Always good to know, even if the majority of Amanda's ire is clearly focused on how little this movie has to do what with the real-life events. We all know that the majority of "based on a true story" movies are far more than _slightly_ fictionalized, even when the unproven supernatural isn't part of the equation.

This movie premise has made me really uncomfortable from the start. Not only are they painting a murderer as innocent for the sake of a horror movie, but if the perpetrator actually believed he had been possessed it’s just exploiting a tragic case of severe mental health issues along with the murder. It didn’t have to be based on a true story :/
@UnderTheTableGremlin
@UnderTheTableGremlin 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. He probably had some sort of psychiatric issues rather than actually being possessed. That’s what a lot of “possessions” probably were but they make it sound like “oh this is the devil doing this”

@creativedesignation7880
@creativedesignation7880 3 жыл бұрын
@@UnderTheTableGremlin There is a theory that some cases of "possesion" might have actually been people unable to control some of their actions, because they had dissociative identity disorder. This would also explain why exorcisms, which are usually really just torture assisted by a loved one, would "cure" the person: the intense trauma simply had them dissociate even further and in the worst case split off a new personality (alter) who was entirely submissive, in order to protect themselves from further harm.
@smallandstressed2364
@smallandstressed2364 3 жыл бұрын
@@creativedesignation7880 - to clarify: people with DID aren’t likely to murder people, but what someone might mistake as “possession” could just be an alter and an “exorcism” could cause a trauma response that makes them more submissive. The context of this thread has something to do with murder and I just wanted to make sure people don’t think that an alter would commit murder. Aside from that, that theory is rather interesting.

That's what's rubbing me the wrong way, too, I just haven't found words for it until now. Before I thought it was because they were validating the "devil told me to!" excuse in court cases. So many human rights atrocities are committed because entire communities believe conditions like schizophrenia are demonic possession. It's horrific. By the way, thank you Amanda, for pointing out how none of the posessed victims ever seem to have any sort of physical repurcussion. As an epileptic, if I have a seizure -- and be it only a small, tiny one for about 40 seconds-- my body aches like it just got hit by a freaking truck on the highway and I have the worst muscle aches for the next couple of days; if a seizure is particularly bad, I sometimes have issues remembering things and take quite a while to snap out of this state and fully function again. So yeah, the people in these movies should either all be dead due to all the twisting and contorsions they're put through, or not be able to move for at least an entire month; with a whole lot of broken bones and/or muscle strains.

Doesn't it seem a little weird how they're using a real life murderer and making this whole movie about how he was actually a good guy and was possessed by a demon? The first two movies were fine because no one died in those, but there was an actual victim here. Even if they changed his name, they didn't change any of the other names. This is a movie about how Arne Johnson was possessed by a demon so it wasn't his fault that he killed a guy. In real life it was his fault. I think they should've picked another Warren case to base this off of, or if they really wanted to do this case they could've done a 100% fictional version of it and make all the characters original. The movie they did do was already 99% fictional anyway.

"They didn't use his actual name out of respect or maybe because they werent allowed to...." Nah, these movies are so full of it and paint the Warrens as these wonderful selfless heroes when they were absolutely money grubbing fame hounds. Not even gonna get touch on the fact of whether its real or not, but at best, theyre assholes, and at worst theyre con artists. In the previous film they repeadetly denigrate another paranormal investigator, who by all accounts was actually the main one involved in the case and was actually a nice person. The movie made him out to be the money grubber and the jerk. I could go on, but the point is, nothing about these movies is remotely respectful to anyone involved. The only ones benefiting are the studio execs and the Warrens who get to inflate their egos and get paid

I was thinking that the whole time I was watching this film 😅 While I do wish real life Satanists had chosen a *different name* for themselves (naming your belief system in honour of the embodiment of sin and the ultimate evil in someone else's _preexisting_ belief system seems like a weird choice when you honestly aren't trying to antagonise anybody), I gather that they aren't all that interested in the devil and most don't even believe that Satan is real. Portraying them consorting with demons and getting magical powers from hell is probably gonna upset them, especially since it's what people _always_ paint them out to be.

I guess Isla killed her Father for the holy man bit, but then the rules were that it had to be a murder suicide, which made no sense because if the whole curse thing worked, who was going to be the suicide for the holy man? 4) Ed going blind again in the climax. I mean he did it in The Conjuring 2, its been done. 5) Lorraine having that whole headache vision at the beginning when everything was going nuts. 6) The Priest getting hit over the head with the plate and getting knocked the hell out, that was by far one of the funniest moments.

yeah i thought it would be more exorcism of emily rose and less whatever it was. i wish they wouldn't have even used this story. they set up this court stuff that only vaguely mattered, was boring, and wasted a lot of time. lol.

@@gabbyabbott4965 That’s a tv show based on a book that was loosely inspired by Lovecraft’s stories. The show is great though! @@antoniodiavolo my favorite depiction of any Lovecraftian horror is anything by Alan Moore. It’s both a critique of Lovecraft’s racism and many other biases but also a great retelling of the horror. It’s mostly comics though but I still highly recommend it.

Watched this with my brother and we were both very disappointed. My biggest issue with the movie is the witch. She has no real motivations and we feel nothing when she kills her father or when she dies. She doesn't even get a moment of fear before she dies. Her motivation is literally just because she's evil and evil doesn't need a reason which really bothered me. She was there for basically no reason. The story was rough all the way through. Sure in my opinion the film looked good and the acting was fine but those can't carry a story alone.

The literal only redeeming quality of this film was how cute the movie versions of Ed and Lorraine are. Like I could watch eighteen hours of them just being adorable. The rest of the film was just white noise that I tuned out because it honestly made me mad. Pretty sure Arne had some kind of psychiatric issue rather than demon possession but they make it seem like he’s completely innocent despite murdering someone (in front of an eye witness, mind you).
