Everything you ever wanted to know about this classic film, and incidentally five-act structure (is that even allowed??).

I think your mathematical approach to structure undermines the subject, and the way you dismiss the two-part theory makes this clear. Percentage doesn't really matter. Content does.

There's a book that talks about the 5 act structure - Into the Woods by John Yorke. It has some examples (not Full Metal) and would be interesting to see if you find any correlations or deviations there.

I am aware of that book, and I watched a talk by Yorke. I'm not convinced his 5 acts are different from conventional 3-act structure (where his acts 2-4 map onto act 2), but 5-act structure is something I'd like to learn more about. I might try reading his book and watching movies by Tarantino and Fincher, which are purported to have 5 acts.

@@equipmentforliving7253 Got it. I agree that his 5-act theory is the 3-act broken into 5. Do you have more examples of movies (esp contemporary say last 20-25 years) that follow a different 5 act structure unique from just expanding 3 into 5?

@@punitthakkar4193 Marvel's recent Eternals movie may have been in 5 acts, I saw it in the cinema so wasn't timing, but it felt like it might have been in 5 true acts. I've heard that Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has 5 true acts, but I haven't seen it since it released, which was before I had the skill of breaking down movies in real time. I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head, but I hope to find more!

it's structure isn't "confusing", it's just atypical.

KZfaq looks at me funny when I choose titles that aren't grabby - I agree with you completely. In fact I'd say it's more classical in structure than anything.

Great analysis but wdym he fumbled his gun didn't the gun gumed?

He definitely seems to hesitate, and have difficulty firing the gun - could be psychological, could be a jam :)

If there is a structure, it's First Act, up to the death of Pyle; Second Act, Joker in Vietnam; Third Act begins with entrance of Animal Mother, ends with killing the sniper, the mercy killing, then the song.

Those are all very important beats for sure, but I don't think that tracks all the shifts in tone

Is it possible Kubrick just likes his "non-submersible units" and is not concerned with overall structure ?
@equipmentforliving72539 ай бұрын
Kubrick's films are strongly structured in fifths, and he had an analytical mind, so I'd be very surprised if he was not concerned with overall structure!
