I read the book and watched several adaptations. The Soviet adaptation with Viktor Avilov as the cunt is the best adaptation. And I say that the film with Jim Caviziel is a ridiculous film. Albert being the Count's son and suddenly becoming father and son. Even if he was his biological son, Albert was much more likely to become the Count's enemy than Brutus was to Julius Caesar, despite everything Caesar did for him.

The 2002 version is a typical bad American movie. This film will be as bad as the terrible 2002 adaptation. That alliance scene is stupid. Do you think Mercedes presenting the ring to Edmond would have the same effect as Cleopatra, a young princess who was cultured, having to appear rolled up in a carpet to Julius Caesar? The count was a rich and powerful man, he would have a young lover just like Julius Caesar had Cleopatra. And the duels. How stupid. The trap that Edmond set for Dnglars and Fernand would never work, it would be more likely that he would go after him like Marcus Antonius after Julius Caesar's assassins. And they wouldn't be individual duels, there were possibly other people involved as well when Mark Antony went after Cassius and Brutus. That fanfic written by the stupid Jay Wolpert would never be the best adaptation of the book. The film only shows the low repertoire of the American screenwriters.

The one with Jim Caviezel was flawless.. this is like when they ruined Robin Hood with that newer Russel Crowe abomination. Why... why do they do it.
@dclark142002
@dclark142002 6 күн бұрын
If you thought the Caviezel movie was flawless, you really need to read the book. The story is an order of magnitude more awesome and epic than even that great movie. It really needs a whole TV miniseries to be portrayed well. The four villains (jealous colleague, drunkard friend of the family, jilted ex-boyfriend, and corrupt prosecutor) do more than just ruin Dantes life. They continue to be villains during all the time Dantes is in the Chateau D'If. When Dantes returns as the mysterious Count of Monte Cristo...he is on a mission to reward those who did good, restore those who had been victimized by the villains, and punish the guilty. The story arcs of Benedetto, Haidee, Albert, Eugenie and Louise, Valentine, Heloise, Maximilien, etc. etc. are astonishing in and of themselves...and their stories of evil or victimization and the interaction with Dantes revenge is tight and excellently paced. The revelations are epic and the evils done actually outstrip those done to Dantes. The first evil is basically just an hors d'oeuvres compared to what has been done to others. Plus, the overarching theme (what to do when evil is done to you) is really well fleshed out. You start the novel horrified at Dantes naivety and the ruthlessness of his 'friends'...by the time he escapes and finds out how deep the villainy has gone, you are all in on the 'revenge is good, everyone must pay' mentality. But by chapter 89 or so, you start to become sick and horrified yourself at just how far Dantes will go with his revenge. By the end, Dantes will pass through further stages of response on his path to finding a healthy place...both for himself, and the rest of the characters in the novel. I really, REALLY recommend reading the whole book.

The film with Jim Caviziel is the typical bad American film. American cinema is repelled by low-level and intellectual screenwriters. And this file seems to want to compete with the terrible film with Jim Caviziel to see which is the worst adaptation of the book. The lack of reading of classics and history among American writers leads them to write low-quality stories. Meidocre Jay Wolpert's stupid idea of introducing duels into the story. When Mark Antony went to avenge Julius Caesar's death, he did not duel with Julius Caesar's killers, just as Julius Caesar did not duel with the pirates who kidnapped him when he sought revenge. Only in stupid films like the weak Gladiator have duels. In the relative story of Gladiator, Emperor Commodus did not die in a duel. And what nonsense making a rich and powerful man like Edmond go back to his ex-fiancée. When in real life he would have a young and beautiful lover like Julius Caesar had Cleopatra. The film with Jim Caviziel is so bad that it shows the low level of quality of American screenwriters who write rubbish like Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy.

The original is the book and its first film adaptation was in 1908. And before the 2002 adaptation existed, France made the adaptations in 1918, 1929, 1943, 1954, 1961, 1979 and 1998. There are 7 adaptations before the 2002 adaptation existed. The 2002 adaptation was unnecessary after the 1998 adaptation. The count is not called Zatara in novel. The book is influenced by Arabian Nights and he loved the name Sinbad, the sailor.

@@roman1183 I know the history. Dumas also wrote 3 Musketeers. Read both unabridged versions. However Jim & Guy killed it. By far the best. I’ve seen many versions. I’m not in the minority….it was simply amazing, let’s not forget Henry & Harris. Comments speak to how well directed(Reynolds) and the storytelling was spot on!

The 2002 film starring Jim Caviezel is the worst adaptation of the book. The American screenwriters are illiterate and cannot read. The best adaptation is the 1988 Russian film starring Viktor Avilov. The Russian screenwriters at least read the book and made an adaptation worthy of that masterpiece. To work in American cinema, it must be a prerequisite to be illiterate and never read books.

This was a movie that I truly loved and for you all to put language in French, and I also saw two of The Count of Monte Cristo. With first Jim Caviezel and Richard Chamberlain. I love them both, but the one with Jim was my favorite. I think I saw like 10 times. But this new one they have coming out this summer, I don't think I will want due to the fact that it's in French with English sub titles, and for trying to read the sub titles, I can't really enjoy the movie, because the sub titles flash by too quickly. So, nah, I will not be seeing this version until they have the language in English.

There will still be a miniseries with Sam Claflin in lnguage english Dumas inspired by the story of Caesar and Cleopatra, he wrote that Dantes falls in love with an Eastern princess who is younger than him. Just like Caesar despite being married, he has a romance with Cleopatra, Edmond, despite his former engagement with Mercedes, he supposedly has a romance with his beautiful princess from the East.
