What is it that sets high performing leaders apart? The courage to give ourselves and others the permission to be vulnerable is a key foundation of effective leadership, however it is often overlooked and even dismissed as a sign of weakness. James Heale explores how vulnerable leaders shape their organisational culture and climate, promoting collaboration and inviting check and challenge. Despite suffering impostor syndrome, self-doubt and not a superhero cape in sight, they are mere mortals and do a great job anyway! James Heale is the founder of Flywheel Learning, an organisation which supports school leaders, schools and Trusts through leadership coaching, professional development and whole-school improvement work to help them unleash their full potential. He writes blogs to challenge thinking about leadership.
As Headteacher of Vyners School and Executive Headteacher of the Vanguard Learning Trust in West London from 2012-2018, James oversaw a significant improvement in outcomes, Ofsted judgement and culture.
James is Head of Secondary Education for Tower Hamlets Education Partnership in East London, serving one of London’s most diverse boroughs. He is the PiXL Regional Leader for North London and South-East England, leads their Character strategy and has developed a number of programmes for the School of PiXL Leadership.
