as someone who went from Protestant to Catholic I wish the sectarian angle were left out of this. This was a political fight. The UVF/UDA were not killing Catholics because they believed the host at communion was the real presence of Christ, they killed them because they backed reuniting Northern Ireland with Ireland. and vice versa

@Conor Fields The British turned it into a "them and us" tribalism. The British gave power to the Protestants. The I R As goal (many of whom were not only Protestant but english too ) was to take down that power, not take down protestants. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- extra if ye want to read more ;? They did not oppose Protestant Religion - ITS IN THEIR FLAG ---- ORANGE ! There was (is) English protestants in both IRA and Sinn Fein and Republican ranks......all the way back to Wolfe Tone , Daniel O Connell to Countess Markievz .....up to the CinC of the Provisional I R A itself. (an English born Protestant not embarrassed in the least by his accent) --------------------------------------------- I R A/ Republics flag ; PEACE BETWEEN GREEN AND ORANGE (in equal measure with equal rights despite the fact that they were a very small minority on the island --- a very strong symbol of the NON sectarianism of Republicanism). Re-public's central definition is that power is returned to the PUBLIC , the people , *not to some gods churches or queens* . Sinn Feins weekly magazine (An Phoblacht) is titled "The People". *Not certain people* THE People. ----------------------------------- Thats theyd put you in jail for 6 months if you were caught with it. Its called "The Threat of a Good Example" IE ; An idea that might catch on in Scotland or Wales ? Or India , Pakistan , Afghanistan , South Africa , Palestine , Nicaragua, Vietnam, Cambodia , Laos, and all the other countries that Super-Powers like Britain and the USA "LIBERATED" in WW2 , only to find out that any idea of "Liberation" would be met with 15 million tons of bombs. The tactics used in Vietnam were the same tactics taught by Sir Robert Thompson in Malaya - Kill them all , kill their livestock , burn their crops and villages and confine anyone left alive to camps (called Strategic hamlets) Thompson advised the RAND corporation on how to kill 4 million Viets. "Divide and conquer " had never known such extremes. Another British diplomat famously advised the Japanese how to subdue Manchuria before WW2; " *Do what we did in Ireland. Destroy their culture, Language, Sports and traditions" ( and yes, even our native language was illegal. Gatherings of more than 3 men were illegal. Back before O Connell , school for Catholics was illegal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_Laws Ireland was not the only country wanting Reform and Liberation in 1916 to 1969 to 1998. Those same laws were applied in ANY country if they thought it would work , such as Indian textile workers forced to buy traditional Indian clothes made in Manchester.........(made by working people who died of respiratory illnesses for wages verging on slave labour) Thats like forcing the Arabs to buy sand. No different than Iraq importing oil from Texas.(FACT) ------------------------------------------------------------ The BBC liked to portray the IRA/ Republicanism as "300 odd terrorists who should be arrested and everythings done " when in fact it was a HUGE MOVEMENT of PEOPLE , NORTH and SOUTH. Its the Irish FLAG. They were the creators of the REPUBLIC and had Irelands First IRISH government with a SINN FEIN President. The two parties who have governed Ireland ever since 1919 (a landslide electoral victory 85 /105 ) BANNED , both were originally Sinn Fein. So , Ireland has been government by 2 parties both of which were two factions of Sinn Fein , who split because of different opinions on the British Peace Treaty. ( thats the "Peace" treaty which caused a *civil war* ), and the British gave weapons and money to the side who supported THEIR "PEACE" TREATY. --------------------------------------------------------- The British practiced this tactic on 1/3 of the globe. But they met their match in Ireland. They ruled millions India with just 10,000 civil servants. But failed to understand people only 1/2 hour sailing away ?? The "cream" of British Intelligence apparatus , wiped out in one morning in 12 different locations simultaneously ?? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cairo_Gang ---------------------------------------------------------------- They claim the same for "Al KEEDA / TERRY TABILAN " A few nuts to be killed--- problem solved. ? Because admitting that the whole of Afghanistan, including the ANA was opposed to armed the occupation of their own country (OBVIOUSLY) doesnt make for good viewing and *then BRITISH PEOPLE would want their troops to come home* Just as Lloyd George said to FDR " *If the men knew why they fight this war it would stop tomorrow* . But they dont know, and must not know" ----------------------------------------------------------------- They lie. Its the oldest political tactic in history. But victims who resist oppression just need to point. Palestinians dont need speeches. All they need is photographs. Its why Battle of Bogside (clive limpkins photos) was a criminal offense to own. 6 months in jail just for a book , made and printed in england ??/ *If it had been legal* (along with every other Republican publication) , *it might have stopped a lot of bloodshed* *It would have turned World opinion* British peoples opinion has changed DRASTICALLY, because its only now that British kids are growing up reading about the actual facts of the I R A campaign, rather than growing up believing what the BBC wanted them to believe. The Nazis were the last to make books illegal. Check the book on google images Clive limpkin; Battle of Bogside.

Both sides still have large amounts of explosives and guns. I remember seeing the weapons that were “decommissioned”, it was a joke. They were virtual antiques or just obviously non functional. The rust on one of the rifles stood out a mile in one piece of footage I saw. I’m not taking sides here, but the PIRA would never have got to the negotiation table without their arsenals hidden in the North and South. They’re still able to deploy functional modern weapons and only a fool would believe they’ve disarmed. I hope and pray that the peace holds. For violence to flare up again would be a tragedy. We’ve got to bear in mind that mainly young men are now falling prey to drug addiction in the north. It angers me that doctors are dishing out drugs such as Lyrica, which is highly addictive and creating ready made addicts who will no doubt turn to illegal drugs. These young men have potential which is being destroyed so early on. They need proper jobs and some real prospects, not a future without hope. It’s almost as if the NHS is being used to make sure there’s no fight in them in the future. I hope I’m wrong.

@Seymour Crack Killing 100, presumably innocent civilians, for every one of our innocent civilians killed, is a horrendous war crime. It's far worse then the most sadistic things that I think the Black and Tans ever did, presumably on par, with the 300 citizens of, I think it was Limerick...the British officer that signed the British surrender to the USA, at the US war of Independence, sailed to Ireland and rounded up 300 people from an Irish city, decapitated them, and put their heads on pikes around the city walls, for a rebellion that happened in the city, it's roughly on par with that. It's literally one of the most sadistic of the Nazi strategies in WW2. That's genuinely sadistic.

@Seymour Crack If your a British loyalist, your terrorists have presumably heavily suger coated British history in Ireland, after Irish history as unbanned in northern Ireland, for the exact same reason that German history was banned in Germany after WW2.
@davidodonovan16994 жыл бұрын
@Seymour Crack ethnic cleansing is the reason why their is a protestant majority in Northern Ireland. Via burning people out of their homes, direct targeting of civilians and other war crimes. God backed the IRA in the Irish war of Independence. The hatred that British loyalists have in their hearts, is what caused the troubles and the Irish War of Independence. This could have all been sorted out sometime around 1908-1912. But your attitude, like Jacobs brothers in the old testament, is the reason why this all happened. I'm convinced, based on a message that the Lord gave me, backed up on your mindset, and countless others like you, that the only reason why your mindset didn't do a mass genocide, directly targeting civilians, far more then your people already did, was for fear of military intervention from the USA, particularly Irish USA, that saved countless lives, by arming the IRA to fight off people like you.

Interesting to see Frizzell's Fish Shop in shot (4min 34). This film was made in 1987 but the building was destroyed in a premature explosion in 1993 which killed one of the bombers and eight innocent civilians who were doing their Saturday grocery shopping. It also killed one UDA member allegedly. They were clearly after "Newman Enterprises" or whatever front organisation was then occupying the upstairs office. So: one legitimate target (by their own classification); one own goal: and eight "collateral damage" deaths. Pretty incompetent, you have to say.
@billyleadbitter56615 жыл бұрын
No UDA men got killed the offices were upstairs so they deliver a bomb that goes off early killing men,women and children ,everybody knows it was Adairs C company the PIRA wanted to kill as C company killed anybody within the Nationalist community.The Republican movement murdered with impunity anybody they thought legitimate targets ,why shoot dead Norris Mcwhirter a gentleman who's day job was telling people who were in the Guinness book of records,why murder Airey Neave who escaped from Colditz castle cos he was a tory and in Thatchers party and in his late 70s.Going into the late 80s the Loyalist groups targeted nationalists anywhere they found them like Sean Graham's bookmakers or the Rising sun pub(after the Shankill atrocity)peace is peace but the men of violence are coming back as we see with 2 car bomb attacks in Londonderry, feel for the generation who have grown up with peace if the terrorists return.The really annoying thing for me is Brexit and how the EU think it's a great opportunity to unite the island these tools are clueless it will bring murder and mayhem as i can't see the mainly Protestant security forces taking orders from the mainly Catholic gardai, gardai patrols going through Loyalist areas would be targeted for attack as would the Irish Defence Force
@Wally-H5 жыл бұрын
The IRA killed Norris McWhirter's brother Ross in 1975, not the man himself. McWhirter was murdered because he offered a £50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of IRA bombers. Just to be clear, I am English and not an IRA supporter but I wanted to point out that it isn't true to imply the IRA had no motive for that killing. You also miss identified the victim. @@billyleadbitter5661

Excellent reporter. I always admired him and still do. However, this is a biased view of a terrible war that was going on in my country. The IRA were forced to defend the Catholics after attempted ethnic cleansing and being treated as second class citizens in their own country. There no joy in any war! People we’re murdered on both sides of the community. It was a terrible and very unfortunate bloody time to grow up in our history. A beautiful country destroyed with bombs, the people were living with daily uncertainty. I hope that our children will have a better future and more peaceful life. But history often repeat’s it’s self. Religion is a powerful divide and control of people. We all need to move forward and not backwards.
