In my opinion John Mayer changed the guitar scene in new generation by not just shred the guitar till your fingers bleed but to groove until your neck sore and have joint replaced.

Great job, Ross! This is going to bring so many new viewers to your channel. I play this song with 4 fingers for picking, could never figure out how John played with only two, but you did the magic and explained it perfectly! Thank you man. Also, for people playing this for the first time, it might take you a couple of weeks to get it right, don't give up, it's worth it once it gets stuck into your brain. This video is really good, the way he explains it is what so many videos don’t, but it’s incorrect, he plays notes that the bass actually plays, which is fine it’s probably even better if u play them urself, and he is missing a beat on the “tapping mutted notes” or whatever u wanna call it, but it’s defiantly a great video to actually understand what is happening to create the sound. And the 16tg triplet or whatever is played with just ur thumb n index, just wrack ur thumb down over the notes n muted string and then up pick the remain notes with an up wrack with the index.

Great lesson - really appreciated how you slowed it down. The key to this song is the rhythm with the picking hand. Slapping the picking hand on the strings in a cadence is key. The alternate thumb picking from the C to G string is unorthodox (per the standard finger picking style), but is another example of the rhythm needed to play this correctly. I've seen multiple tabs out there that are incorrect.

You get an upvote from me, but I'd like to offer one suggestion: Mayer's magic is usually in how he uses his right hand, but I think for this particular riff, showing the left hand fingering would really help since the riff is deceptively simple as it flows fairly quickly. I think the first positioning (around the 3 min mark) could especially use some clarification since there are those muted notes in between the sixth, third, and second strings. Either way, thanks for posting- I never really paid attention to the alternating thumb/index finger pattern until I saw this.

Yeah it's easier but there's something that makes it sound different and when played like john does with thumb and index just makes the song groove. I used to play using four fingers and learned it pretty quickly but then I decided to learn the song like it was meant to be played and it was so much fun to learn the technique even though it felt like I had never held the guitar before because it was so different I was used to. Try it out, it's hard but the payoff is great!

But I think it’s important to find what style we like the most and not be worried about playing songs that are out of our comfort zone (to me it’s SOOOO HARD) lol I honestly do not like fingerstyle picking (idek why I'm trying) that much but I want to learn it Just cause everyone’s trying to but I think I won’t force myself to learn it just because everyone’s doing it. What’s important is passion, I think. I have to tell myself that! lol because all these years I’ve done it because someone’s done it or because I want to show it to everyone that “hey look I can play this, I can sing this” I’ve never truly given that many fucks about just music or something I truly like. Always did it because it's either popular or something lol But if you're passionate about learning a certain style then I think you shouldn't give up yet! Give yourself some time and take it easy! :] you'll get there 🤍

I've spent the last 2 weeks getting it to full speed. What worked for me was getting the chord changes really fluid, then REALLY focus on feeling the groove in the right hand. Feel the way the bass notes move around as the riff progresses. This is one of those riffs that I think slow tempo progression can help, but as he says it is sorta odd to play slow once you have it down. I listened to the song a lot to really get a sense of the rhythm, once little thing that helped was swinging it a little too, then go back to playing it straight like John does.

I actually learned this song from you, thanks for teaching me! But I don't think JM finger picks the last bit of the riff with the 4 fingers, knowing his style of playing. I think it's more like thumb slap, index, thumb rack (playing two arpeggiated notes with your thumbs), index pluck.
