There's this cycle where Nick is playing well, enjoying himself, and the fans enjoy him. Then, at some point, he starts to argue with umpires, smash stuff, tank etc., and the fans don't like him again. He just keeps going on and on in this endless loop, never able to escape it

You can see Kyrgios cry at the end of his match in a close, devastating loss against Federer in the 2017 Laver Cup, which cinched the win for Team Europe. IMO it really displayed that Kyrgios, for all his talk about "not caring about tennis", has more heart for tennis than most believe but he's 100x more likely to give it his all when he's *part of a team*. The guy absolutely excels in team events (basketball, doubles w/ Kokkinakis, Laver Cup). In singles events, when the only person you can let down is yourself, it can be much harder to find the motivation to play at 100%. In a team event, you have all your teammates you have to be accountable for where you don't want to let them down. I wonder if he's one of those people who never plays his absolute best unless it's for a teammate. Some people are hardwired that way. Maybe the reason why he loves basketball & entertains notions of a basketball career is because it's a team sport where everyone has each other's backs. To see him so crushed and broken at the end of that Laver Cup match showed that he really wanted the win for himself...and for the team. TL;DR: deep down Nick Kyrgios is a team player. In a weird way, one could argue he cares about others more than himself.

He’s his own worst enemy. I think he’s one of the most naturally gifted players the sport has ever seen, but he has to start acting like a professional. I think he could win a slam, genuinely.

A great unbiased summary of Nick's career. As an Aussie, I've always had trouble warming to him, despite his recent success. I'm often embarrassed by his antics, lack of respect and failure to follow the rules. One thing that wasn't mentioned is how Nick's tense relationship with Novak has changed following Novak's 2022 ban from playing at the Australian Open and now they have spoken warmly and lovingly of each other at Wimbledon.

He just won Atlanta Doubles. His amazing hands make him one of the craftiest doubles players around. I’m a fan. I think he’s great for the sport. Brings some much needed swagginess.

It bears remembering that his supposed 'fall' came over 2020/2021 during the height of the pandemic where he chose to sit out a large portion of the tennis year, notwithstanding other issues like border controls in Australia etc which would have prevented him from playing even if he wanted. he only clocked 9 matches in 2020, most of them at the Australian Open pretty hard to mantain a top ranking if you don't play. 32 matches in 2022 so far vs 23 matches in 2021/2022 combined.

I asked them for a quick picture as we stood in line. Andy said sure. Nick looked me dead in the eyes and said, "No." So Nick stood there as Andy and I took a picture. Like him or hate him, Nick will always be Nick.

Nick can be a jerk but no more so than Medvedev, Zverev and Shapalov, whom the ATP tries desperately to promote. Also, him calling out Warwrinka for dating a teen girl is NOT worse than Warwrinka actually leaving his wife, who had just given birth to his kid, in order to date teen girls.

NK reignited my love for tennis and has gotten thousands of people to love tennis who never would’ve. The sport isn’t the same if everyone’s a Nick kyrgios but every sport needs its great entertainer and NK delivers on that front. If the new fans will remain fans for life NK will have been undeniably good for the sport.

Nick is a fascinating player. Though his behavior is often times inexcusable at best, he's certainly entertaining with his unique shot making and crowd engagement. Also shoutouts to FYB. They taught the best serve technique that made my serve incredibly consistent, to the point that I was left thinking that even some of the highest level pros could really learn from this site.

I think his antics expose how soft the umpires have become. He's not the only brat out there, but it makes laugh when he went to the toilets to smash his racquets to avoid a code violation. I know tennis organisers don't want to lose money by banning players for throwing objects, but a line has to be drawn. Having said that, nick has revived my tenuous interest in tennis. If he was a racing driver, he'd be a win or spin type of driver, you never know what's next

To me, Kyrgios' trick shots and unique approach to playing tennis are lots of fun to watch, but I find his on-court behavior intolerable. It's not just the major outbursts, but even smaller things like talking immediately before his opponent serves which shows his disrespect for his opponent and for the game. I don't understand how people are still such devoted fans of Kyrgios when he literally yells at fans and even his own box for supporting him and encouraging him when he seemingly doesn't want them to, and for not giving him enough support when he thinks he deserves it.

Tennis is a sport where it is difficult to hide your flaws. Everyone can see you rising up or breaking down. One thing for sure is that despite his countless failings, everyone wants to see him succeed and get himself together. I hope he finds the right answer.

With the amount of trouble Nick has gotten it’s easy to forget he has the most amazing talent he has and possibly Grand Slam winning potential (as demonstrated at Wimbledon this year). It’s more noticeable this year he’s matured a lot more and is playing at a way he shows passion. As a fan (please don’t hate me) I do hope he carries that passion for the rest of his career

It’s kind of funny how split Australia is on Nick everyone has an opinion on him but id say in recent times he’s been getting more and more popular and accepted

I personally like Kyrgios. His antics and unpredictable shots are so interesting. And to those who complain "it's not professional to do underhand serves/trick shots", my counter argument is well, is it against the rules? Isn't the goal of tennis to win points? Aren't players supposed to be able to react to shots accordingly? It's not Nick's fault you were expecting a banger serve out wide but got a soft underhand instead. It's a smart play. As for his comments, I think sometimes it's understandable. Sometimes I can understand why he would be upset at the crowd. Yes, the players should "be professional" and not get caught up with the crowd, but at the same time, the crowd should have some kind of code of conduct as well (or a more policed one). And I feel sometimes the crowd can cross the line. I'm not saying Nick also doesn't cross the line, especially with comments against his opponent or officials. He does, and fairly often. I'm just saying that I can see where he is coming from sometimes.

I don’t hate Nick. And the “showman” stuff I’m okay with. But I don’t find constantly whining endearing. (He’s the biggest whiner on tour, but because he’s “cool” folks like to overlook that). I don’t find looking for any excuse to argue with the crowd or umpire damn near every match entertaining. While it seems to be more than just needing to “grow up”. It seems like he has some legit internal issues. And the people hyping up his antics don’t help him grow or help him deal with whatever issues he’s dealing with.

man really out there playing thug tennis and acting like he's playing with a homie and i got to say, he does it well. his match against Djokovic was damn good. i absolutely think he needs to take it back to an accpetable level but the dude can play very well, would be a shame if he can't keep within within limits

He is what tennis needs. He's one of many who are outcasted early for playing tennis "looking differently" from the ideal player that's generalized as higher class. I've played 10+ years from an area of town described as "ghetto" with players that were completely unorthodox to compete with those from families pouring thousands into their lessons and equipment even in high school. I can't begin to describe the discrimination we got as a team after beating a team that "looked better" than us. This day in age, the rules have never said what a tennis player looks like and needs to act like. The snarky snob attitudes needs to stop. It's far better than in the past, but still remains from preconceived notions.

I don't really like him, but I find him entertaining. When he's focused and plays 100%, he's easily Top 10 material.

As a football fan, the only time I watch tennis is when Nick Kyrgios is playing.

he IS the best thing that happened to tennis sincefeder and serena debut 25 years ago. only player to beat the big 4 on the first try. im excited he is back. THE SPRING OF ALCARZ AND THD SUMMER OF KYRGIOS. They are both the best thing to mens tennis..kyrgios wats great and especially dc and rogers cup kyrgiois seems to understand that he is probably the best at the net in tennis todsy. and his biggest weapon is his second serve. better than almost everyone's first serve but averages in the 120-130s which for a second serve is unheard of. If Kyrgios snd alcaraz wanted to they are botyh unbeatable and can hit winners from anywhere on the court. Tsitzi Zverev and medvedev dont possess the weapons and the power that they do watching kyrgios flick his wrist and set off a rocket is something I've never seen before. Never seen a shot that is so fast at the guys feet but its so fast he cant even get the racquet back and that includes all the big 4. he probably is the only player who has beaten novak more than lost to him.

While I never condone his antics whenever he gets flustered, I respect his approach to the game and how he thinks outside the box with certain shots. He’s just different, he brings a different level of excitement to the game cuz he’s so unpredictable and his talent is undeniable. Can’t wait to see what he’ll do next 😝

NK is the most talented player. He said he doesnt practice on court that much. See his pre-match warm up with Milan from Tenfitmen. Its hilarious. He was messing around in a hoodie. Also, Mouratoglou even said NK doesnt even take his fitness program seriously too. Despite this, he became a doubles Grand Slam Champ and made Wimby singles finals. That is all talent.

The big three have almost made it where it will be hard for whoever comes after to have a big profile. As of now you're really only talking Medvedev, Zverev, Alcaraz, Tsitsipas and Krygios of the younger players who have any sort of name recognition. Hopefully Krygios can get and stay in the top 20 for a while and challenge for these titles as he brings interest to the sport.

Kyrgios as a player has fantastic serve and tremendous touch, but his mental side holds him back (e.g. ability to handle pressure), just as you mentioned, the huge expectations cast on him at an early age didn't help. If he had the mental toughness or work ethic or someone like Alex De Minaur, he would have been a consistent top 10 player. Right now he enjoys being a lower-ranked player who can beat a top 5 player whenever he feels like it. I think he uses these outbursts or behavioural things to cast distractions on his performance. Quite often you can see he is motivated to beat top players but don't care as much (or struggles to stay motivated) when playing lower ranked players. He is basically a tennis version of an internet troll, I think he secretly enjoys trolling (red hat at Wimbledon is a classic example). Like him or hate him, his issues constantly being on the spotlight attracts attention and media focus, it might not be good for his personal brand but it attracts a lot of attention on the sport (because people either like him for not conforming, or hate him for his antics). There isn't a character like him (thankfully) in the WTA and you can see how boring the WTA has been lately.

He's absolutely good for the game. I think if the media hammered him *less* for the "wasted potential", then ironically I think we would've have seen that "potential" more over the years.

As a guy that likes WWE and tennis, Kyrgios is one of my favorites because he feels like he should be a WWE guy the way he works the crowd and talks. I'm also a sucker for good serving, probably since I root for US players and that's the archetype.

Kyrgios has amazing talent, just like Federer. The difference is Federer acknowledged his weakness and humbled himself. He worked on his backhand, which took discipline. Something Kyrgios doesn’t have. DISCIPLINE.

I was at his match at the western and southern. I don’t remember much about it except for when he walked into the locker room hallway and smashed his racquets. He is a very good player and I respect his game. His tweeners and underarms are the greatest. Even better then that is his ability to win any point. He could be in a lengthy rally he’d barely be in control of and wind up and smash a winner.

I think Steven of Just Slap Tennis shared one of the best reasons as to why he acts this way on court, branding. True, but for me, Nick is not just that, he is a combination of what I expect to see in a tennis match, a good play and something that would excite me (make me laugh, think and wonder why is he mad lol). Nick, arguably has one of the best serves in recent memory, and is one of the most followed players on tour as well. Is he good for the game? Yes! Is he great for the game? Maybe, but one thing is certain with me, when he said "I'm really good" after that Wimbledon 1st round win against Krajinovic, I believed him, it would have been better if he won the whole event, but taking a set against Novak in a Wimbledon final is a rare feat for anyone. Can't wait for what Nick has to offer, and hopefully he wins a slam soon. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it.

As an Australian I'm obliged to like him and often defending him much like our other "not the best behaving Aussies" like Bernard Tomic, Andrew Simmons and even Lleyton Hewitt's yelling antics. But as a sports spectator I personally cannot watch them.

Nick is one of the reasons I actually got interested in Tennis. Please don’t get me the wrong way but it’s always been hard for me to really get into Tennis, particularly because it always felt so “stiff” and “traditional” and Nick has done a great job in making the sport more accessible for people like me.
