The Cornish Knitter -saved WIPs, body confidence, community building, and knickers.
Hello, I am Jane from Falmouth in Cornwall, UK. I am an avid knitter and owner of Stitches and Cream, a yarn shop specialising in natural fibres and British yarns.
www.stitchesandcream.co.uk/
It's been a while since we last spoke! Allow me to update you on the progress of my WIPs (Work in Progress) after taking into account all the great advice you gave me on my previous video. I'll also be talking about my latest knitting and crochet projects.
I share my thoughts on ageing and ponder on why we let other people's opinions affect how we feel. And I'll tell you one of my most embarrassing stories, which involves Spanx.
Finally, I'll reveal what I've been working on in the background - creating a more inclusive and engaging online community that everyone can participate in. The Cornish Knitters Flock is almost here, and I hope you'll join me in creating and shaping a global community of knitters and yarn enthusiasts.
Thank you for watching, and please like, subscribe, share with friends, and of course, comment! I will try to respond to as many as I can.
Find me on IG: @stitchesandcreamfalmouth
The Cornish Knitter Flock launches on 22nd May - registration is open for 10 days until 31st May 2024 www.stitchesandcream.co.uk/th...

Your comments about body confidence struck a chord. I’m 60 next year and have felt that I’m becoming more invisible over the past few years. I’m not ready to be old, still feel 17 inside. You are a strong woman, Jane, dress for you and wear what makes your heart sing

Lovely to see you again Jane and i must say i totally can relate to everything you said. I am 68 and a petite lady who has always enjoyed fashion and i have a strong dress sense. I realise that now i dress much more age appropriate, but still enjoy looking nice and neat. You are right in that inside you still feel much younger. I run and keep fit and try to look after myself. I lost my dearly loved husband from cancer 18 months ago and am learning to live a different life. Don't let anybody upset you, it is very thoughtless of young people to comment on how people look. My daughter was born in Cornwall and we lived there for many years. I am determined to visit again and will come into your lovely yarn store. Thank you for a lovely podcast x

Be yourself. Don't let others determine your style. I have my own style and it is purely for comfort. I am in my late 60's. My blue jeans aren't frayed or ripped. I don't look look like I have been poured into too tight leggings and body rolls showing. When people point their finger at others, they need to look at the three fingers pointing back at themselves. Chin up. I can honestly say I am not judging you on appearance. I watch for the knitting and crafting content and the joy it brings to me.

We’ve all been there- us older women being shushed or invisible or pushed into a box or treated as not worth investing in. Whereas older men are usually treated with respect from the outset, we have to earn it all of our lives. It’s horrible and probably linked to how we were brought up and how we are all bombarded by youth and perfection being the yardstick everyone is measured by. Thanks for addressing this. Your knitting is beautiful and so are you!

Thank you. It was ever thus wasn’t it. It doesn’t feel like we have shifted the dial much in how women and men are treated and viewed as we get older 🙄

Im turning 60 this year, and although never bothered by age before, I find myself thinking more about this one. BUT then I tell myself that at 60, I have the blessing of watching my two children making their way in the world, having fun with my three little grands, celebrating 37 years of marriage, and wisdom that only comes with years. I'm striving to be thankful, and I hope you will, too. You're beautiful, Jane, and are giving us all so much❤!

Hi Jane I so understand how you feel. You know I notice how much older I look when I go to my hairdresser,I'm 67 .I look in the salon mirror and I feel so old and not at all what I'm feeling inside ,the two just dont marry up, if you know what I mean .The last time made me quite depressed tbh.Keep doing what you luv and take no notice of offhand remarks and I'll stop looking in mirrors ha ha .xx

Oh Jane. What a hoot your Spanx story was. I laughed so hard because I remember wearing those for my daughter’s wedding and being SO uncomfortable! I can certainly identify with ALL your comments on aging and I’m much older than you. Get ready- more is coming. By the time you reach my age you’ve completely faded into the woodwork. I find it rather amusing. I just frogged several projects that had been on long vacations around my house! It was so cathartic. I felt like I had a new lease on life. I love your podcast and always look forward to a new one. Thank you.

I'm 61 and proud! I wear lots of bright colours and knit in bright colours and wear exactly what I want (within reason). We are creatives, and therefore have our own unique styles which reflect that and if people don't see that or "get" that then that's up to them and doesn't affect me. I feel quite sorry for people who don't knit 🤣

Hi Jane, you are one of my favourite podcasters. I love your knitting content but also identify so well with your outlook on life as we age. I’m 73 but don’t feel even close to that and I remember my Mum saying the same thing. She lived to 93. It’s amazing how we brush off compliments but take a criticism so to heart and dwell on it. When I was still in my early 60’s a young clerk in a department store called me “dear”. I am 5’10” and dress smartly and I worried about it all day! I lost my lovely husband when we were 58 so I know growing older is a real privilege. I’m going to,look into your new group as it sounds perfect. Love your scenes of Cornwall as I have mentioned before. Born in Surrey, England and came to Canada when I was 14. I’ve been back but never to Cornwall. Soon, I hope. Thanks for being “you”. 💞 Margaret in Surrey, British Columbia.

It’s a pity you overheard the comments as it’s hard not to listen, but we can’t change other people’s opinions. You always seem to make lovely choices of your clothes and colours too that suit you. In reference to your age comments, I think young people have become to making anonymous comments about others, but are now saying those thoughts aloud and have forgotten civility (if they ever possessed it). Their own insecurity and focus on appearances has been amplified by social media. They think it's important. I look back and remember spending way too much time making sure that my shoes and accessories went together, and my clothing was just so. I can honestly say that at 69 I no longer care about self-appointed "influencers". I don't understand why anybody cares what some 20-year-old thinks is the latest great thing. I rarely look in a mirror, unless I'm getting something out of my eye. It does no good to focus on being self-critical. It is much more important to enjoy this phase of my life, despite being a 24-7 caregiver to my disabled spouse. Knitting is my escape, and I enjoy the creative outlet.

Thank you Jane for a lovely podcast. Regarding your train trip. I imagine because you wore something bright you were noticed and some people don’t like it as they probably don’t like to stand out as they don’t have the confidence themselves. The fact you were the topic of conversation shows you weren’t invisible which is a good thing, so continue to wear bright clothes with confidence. Hello!! I had to stop the video to comment on what you were saying about people making you feel bad , of course we are affected by cruel comments or negative comments, but I have learned to value myself no matter what, we all have to keep reinventing ourselves ! I’m 71, I love my family and my hobbies, but I’m a bit of a recluse by choice cause when I was in a very difficult time people just avoid you, they don’t want anything bad to rub off on them, there are what I call exceptional people, no malice , no bragging , no agenda, but they are rare, believe me, I promised a cat I had and when I put him to sleep I promised him I wouldn’t let anyone do that to me, I e make me feel unimportant, sorry for the rant, I love the yarn !!!!

I know that negative comments can upset us disproportionately - and I hope that my positive comment can go some way to counteracting the little know-it-alls on the train. Thanks for another great podcast I love it when my notifications say you’ve got a new one out. A funny story I have happened a few year ago when a young mam with two small children was trying to persuade her children to give up their seat on the bus for me. The oldest one was happy to do that but the younger girl didn’t want to. Anyway the older one started saying to her sister that she had to get up for very very old people because they will die soon, haha, I’m 70 next month but inside don’t feel it. I met a woman I know recently who is in her mid eighties and I commented on how lovely her coat was and how she suited the colour. I seen her again the next day and she said she hadn’t stopped thinking about my compliment to her and how it made her day. It just shows how one comment can drag your mood down when another can do wonders for your day. Anyway I’m rabbiting on, will go and check out your community post. Loved the St Michaels mount video. Take care and see you soon x

Hi Jane, love to watch your podcast and love all your knits as I have knit quite a few of the same. As for the very rude younger people on your train journey let's hope no one makes disparaging comments about them. Getting older is a privilege not a given. I had breast cancer 12 years ago and that definitely makes you realise what's important and what's not and their comments are definitely not important. I'm 59 next birthday and I'm loving being older far more than when I was in my 20's/30's, mind you that might be because our first grandchildren was born 5 weeks ago. Hi Jane, I would have spoken to these people and asked them “if they were talking about me”. I was just thinking how good you looked and then you told us this story. You wear what you like and what makes you feel good. Does not matter what anyone else thinks. It’s all about what you feel. ( whoever you are). As for the knickers - look at the M&S high leg, high waist lace & silk knickers. £12 a pair but fabulous and worth every penny. Just bought a red pair to match all the others I have. Great vlog so thank you. Go and walk tall now and know you nail it ⭐️👏

Jane you are gorgeous, inside and out! As I’ve got older I’ve become comfortable in my skin and really don’t care what anyone thinks about me - that’s their stuff, not mine. No-one is entitled to judge another - although we all do it (but not necessarily out loud!) Young people naturally tend to have a rather limited perspective on life whereas older people can be critical of the young - that’s how it goes! BUT it’s our choice how we respond emotionally and whether or not we let other people’s comments affect us. Rejoice and be happy with who you are - you are unique - and special to so many people, family, friends and your on-line community and we love you for who you are. Enjoyed the podcast and the trip to St Michael’s Mount. Love & gratitude, Linda x💕🧶🧦🐑💕

Thank you another wonderful episode! A few years ago when I was in my late 20’s I lived in a house, my housemate commented on what I was wearing (was about to go out) and how maybe I should reconsider it as the clothes were a bit “young” for me (I’m sure she was well meaning). I replied that I didn’t appreciate her comment and I would wear what I wanted, and she never commented again 😊 I also get your thoughts about people’s stereotypes about knitters; a couple of years when I told some people in my family that I had started to knit, I was asked “but isn’t knitting just for old ladies” (I’m currently 32 years old). I was shocked how some people can be so ageist and sexist! I love your focus on inclusivity and building a community and I can’t wait to join The Cornish Knitter’s Flock 🥰 I’ve got a few knitting friends where I live, but I’m looking forward to connecting with even more people and get inspired and just be a part of a wonderful community.

Such a lovely episode Jane. Your story about the interview and the Spanks being found in your handbag was just so funny, and so easy to imagine and sympathise with your embarrassment! A lot of what you said about the age thing resonated with me - I am older than you but feel exactly the same way. I love to knit the latest designs by women far younger than me, and I know I'm not going to look anywhere near as good as they do, but it gives me a lift to wear something I've made myself, in beautiful yarn, that is just that little bit different. We must learn not to take other people's comments to heart, hard though that may be. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk across to St Michael's Mount with you!

I used to be so bad at worrying what others think and trying to avoid drawing attention to myself. Spent a lot of my childhood/teen years being bullied at school etc. and consequently went out of my way to avoid bright colours and only wear baggy clothes etc. Looking back now, obviously I would have just stuck out like a sore thumb 😅. Finally at a point where I can just be me and ignore other people's opinions and it's so freeing. I still find it upsetting that some people decide to express their opinions about how others look, and I feel a bubble of anger on your behalf hearing this as I know how it can impact someone's confidence. I've finally realised, we can't please everyone so I'm just gonna do what I can to please myself and just be myself. Just remember, you are a wonderful, fabulous person and just be you ❤

Unfortunately there are some unkind people (and not just youngsters) who think they have the right to criticise others. I would have been affected by the comments too as I've never had much self confidence and do take others opinions to heart. However as I get older (I will be 66 next Sunday) I am trying to be less sensitive. I do wear what I like and what makes me feel good which includes colourful garments. That is progress as for years I would only wear black as I didn't want to be noticed. If I ever get to Cornwall again I will pop into the store to see you. I always look forward to, and enjoy watching your podcasts.

As a person of 66 I si agree with you about how we feel! Isn't it hard not to be effected by the thoughts about how we look, isn't it? It's like when a nasty customer walks into your shop, it can have a major bearing on your day! Never mind about someone offering you a seat! I have never minded about that, they are just being courteous! I have chosen to retire this month after a long working life and I am dreading it because I am on my own now after my husband died very suddenly 2 years ago so not how our retirement was planned for sure. Getting better at not caring what other people think but not easy after a lifetime of worrying. I totally get what you say about being a knitter, none of my friends are knitters or my family and even my sister made a comment the other day ‘I’m not ready to sit and knit yet’ I let it go, as unless you are a knitter/crafter I don’t think you get it do you. Hi Joanne you are a beautiful woman inside and out. I had the pleasure of meeting you, albeit briefly, when we came to Polzeath, Cornwall for our holiday - we came over to Falmouth specially to visit your yarn shop after seeing you on KZfaq. Pease do not pay any attention to people's unkind opinions - worth noting that in some - in fact most - no ALL situations where poeple make unkind remarks about others is really because they are not happy WITHIN and WITH themselves. Not nice to be at the receiving end believe me I know, but please don't let it affect you - you have this choice even if they chose to be unkind. Unfortunately the world is full of ugly stuff but thank God we have the beautiful gift of loving all things knitting as an antidote to it all. You keep going and doing what you do (and wearing what you want - your knits are beautiful!) BTW getting older is I a gift too - Those younger people hopefully will get to experience it!

It was lovely to see you pop up on my KZfaq feed Jane, always enjoy your podcast, had a chuckle about the Spanks! Not sure I would have been Impressed of overhearing someone on the Tube commenting on my dress, I’ve been on the London tube many times in the colder months and everyone wears Black!! I’m sure I would have given them the Death Stare at least! I’m turning 69 this month and I Certainly don’t feel my age, whatever that is? I dress to what make me feels comfortable,if I see a garment I like I buy it I don’t think wether it’s age appropriate, to an extent. Twin set and pearls are no longer a thing, well not here in Australia, I have sewing friends that are in there 80’s who dress more modern than myself! So I say dress what makes you feel good and try not to take it too personally, if that happens again give them the Dirty Look! 😂 Love the idea of the Flock Club I will check it out… I’ve started crocheting small Hexies for a blanket using scrap yarn, I follow Sandra from Cherry Heart designs.. always love the out and about walks at the end. I watched your podcast earlier today and I keep thinking about your experience while traveling. Unfortunately, maybe 🤔 with social media, people are forgetting that we’re all humans and have feelings. I cannot understand why people think it is okay to write unkind comments and in your experience actually voice unkind thoughts aloud. I’m 69 and I too notice that others see me differently now. I think it’s important that I try to stay true to my own values. I think to check my appearance before I leave the house to see if one or to changes might look a little nicer- perhaps earrings or a fresh top. I am retired so my home uniform is very casual 😀. Thanks for getting us thinking 💭!

About strangers commenting on anyone´s looks: Just ignore them. Whatever feeling of superiorty they might have today, time will take care of it. And some day, if they are lucky, someone will comment on their outfit and it will not make them feel bad for the rest of the day. I am 62, and about two years ago decided that I was never ever going to wear uncomfortable clothes again. Since then I have been getting confused looks, hideous comments and praise - all for the very same, self-made skirt and blouse outfit. People are funny. So, let them talk. YOU need to feel good. It´s your life, your body, your happiness. I love my very comfortable dresses, skirts, shirts, trousers und knitwear. And I am proud of what i made. And plaese, don´t even think about the tweed and pearls. That´s not you. Maybe one day it will be and you will wear it with as much grace and confidence as you are now wearing the Ranunculus. Thank you for this wonderful, honest video and the lovely trip I so do envy you for living in Cornwall, Germany is nice too, but you really hit the jackpot. Have a great weekend, Su

Hi Jane. Your knickers episode made me laugh out loud. I had a similar experience a few years ago. I was in Rome and went to see the Vatican. As it was very hot I had put a spare pair of knickers in, just in case I was a bit sweaty and damp. I had a light backpack which had to go through a security scanner. Next thing I knew I was surrounded by Vatican guards, muttering KNIFE. Of course, my bag had to be emptied in front of all the curious tourists. I just wanted to earth to swallow me up when they pulled out my knickers (M & S big pants). My darling husband thought it was hilarious. The knife they had seen on the scanner was actually a big thick zip on my bag

I have two and quite often they talk nonsense 😂 (happily, mine are sensitive enough not to speak like that about anyone ☺️)

Thank you for a great video, again. I’ve been to your website and registered interest in the Cornish Flock, but just received an email to say you’ll be in touch. Is that correct, as I’d hate to miss out on the sign up info. Take care x

A while back someone criticized me on something, I just turn and said " really, sorry you feel like that" she turned away looking very sheepish. Here's another one for, when my daughter was young she said to me one day, Wendy, who is a girl in her class, said, I don't like you. I said to my daughter, I hope you said, well that's your fault not mine.

Well said! I think social media has allowed people to be so much more critical and judgemental too. And they can hide behind their screens so can be quite viscous. I love your advice to your daughter. I hope she did what you suggested ☺️

I don’t have that excuse. I have had to wear glasses since I was 3 🤓 even had those awful NHs glasses and an eye patch as I had a lazy eye. Oh the shame 😳

I believe that aging is a privilege and to be celebrated…..I am horrified at all the anti aging products pushed on women and the fetishisation of youth….a woman happy in her own skin is beautiful whatever age or size she is….aging is a natural process and not something to be hidden away or scorned…its just ridiculous! Wear what you love! Make what you love! you are beautiful and hold a unique place in the world! ❤

Aw thank you. I agree I am happy to age appropriately but some seem to think that once we get to a certain age we have nothing to offer. But we do! All the experience and knowledge is so valuable isn’t it! 🥰

An interesting episode. But I feel you need to rethink your feelings about people standing up for you on the train. My friends and I - who are 10 - 20 years ahead of you were just saying how grateful we are these days. If some-one stands up for you they have not only seen you but valued you enough to give up a precious seat for you!

Really good point it’s not them as I appreciate the sentiment and offer but it’s me that is surprised as I never feel old enough to need it 😜😌

Young people today wear very boring mute colours. Grey, beige. Feel the same way I look in the mirror and sometimes feel down with the increasing wrinkles. But hey, we have got there to whatever age we are. They havent. As hubby says. I have had 2 children with 4 miscarriages, a hysterectomy. Dont be ashamed of your body.

So true! Thank you for sharing and I agree I do think we should be proud of our bodies and how they reflect our experiences of life. That day I just let it get to me and I know so many women feel the same way. 🥰

I think that it is easy for young people to be critical. That 'mean girl's tendency may take longer to out grow. I am 71 and was talking to my brother about those days when I could not comprehend being this old. Funny how our perceptions change as we age and accumulate more life experiences. I know I look older than I feel but I don't care what people I don't know think. I am sorry that thoughtless girls who have no manners, made you feel badly and sabotaged your joy in the day.

Thank you. Partly I was annoyed with myself for letting it affect my day but there are times when it hits home. I am usually pretty resilient 😉☺️

What kind of group? Were they just chatting or pin pointing out what you were wearing? How rude. Embrace your age. We aren’t kids any more but have to have the self confidence to be who we are……….
