LOVE this. Sadly folk groups like the Corries and the Dubliners are a thing of the past. And that is something to be greatly regretted. A song that is both a music and a history lesson. Great stuff..

General Hugh McKay (1640-1692) was commander-in-chief of the Williamite (Government) forces in Scotland. They were also known as the Covenanters, and they marched against the Jacobites. His forces largely came from the Scottish Lowlands but also included professional Highland soldiers who fought against their close relatives. Williamite means William III of Orange

The song is about a battle during the late 17th century civil war in Scotland. Dundee, He was known to his supporters as Bonnie Dundee. His support came from the Catholic Highland Clans (mostly from Clans Cameron, Donald, Stuart and McLean) , and his army were known as the Jacobites. Coming from Inverness over the Corrieyairack and Drumochter Passes,

I'm English and I think Scottish music is fabulous, also the Scottish fighting spirit, but one thing worries me: is enough being done to keep alive Scottish culture? How about Gaelic? Why is nobody making comments in gaelic here? Seriously, you lose such a lot by losing a language. If the Israelis could revive hebrew, then surely the Scotts (and Welsh) can do the same for their languages.

Someone commented here a few years ago, and I believe correctly, that this video is from 1987, not 1975!!! I never saw the Corries live but look at the youtube videos from the 21st anniversary show in 1981 and it seems clear.

@superstratboy The man you wanted to follow, was Bill Millin, the last Scottish Piper to lead troops into battle, a true hero, who marched in front of the troops playing and unarmed. It is true that the Bagpipes can inspire Scottish troops to greater endeavours; why else would the English hang a a Piper after the '45 for using an "instrument of war"? And why were Scottish troops called "The Ladies from Hell" in WWI by the Germans?
@tearlach4515 жыл бұрын
In short. Its about a Jacobite victory over the British army. The Jacobites wanted to the Catholic monarchy of Scotland to rule the British throne. The British army wanted the Protestant English monarchy to rule the British throne. Both sides had followers from Scotland, England and Ireland. It was almost like a civil war.

there was no jacobites until the english lords got rid of James 7th ( 2nd of england) to replace him by the dutch king william. It was not the jacobites wanting the catholics to rule, it was the english protestants not wanting the catholics or rome to rule Britain. All british folk should have been jacobites, no foreign person should have took the crown. And then there was king George the german that could not even speak english. Jacobites also from Spain and France.

@ac130ugunship Aye, we did - but for naught. Tribal peoples cannot win against the organized armies of feudal states. If we'd learned the lesson Vercingetorix tried to teach at Alesia, we'd have beaten the Romans. But the clans never did learn to put their differences aside and unite.
