We lived next door to a police officer. Cop was absolutely sizing you up when he was playing with Sadie and talking to you. He let you stay. 5am knock was so you'd have time to pack and be out before the day people need that parking lot, and so he didn't have to write up a report letting the next shift know that you were there.

Pretty sure someone reported your vehicle. I live in MD. While the beach areas look desolate this time of the year, lots of people have cameras on their property and monitor the cameras 24/7 from afar. The police generally won't get involved unless someone reported you. Then, they are required to respond. I have a neighbor who reports suspicious vehicles all of the time. Not the friendliest area, but at least you didn't get a ticket.

You never know what led to that cop stopping to move you along. There was one parking lot at a big grocery store in my town left where people could sleep overnight. This fall more people started parking there. It became a huge mess. It took awhile but finally they made a hard and fast rule. Now nobody can park there. A few inconsiderate jerks ruined it for everyone.

Difference is, he knew she was not just pulled over to sleep, she had been there quite sometime before nightfall and had been out and about. He absolutely let her sleep there even though getting her up at 5am seems awful. Now, if you were driving and pulled over to sleep, you would be contacted but if you explained you had been driving and found no place to sleep and were no longer safe on the road, they would let you pass with recommendations on where you could go to to finish the nap. Hear about those stops all the time.

Churches used to be happy to have people sleep in their parking lot overnight but, like everywhere else, the wrong people started abusing the privilege: leaving bags of garbage (sometimes strewn around the parking area by wild animals), bottles of urine, piles of feces, etc. So now even the churches are saying, “no way!” We have to keep educating new nomads on proper etiquette, and calling-out those who misbehave. If we don’t, the police have to. And they aren’t any happier about having to do that than we are.

I think of most of the East Coast being pretty developed and inhospitable for campers. The California coast National Forests have become a little more strict as well. I live in Oakland California and in my trips around the West I've noticed more and more trash and lots of impromptu camping in questionable spots. It feels like there were more careful and respectful campers 20-30 years ago who cleaned up after themselves. I think all of us are therefore feeling the pinch of more regulations ...

I can totally relate. Last month I travel to Houston Texas, first two night’s I had stayed at a large Buc-ees And had no problems. Closer to my destinations which was downtown Houston the third night I again went into a Buckys and said hey I’m really tired I don’t want to sleep downtown Houston can I get a few hours sleep in your parking lot. The girl said she would let her manager know. 1:30 in the morning the night manager apparently didn’t care that I had permission and told me to get out. I said to her but ma’am I got permission I am in a wheelchair and I’m very tired and I can’t see to drive at night. She said you have to go they should not have given you permission to stay here! So risking an accident I went down into Center Houston and found a Denny’s to get a few more hours sleep. I am quiet, I always shop where I sleep and I never leave a mess and I always ask permission!😢 🤬 I am not full-time yet but I travel for suicide awareness and other events.

A lot of those towns in the East on the coastal areas are very strict about everything. Unfortunately, a lot of these unfair laws are in place because so many people have previously destroyed things and left big messes everywhere. Kind of like why Walmart doesn’t always allow campers and why a lot of BLM land closed boon-docking areas. A few ruin everything for the rest of us ALWAYS! They should have left you stay at least till later like you said. Not a very friendly place for sure.

I decided to take a 3 day vacation and ask my sister if she would like to come with me. She checked with her hubby, he didn't think it was a good idea. She had never been on a vacation without him and the children. She thought about it and said I'm going with my sister. We lived in N.J. 5 hr. trip to Bethany Beach, she loved it. We then drove to Ocean City MD. They were having an oldies car show. It was packed but, had lots of fun. She really enjoyed her little escape and tried to convince her husband to move there. That was a big NO! She has never gone again . So glad I took her. Her husband of 53 yrs. passed 3 yrs. ago. Can barely get her to leave home now that she could go anywhere she wants. Some laws are so dumb, times have changed. They need to update for today's world. 😊💃

East of the Mississippi River is another world. I hate it. Kentucky and many other eastern states tickets semi trucks for parking on interstate "get on" ramps. Massachusetts will charge vehicular manslaughter if you break down in their "break down" lanes and someone hits you. Solitude seekers, state out West for your own sanity. They're just too nuts "back East". Folks, Carolyn plans exceptionally well. Sometimes that fails despite her best efforts. I don't care about the police rational. It's far more dangerous to the public to drive exhausted. Rarely would any RV'er take up permanent residence in any place like that. California, down by Oxnard has pull offs on US-101. But they charge for them. A semi with a 53 foot trailer gets charged for two spots. It's crazy. Truckers have a mandatory 30 minute break during their 11 hour shift. I've been forced to move even though it creates a log book violation. If any trucker reads this here's the antidote. Log off the hours of service device. Then drive to a "safe haven". Document the reason. RV'ers don't have that escape. There's no such thing as a "safe haven" even tho those laws too are in the books. I hope Carolyn shakes off the intrusion. Folks, it's nerve wracking because it's always so unexpected. We all do our best to abide by the laws wherever we are. Yet we are constantly labeled criminals. Even in a commercial vehicle. We're necessary until we have to stop or get sick. Then like railroad workers we become vagrants. In the end it's about money, control, and how miserable they can make us with overpricedly gouged rent and mortgages where the principle is tripled by the interest rate. Being debt free should be celebrated not targeted. I propose we get radical. Boycott places unfriendly to visitors regardless their mode of transportation. Only money talks. And certainly when money becomes silent it talks the loudest.

Just watching this video now and had to comment. This happened to me in Bethany Beach at an IOverlander spot which to this day has good reviews. Well when I stayed there a couple years ago it was a different story. I got there around 5pm to get a feel for the spot, walked my dog, made dinner around 9 and went to sleep around 11. Got the knock around 1am. Three cops and their cars all surrounding my van 🚑. Questioned me for twenty minutes. Checked my drivers license and made me move to a Days Inn lot down the road a couple miles. I was sleepy, cold, and too groggy to have been driving at that point. I’ve been on the road since 2017 and to this day this has been the most negative experience I’ve had out there getting the knock. I’ll never forget it. Didn’t feel protected by them. Felt anger, resentment, and confusion as to why I couldnt stay till sunrise.

The East coast is not RV friendly in all aspects of the industry. It's difficult finding a free campsite let's alone an overnight in a parking lot. Getting repairs or even a mobile mechanic is almost nonexistent. I want to say it's because RVing is a seasonal thing and it's not common to see a rig or car camper in the fall or winter. Definitely those laws were to deter the homeless taking up residence. It's like nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem.

When I traveled across the country last year, I troubled from Florida to California and back, over 3 months. I stopped at a lot of rest stops, and for the most part most of them said no camping, and no overnight parking. But they also said that you can stay for 8 or 10 hours. I think the idea at a lot of the rest areas, is that they don't want anybody actually making Camp while they're there. They also realize that, the people are tired, and need to rest to be able to drive safely. I slept in my minivan several rest stops, even when I didn't get any window coverings cut out yet. Nobody ever bothered me, even when it was bright and people could see me sleeping in there. I finally got that dealt with, but I never had an issue.

Well a few years ago I had an apt rental at Ocean City Maryland. I went up toward Bethany beach to do some shopping and I did not stay they appeared very uppity to me, and made me feel unwelcome. Very monied there. Watch out for Ocean City, they are very adamant about parking if you are visiting, I gathered when I stayed there they dont like street people. Even though I was vacationing and staying in a hotel they were not very welcoming. I will never spend my money there again. For a resort town they are very cold and unwelcoming. Even the hotel I stayed in pulled a fast one on me and gave me a filthy and different room from the one I was supposed to get. Very nasty people all along there. I am an older lady that was on my first real vacation. All I wanted to do was see the ocean before I die. Dont waste your time there they really dont like their visitors summer or winter. I heard quite a few people making fun of all the visitors. Shame on them. I spent four months there and reallly got an eyefull. They do not respect people that come there unless you are monied or part of the clicks there. God Bless Caroline. Merry Christmas.

Life on the road is a lot of planning, isn’t it? When I was traveling, most days I liked to schedule out the entire trip, but it didn’t always end up that way…lol…and I think that my Dad taught me that, as he would print out an itinerary for everyone, for a simple family trip, all business like and such, and I would roll my eyes and think, “How controlling, Dad…lol”, but now, I see it as essential to staying on schedule and keeping the plans in motion, especially if you’re rolling with others, who are kids or teenagers…lol….Seems like that cop probably let you sleep, and got you out of there before another saw it differently, since he could have ticketed you, but he didn’t…..you handled it well, Sis, despite the lack of sleep that you paid with, anyway. Living by example is so hard, especially if one is blindsided and tired along the way. We just keep on rolling, rolling like a river, now don’t we? Stay safe out there, Carolyn. ✌️

I would hate the knock too, but at least he didn’t do in the middle of the night. I do hear what you are saying regarding the various laws. But mixing in to the conversation about unhoused people, meaning those who do not have the option for a nice RV, is another topic. Unless voters choose to support programs and resources for those who are unhoused there will be the ongoing issue with people illegally camping/sleeping/living in parking lots and on the streets. These are tough times and proper support for those who are unhoused is necessary.

I'm with u Carolyn, free & roaming. Great question, WHY? I ask who does this law benefit? I think there is no sleeping in ur vehicle law is because, if more people r permitted to sleep in vehicles, there will be less property tax collected. Some of us decided we don't want to participate with-in the norm thus we get picked on, harassed but we still pay towards tax buy shopping, gas & so on. By paying that very tax, we pay for that cop's salary, didn't we? And yes, why wait until 1 or 5 AM to kick someone out? It's harassment, a power trip. 😖

Carolyn, when I was growing up in Los Angeles, CA there was no homelessness. After 10 p.m. curfew was enforced and if you were walking down the street, a cop would ask you how much money you had and if you had over $10 you would not be arrested. Over 50 years later times have changed and many homeless people. The east coast is not RV friendly. Happy Holidays!

Most likely someone called it in. I live close to the beach in a residential area, more nights then not a sleeper or 5(all kinds of sleeper’s) are parked to boondock. It’s against the regulations here too but unless someone reports the Police won’t do anything. Most sleepers get incredibly pissed ,if me as a person living in a house, has anything negative to say about the fact it’s not a campsite, not appropriate at all to think it’s ok to sleep in front of someone’s house and we have plenty of campsites. The small beach town doesn’t have sleeper’s because they stay on it. I’m glad you had a good time there. Looked very Cool. You surely understand the reason for the “no sleeper’s “ law. I guess 5am was better than 3am, that’s the time the Police tell the sleeper’s to move on in my town. I wouldn’t compare your lifestyle or the way you look for place’s to sleep to the “neighbors “ in my area. Most have very expensive rigs and they want to nomad in a neighborhood where they feel save. Instead of the parking lots where it can be more dangerous. Some of these folks have lived in the neighborhood for years, with out of state plates.

Me and my partner went to a Ren faire not long ago. It was a in the moment thing so we couldn't plan a rv camp sight. We called and they where all booked. We are to a nature preserve close by and they had a hunt going on but told use we could park in the boat ramp parking. Well my partner mis understood and parked in the wrong place and a off duty cop came up and told use it was private property. That was alright we left. It was late and he told us to go to a camp sight. We called the lady and we got the right parking . We was still hooked and the same cop came by on duty and got an attitude saying he told us to go to a camp ground and that we needed to leave because we couldn't camp there. We where parked and there where no signs saying we couldn't have over night parking. We where in the nature preserve and was told by the manager of the place we could stay. He didn't ticket us and we left. But it felt like we was targeted. We have a nobo pull behind.

Maryland is not a friendly state. At one dock, even though I was a customer and it was off season, they wouldn't let me stay to walk up to town. At another dock, I "made an enemy" of the marina, when I motored in during the night to a closed pump-out dock, to call 911 to get to a hospital. Maryland, is just not friendly, and the DNR (their water cops), are worse than state troopers, in their hurry to write you a ticket, force you to journey back to their state to go to court (it's called a "must appear" ticket, for which they will issue a Bench Warrant, if you don't show up. You can't just pay a fine), and just try to make your stay miserable. In a National Forest free campground, where I was the only camper their, the Department of Agriculture wrote me a ticket for improper registration, because their computer said my van came back as a Toyota, even though I showed him my valid registration. Some cops are just sh*tty ( I stopped here, not sure if I wanted to grant them the status of people, Human Beings, or something much lower. Let them try to live on $800/month disability.

I think the problem exists first, then the law is created to address the problem, and there are always unintended consequences due to having to write a law that eliminates potential loopholes. If only some people weren't such inconsiderate assholes. Noise pollution, litter, obnoxious behavior, then we wouldn't have all these nuisance laws. Some people have to push the limit of the law or decency. Laws like no sleeping in cars likely are intended to address the assholes among us, but we all have to abide by them even if we aren't a part of the problem. Guaranteed those laws were pushed by the businesses and residents who need that parking.

They want you in that campground (or a hotel) so you'll be spending that $$$$ and stimulating the local economy. I'd bet if you'd driven 20 - 30 miles inland and stayed at the end of the parking lot at one of those big Royal Farms or Wawa type gas stations, or found a semi-residential street in one of the small towns to park on, you'd have been fine.

I didn't see the harm with spending the night, either. It's difficult these days to find Walmarts that allow you to park for a night too. Some say, local RV parks are complaining and want the added revenue from people in rvs forced into their parks. If Walmart would allow the option for one free night after a purchase of, maybe, $35 dollars worth of groceries/merchandise with a pre-registration using their online Walmart app so they know who you are and that your not there to setup camp and live out of their parkinglot would, really help the traveling fulltime RVers that just need a place to overnight while traveling. Walmart would benefit from added customers buying their stuff. Because, right now, RVers that overnight in the Walmarts that STILL allow overnight parking aren't required to buy anything from their stores.
