomenal inner strength that encompass his absolute best. And when he can’t do it anymore, even when the Ring overpowers him and all appears to be lost, he has actually already sealed the Ring’s doom, and Middle-Earth’s salvation.

@@myriadmediamusings While Tolkien did call Sam the "chief hero" of the story, he also says that NO ONE could have gotten the ring as far as Frodo. It definitely took both to see the quest through, but Frodo is often underappreciated for sure.

The movies really don't give you a sense of just how much time actually passes in the story.

as im one of the many Tolkien fans who got introduced to Middle Earth thru the Peter Jackson films (although I did read half of The Hobbit before), I always found the difference in how Frodo's depicted on screen vs how old he actually is in the books astounding. I mean yeah hobbits live a bit longer than humans and tend to look younger, but 17 years passed in the book plot vs the 13 months in the films! Not to mention Frodo's around a decade older than Sam AND Boromir! No wonder they call him 'Mr Frodo' or 'Master Baggins', he probably never was supposed to be the older teenager I envisioned him as bc of Elijah Wood's performance. Still, I do think the casting in the films made me care for his character all the more, cuz I saw him as one kid against the entire world, and I love those kinds of personal journeys

Frodo was 33 when Bilbo left; this is when Hobbits come of age so he was about 18-20 in human terms. Frodo also acquired the One Ring at this point and basically stopped aging like Bilbo had.

@@istari0 Yes, but in the movies, they still made it seem like, at most, a few weeks or perhaps, months (due to Gandalf's going to Minas Tirith) went by, not 17 years. The only real tip-off that more time had passed was when they saw "old Bilbo" in Rivendell. So, yes, while Elijah Wood gets a pass for looking young - Merry, Pippin, Sam - all look the same age, what was their excuse for not aging? (Not trying to be argumentative, just pointing it out.) I LOVE the Peter Jackson movies, but having just re-watched the two extended cuts today, I've noticed a lot more that was changed between books and movie than I really had ever thought before.

did Hobbits have Hobbit dogs or were the dogs just as tall as them? referring to the part where he said, the farmer’s dogs chased Frodo. Or maybe they were Middle Earth version of the chihuaha? Which would be like, the size of a labrador to a hobbit?😅😅 Am I overthinking this considering that, it is all fictional anyway?

Hello nerd of the ring, I have a question: who would win in a duel between these two Feanor vs Sauron, I think they would be tied because Fingolfin did a lot of damage to Morgoth and if Feanor was more powerful than Fingolfin and Sauron was less powerful than Morgoth, they would be in a tie, right?

There are so many reasons Frodo is the hero of LOTR no matter what everyone says. To name a few: 1. Choosing to bear the ring despite the risks not once but three times: when Gandalf instructs him in the Shire, in Rivendell, and when the Fellowship breaks. 2. Saving Sam and the other hobbits several times, including against the Barrow wight 3. Standing up to the Nine at the river crossing 4. For having the sense to realize they could not reach Mordor without Gollum, making hard choices that made people think he was naive and a bleeding heart when he was just being realistic while also feeling pity. In the process he saves Sam from Gollum after they set their trap and uses his quick wit to make Gollum swear by the Ring. 5. Finally, having the will to resist the Ring for as long as he did while enduring countless hardships and perils from foes and friends alike who lacked his resilience against the ring. When he does inevitably succumb to the ring, the oath he made Gollum swear earlier still accomplishes the task in the end by leading Gollum to slip and fall. Courage is choosing to do what's right despite being afraid. Frodo embodies that truth from day one of his great journey.

Frodo told Sam about his dream in Tom Bombadil’s house, and they were likely told by Gandalf or the Elves at some point that the description matches that of Tol Eressëa. So Sam knew that’s what Frodo would see.

Gollum is a great example of an addict. How much did Tolkien himself experience addiction? He smoked. He was in a war and I am very sure soldiers were given drugs to make them Focus, or less fearfull. My grandgrandmother told me that in the 1920, in every pharmacy you could buy psychothrophic Substanzes like Heroin and Cokain. And soliders were given Substanzen like Amphetamines aka Retalines.

if for example Bombadill truly is an aspect of the One, then maybe his Thoughts spawned hobbits in a distant past, and they are simply a race born from the song sang not in the eather but on Arda. maybe that is what makes them so resiliant to Morgoth and Sauron's sorcery. They werent planned when the sdopng got corrupted, before Arda was created.

A question I've always made myself is: What are hobbits? They are never mentioned in The Silmarillion among the Sons of Ilúvatar, but we are told he was the only who could give true life through the Secret Fire, so, were they created in the Third Age by Ilúvatar? Or are they just a race of men? Would love to see you explain this topic and cover some theories as you did with Tom Bombadil.
