From their early lives growing up in the Shire, to reclaiming their home from Saruman, we cover the complete lives and travels of Merry and Pippin! These heroic hobbits would grow into not only be the tallest hobbits of all time, but also the most militarily accomplished. They would hold great leadership roles in their post-war days living in The Shire. Finally, in their last days, they would make one last trip to Rohan and Gondor.

Aragorn loved his hobbit friends dearly and held them in great honor. I like to think this moving of the two hobbits' sarcophagi was either an express command of Aragorn's before his death, or a command of Arwen's after his death, so that Strider/Telcontar and at least two of his four dear little friends could stay together for all time since the other two had to depart to Valinor for healing. It's very sweet to think that, when men go to the tombs, they see not only the tombs of the great Kings and Stewards of Men, and the grave of the mighty King Aragorn Elessar of the House of Telcontar. They also see, prominently displayed, the tombs of Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck, Great Historian, Esquire of Rohan, Co-Slayer of the Witch King, and Master of Buckland: and Peregrin "Pippin" Took Troll's-Bane, Thain of the Shire, "Prince" of the Halflings, and Savior of Prince Faramir of Ithilien. Both Hobbits also would likely have the equally illustrious titles "Ent-Friends", "Elf-Friends", and "Dwarf-Friends", as well as the titles "Companions of the Ringbearer" and/or "Blood Kin of the Ringbearer". It would be a reminder to all Gondorian and Arnorian royalty, forever after, to hold the Shire inhabitants in high honor as their fathers had done, and to treat the Shire and its domains well for the sake of Elessar's companions. Which is exactly what Aragorn would have wanted for them.

Frodo was actually the one who had been punished by Farmer Maggot in his youth for stealing vegetables from his garden. Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Fatty Bolger had actually been very clever and very brave in their assistance to Frodo, and not nearly as immature and childish as depicted in the movies.

In the appendices of Lord on the rings concerning languages, Tolkien mentions what might have kindled the rumour that Pippin was a prince of the Halflings. It turns out that in the common tongue of Middle Earth, Westron, there is a distinction between the formal and informal "you" (as is the case with, e.g., French with "tu" vs "vous"); and since the dialogues are written in English, where such a notion does not exist (anymore), the nuances of formal or informal speech are mainly "lost in translation". Moreover, Tolkien also notes that though Westron was indeed the common tongue throughout Middle Earth it did have slight variations, accents, and dialects depending on the peoples that spoke it, as well as on the places where it was spoken. One such alteration was that in the Shire the formal "you" had fallen out of use more and more with time and only "book-learned" hobbits (such as Frodo) still knew how and when to use it; more generally, Tolkien also notes that in the Shire a more informal register of Westron was used than, say, in Minas Tirith. As a result, when Pippin met Denetheor and discussed with him, the hobbit probably addressed the steward with the informal "you", which the servants would surely have remarked and concluded that this halfling must be of a high status indeed to dare speak to the ruler of the city in such a manner.
@NerdoftheRings
@NerdoftheRings 3 жыл бұрын
I love this insight! I read about this and considered putting it in this video, but it was already getting plenty lengthy. haha. Formal/informal "you" reminds me of my attempts to better learn Spanish with my Hispanic friends. Perhaps I'll do a short video later on the "Prince of the Halflings" and explain this. Thanks for bringing this up, it's a great insight!

So you're saying that while in the film version, Aragorn struggled to fight an armored troll in single combat, in the book, Pippen single handedly took one down? I think we all know who the true best warrior in the Fellowship was.
@kokocaptainqc

the collectively struggled way more in the films than in the books another example is when Gandalf faces the witch-king. in the movies Gandalf is completely overpowered by the witch-king like he didnt matter whcih i found infuriating because in the books he stays straight on shadowfax and pushes back the darkness with its own light and more likely than not, the rohirrims arriving saved the witch king here rather than Gandalf

I don't recall it being stated that Pippin took on the troll in single combat. It was a battle melee. He definitely scored the killing blow, though. He also referred to his sword (also a Dagger of Westernesse) as a "troll-bane" afterwards.

A heartening note; Hobbits are kin to men, and share the Gift of Illuvatar, which is to say, mortality. Humans linger in the Halls of Mandos for a short while, then pass beyond the circles of the world, and it's safe to assume this applies to hobbits as well. So wherever Merry and Pippin went after death, they were reunited with their friends and family on the other side.

The film adaptation of LotR implies that Sam is the oldest of the four hobbits in the Fellowship, and that Merry and Pippin are close in age - but according to the indices of the books, at the time of Bilbo's farewell party, Merrry is 19 and Pippin is only 11. And at the start of the journey from the Shire to Rivendell, then on to Moria, Frodo is 50, Sam is 38, Merry is 36 and Pippin is not yet of age, being a mere 28 years old [hobbits come of age at 33]

Maybe if they'd stuck with Aragorn fighting Sauron, they'd have given a troll back to Pippin. I'm still torn how I feel about that decision. Yeah, it wasn't in the book... but Sauron showing up in person at the Black Gate? If only Tolkien had been alive to give that change a thumbs-up.

@@Swiftbowthe film puts too much attention on Aragorn. Pippin is given the final cliffhanger moment in the battle as the Ring is about to be destroyed in the book. Gimli then saves him. The movie reduces both these characters to bumbling comic relief and gives this special heroic moment of theirs to Aragorn and Legolas, the more conventional “warriors” who you’d expect to see in such a moment. The point of the scene in the book is that despite their small size, Pippin and Gimli are also strong and capable in a fight. Also Tolkien threw a major storytelling cliché out the window by excluding Sauron, “the big bad,” from the final battle. His presence is always felt and feared, but never literal or physical, and that’s the genius of it.

@@12classics39 No, no, I get it. Did I not say I was torn? I understand exactly why Tolkien did what he did and I love and respect it. But I ALSO want to see Aragorn battle Sauron. Is that so wrong? If it helps, Aragorn should absolutely be defeated by Sauron in said fight. Like on the brink of death. Gimli saving Pippin only comes up during the Fields of Cormallen, though, when they're talking about the aftermath. Also, let's be fair here... Gimli DID get his share of badass moments in the movies. I agree they did lean into the comical a bit too much, but he was never "bumbling." And Tolkien ALSO used Pippin for comic relief. Pippin grew as a character in both mediums. I though the biggest mistake in the movie regarding the Hobbits (well, aside from skipping my favorite chapter, the Scouring of the Shire), was shoving Merry into the Battle of the Black Gate and stealing Pippin's thunder. He should have still been recovering, and he didn't really need another hero moment like Pippin deserved.

I really like your choice of artwork, like real paintings, not the "generic" digital fantasy drawings we see alot these days, and also that most of them aren't movie depictions which everyone is faimilar with anyways.

i could be wrong maybe some of them are digital but that wasn't really the point but the style, is what i like - whatever "tools" has been used in the creation of them.

I didn’t read the books until after I saw theatrical Fellowship of the Rings. Even though the movies differ from the books, in both cases, Merry and Pippin were my favorite characters. Not only had they the best stories IMO they were also the most relatable

So awesome. I love the ending of their story, as the last members of the fellowship reunite. It reinforces the incredible friendship they had, and shows they continued to have it well after the War of the Ring. And getting buried in the Tomb of the Kings in Minas Tirith beside none other than King Elessar. Words cannot express what an incredible honour that is and it speaks volumes to their character and deeds.

It's interesting to me that Gandalf has so little patience for Pippin. I would assume that Pippin is almost a pure embodiment of the gentle mischief and curiosity which draws Gandalf to the Shire and the Baggins in the first place!

Had it been Merry & Pippin before the quest who could say fir certain that they would have such courage. But no, one does not simply take the Shire and expect victory over tears and sorrow of the hobbits. Let the war begin!

It’s always interesting to compare the actual canon story with the films we grew up with. The films capture most of what happened, but the books provide so much more depth and detail. The end tale of all these beloved characters, something the films don’t explore too much in detail other than Frodo and Bilbo, are especially poignant, and often lead to a lump in my throat. Great video as always.

I Loved the Lord of the Rings movies, but I had never delved into the books before. So sorry for my ignorance to the stories of the books, I had never realized that the stories were so eye-opening, thought-provoking and just plain mind blowing! Thank you so much for the backstories and conclusions of some loved characters... and some of the unloved characters just the same. I'm thrilled that I've only been able to find out about the story's legacy through seeing you're channel. Though I may struggle to keep up with the names, the stories are completely intriguing and utterly fascinating!😊🙂

Very interesting and as I first entered Tolkien universe via other media than the books you given me more perspective on these characters as well as everything in your excellent videos. My first contact was thru a radio theater play version of The Hobbit (in Swedish and many episodes maybe in the 70's) and later the first movies my Peter Jackson. Not until after that stage I started to read his books (guess age and some maturity finally caught me lol). On a more funny side I can tell you that I have finally came into peace with myself as I always been annoyed by the character Merry in the movie and I will not go into detail why as I don't want to hurt anyones feelings. Let us just remember that I am now older and more tolerant and we are fortunate to lived in the times where Tolkien's masterpieces exist.

Having only seen the movies and several videos like this one, I always been surprised by how different the relationship feels different between the four hobbits of the Fellowship. In the movies, Sam joins by accident at the very start, then Merry and Pippin are ran into by accident, they barely seem to know each others and they suddently leave everything behind to help Frodo, always weirded me out back before I learned more about the books.

People question me whenever I say Pippin is the best of the hobbits because he’s always the clutz who seemingly makes everything worse, but when push came to shove and Sauron himself probed his mind in search for answers on the ring, not only did Pippin stand strong enough to keep Frodo a secret, he was able to trick the Deceiver himself into thinking he had the ring and became a decoy, which allowed Frodo to succeed.
