That's kind of the problem. Racism and hate isn't just a couple asshats wearing sheets. Its just casually thrown around by any old fool who has a keyboard. Racism is deeply embedded in American society (and to be fair, lots of other societies as well, but Congress tends to have little interest in other places unless they can be exploited or blown up.) And the fact that people like you (not to mention that off-screen senator and his "hate hoax" bullocks!) being equally willing to just casually dismiss hateful speech just shows why we need a coordinated effort if we want any chance of stopping it. Not that I trust Congress to do any kind of good job at that but even having the hearing shows the country that they're at least thinking about taking it seriously.

The thing about that... there are some really good videos on youtube that show how fascists use irony, sarcasm and faux self-deprecation strategically to advance their actual racist causes. I don't remember video titles right now but Innuendostudios and Contrapoints have done a good job on it, well worth watching.

Part is american culture and the emphasis on individualism. So everyone thinks they can be president and that they deserve it, also elections are more about individual candidates rather than parties. Other reason is, as you have correctly guessed, exposure. I expect Buttigieg to go from Mayor to Senator or Governor pretty quick after this race.

Whatever the reason is it really a negative if there are many options? We can guess who has chances to win but remember that until Iowa 2016 Bernie was at 3% or something close to that in the polls. Let them run and we may find some other hidden gems, so to speak. For example I didn’t know who Andrew Young was before this election.
