Dirk Nowitzki is a well respected player across NBA community. However, it wasn't always like that. He was always at least a top 10 player who had the reputation of melting down in the playoffs. Is there any validity to that claim and even if so, how good was he? To answer these question, I made this video analyzing the confusing legacy of Dirk Nowitzki. I hope you enjoy it.

legacy of dirk is pretty clear and straightforward.. one of the most loyal, humble players who carried his team to beat the heatles to win a championship.

This is BS. The reason the mavs didn't get more rings wasn't because of Dirk. It was complete incompetence in the front office. He averaged 25 pts and 10 rebounds in the 125 playoff games he played in. Some might have cast those doubts but they didn't think it through. Cuban has been extremely lucky to largely escape the criticism for all the blundrrs with the rosters. He drafted and then traded kelly olinic with Yanis still on the board and his GM staking his reputation on Yanis being the guy to get. He let Steve Nash walk for nothing. He let Jalen Brunson walk for nothing. He broke up the championship team not giving them a chance to defend the title. There are others but this is enough to get my point across.

I agree with this take. I mentioned towards the end of the video that throughout his prime, he took sub-par rosters to 50+ wins. However, the way Dirk played in the 2006 finals and 2007 playoffs greatly contributed to the Mavericks getting eliminated.

If anything Dirk is one of the most underrated superstars, working with what he had. People forget about the fits he gave opposing coaches with all of the mismatches and floor spacing for shooters and rim attackers Dallas never maximized. Dallas roster has always been poorly constructed. They traded away multiple all star and hall of fame guards. Kidd, Nash, Harris, Brunson No decent center until Tyson Chandler. Devin Harris was really the only guard that could take advantage of the huge floor spacing and mismatches Dirk trademarked and attack the rim to collapse the defense. Dirk never had good defensive players to defend opposing guards. In the 2006 finals Dallas lost 3 games by a total of 6 points and D Wade averaged 16 free throws per game 2nd all time in finales history only behind Shaq at 17 per game with LA. Wade literally got every call in game 5 and 6 shooting 46 combined free throws. Dallas lost game 5 by 1 point and game 6 by 3 points. Poor officiating and bad coaching for not running zone against bad 3 point shooting team.

Dirks problem in the play offs was a result of Dirks lack of an aggressive instinct that star players must have when they carry a team deep into play offs. I remember a game in the play offs where the Mavericks were playing the Lakers. Dirk and Kobe met under the basket on a Kobe drive, as Dirk rose up to block Kobe's drive, Kobe used his off hand to knock Dirk out of his way. That was clearly an offensive foul. Dirk's reaction was immediately to look to the referee to call a foul, to defend him. Being a champion in the NBA requires that in the play offs you have to be able to get physical on both offense and defense. When an opponent fouls you hard you have to be able to return their physicality or you will get dominate. Dirk just is too nice of a guy to get rough to even defend himself. He did develop that fade away jump shot with the lead leg flying up putting that knee into a player trying to defend him though.

Dirk is a top 20 player of all time and it wasn’t his fault he didn’t win more rings. Horrible take!!

That isn't the conclusion that I came to? I said that even though his under performances cost the Mavs a few playoff games, they wouldn't be anywhere near contenders without Dirk since he consistently took depleted Mavs rosters to 50+ wins.

Dirks supporitng cast was the WORST compared to all the other stars at the time besides Lebrons Cavs. Yet he still averaged 55+ Wins for over 10 seasons. The Mavs over performed in the regular season every year besides 2011, and the better teams just beat them up until that point every playoffs.
