Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZfaq, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZfaq. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZfaq, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

Shawn, ‘Hair’ was not just a celebration of hair, but in the years since has become a celebration of the spirit of '60s in general. It is just a joyous feel good uplifting remembrance of that era and in particular, the hippie generation. But it does have its dark moments. The play still tours the country on occasion, it was in Chicago about 10 years ago, my brother went to see it and had a wonderful time. Oh and there's one more thing that makes this play stand out. During the finale the entire cast appears fully nude on stage during the singing of “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In”. It was the first Broadway musical ever to feature full nudity, and also the first to feature a same-sex kiss. So you can just imagine the buzz and impact this had as the '60s turned into the 70s. It is an iconic groundbreaking piece of musical theater. And a lot of that spirit comes across in this wonderful song.

This was great. I was in kindergarten when this came out, the group is categorized as bubble gum, but I can see how just by hearing this song, you wouldn’t pick up on it. The Rain The Park And Other Things is my favorite of theirs.

The Cowsills are an amazingly talented family. The surviving members still perform. Lead singer Bill Cowsill died after years of illness, and bassist Barry Cowsill drowned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The whole Hair soundtrack is pretty brilliant. Around the same time two other songs from the play were released as covers: Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine in by the 5th Dimension and Easy to Be Hard by Three Dog Night. All of these would be great songs to react to.

The Cowsill family were immensely talented. Beautiful voices, arrangements and harmonies. They inspired the TV show "The Partridge Family". There's a great Ed Sullivan show appearance where they do a medley where you get to hear each member sing parts of different songs on their own (including the Mom!) It's listed on youtube as "A Cowsills Medley: 1967)

There were quite a few songs from the play "Hair" that became popular hits on the charts. Another hit from "Hair' was "Easy to be hard" by the Three Dog Night. Originally it was sung by Jennifer Warnes who was in the play "Hair", I have her album that has "Easy to be hard" on it, I like her version the best because she was the one that sang it in the play "Hair", though Three Dog Night' does a pretty good version of it, Jennifer put a lot more heart into it but it got no air play at all.

The Cowsills still tour and they are awesome their harmonization sends chills down my spine every time John until recently was the drummer for the Beach Boys.All of them play various instruments. Check out some live versions from Ed Sullivan show

The performances were usually live, however, the artists usually weren't singing/playing live. The producers wanted to maintain as much control as possible as well as making sure no one did any potentially problematic lyrics

Television was full of variety (musical- comedy) shows back then. Some live, most were live on tape. While color started filtering toward the mid-late 60s, most people couldn't afford a color set. My first color set was around 1974. It was all of 17 inches, and life changing. Watching "The Mod Squad" in living color was a whole new experience . LOL

The three major TV broadcasters -- ABC, CBS and NBC -- transitioned to color in late 1965 for that new TV seaon of 1965-1966 Many then current TV series went from black and white to color -- like "The Andy Griffith Show" and too many more to list.

Growing up in the 60s, hair was our generation’s tattoos and piercings. Definitely should check out Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In from the same musical.

This performance was in color but it was not live. As most singing done back then of this caliber, it was recorded and lip synced and filmed in the Beatles silly music video style, then played to the audience and aired as taped on TV. In the late 60s most tv shows were color. They usually were announced in the intro to the show that they were In Living Color. lol. This song was from a popular musical but these kids, all on their own adapted and performed all the instruments, mixed it themselves and sang it all themselves. The oldest was only about 20. They were musical prodigies. The ones still alive are still gifted musicians to this day. They vastly improved the song all on their own. If you listen to the original song in the musical, it’s nowhere nearly as good as the original. This group is amazing. The youngest boy in this video is the drummer for today’s Beach Boys. The Cowsills take out all the religious references. They promoted the song themselves cuz nobody could believe this strait laced musical group would do such a hippie song but made it waaaaay better. The sound track was a lot more serious. The version you saw was done specifically for a Carl Reiner comedy tv special. It was not a music video per se but more of an homage to the comedy/musical Beatles films at the time like ‘Help’ or ‘Hard Days Night’

In the 1960's and 70's long hair was a rebel act ~ for guys. Long hair was also known as a Freak Flag ~ Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, from the album Déjà Vu 1970 ~ the song, Almost Cut My Hair.

Another great reaction Shawn! The stage musical "Hair" was the first to incorporate nudity, hippies and pot-smoking into its mix of counterculture rebellion, and was embraced by both the kids and the critics. By the time it finally reached movie screens in disco-crazy 1979, it looked a little out of place. But, for its era, the music and the show's message of "make-love-not-war" was fresh and hopeful.

I was a senior in high school in Houston in 1969. Our drama dept went to NYC and saw 5 broadway shows, including Hair, with the original cast. Definitely a life changing event in my life

The Cowsills had a handful of top-40 hits, check out "The Rain, the Park, and Other Things." As a singing family they were the model for the 1970s TV show "The Partridge Family."

My father took us to see a production of “Hair” in Vancouver, B.C. When I was fifteen or sixteen, I think in the early 1970’s. If ever there was a musical that defined an era and a generation, this was it. The music is great! Get the original Broadway cast to get the full experience. It’s “outa sight!” For your video audience though, I recommend the song from it: “Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In” from “The 5th Dimension.”

Color television first appeared in the late 1950s but it wasn't until the 1965-66 season that NBC, CBS and ABC required all new programming to be shot in color and some small market affiliates lagged behind due to cost or manufacturer availibility of color transmitters and other equipment. My dad worked at a small-town cable station that was still black & white for a couple of years after that because the color equipment - transmitter, control room monitors and studio cameras - were all backordered. But color was the universal standard by the end of the decade, though B&W TV sets were still around until the mid-'70s when smaller color sets became more affordable and widely available. "Hair" was one of the first Broadway musicals with rock music and cast nudity ("Oh! Calcutta" was another). Then The Who did "Tommy" and Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice did "Jesus Christ, Superstar", which also resulted in several covers including Irene Cara's "I Don't Know How to Love Him".

Hair with all the music was done as a Broadway stage play in the nude. Very big and popular while at the same time there were huge protests against it continuing. Great music even when it wasn't.

My dad bought our first color tv in 1961. Very few shows in color back then, Bonanza, some cartoons and some movies. The color was terrible and you had to constantly adjust it. FYI

The harmonies of this family is phenomenal. It’s a shame THEY didn’t get to be in the television show based on them….The Partridge Family. I believe it was because of their “controlling abusive father. There’s a documentary here on KZfaq that talks about their career and that father of theirs. It’s excellent, but a bit sad. Talented family who should have gone further than they did.

Man, rock musicals need to make a comeback. There weren’t enough of them in my opinion. Although a guy growing his hair long was seen as a form of rebellion, which it was to some extent, I think it was more so just a generation wanting something to call their own like those that came before and after. Long hairs were labeled hippie pinko fags by their elders and terribly harassed. You wouldn’t think something as innocent as hair could stir up such hatred but it did. Great reaction Shawn.😊

TV was all live then. The sons all wanted to the be next big group i.e.. Beatles like but their father put an end to those plans and turned them into a family band instead. Their father found out the oldest son, Billy smoked pot and threw him out of the band and the house! He was their greatest talent and the band went downhill after that. Billy died as a solo performer in Canada, Barry, 2nd youngest boy died in Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. The youngest son, John has been the Beach Boy's drummer for at least 30 years now! Susan, Bob and Paul are still performing yet. I got to see them at the Iowa State Fair in 1973. Great reaction choice!

I went to see the road company of HAIR in 70 or 71 in Milwaukee. I was still in highschool and thought I dressed up, jeans and a " nice " shirt that I even tucked in and a pair of boots. We got there and ALL these " old " people were in tuxedos and evening dresses. I'm thinking to myself why, cuz all the cast members get naked in the production. Gotta tell I didn't feel very comfortable because of the way i was dressed at first but when the lights went down and the cast came down the aisle naked, I felt pretty darn comfortable.

You need to check out a studio album that has a poem before the song is called the fire poem. The song is fire on the album The crazy world of Arthur Brown... So the poem will break into the song "Fire"

the length of a young man's hair in the 60s was a big confrontational point between kids and their parents. it seems ridiculous today,but if you didn't have a crew cut or other "man's haircut" (short back and sides) you were labeled as being a radical hippie or gay. it started with the beatles' moptops,and became a symbol of the anti-establishment movement. the line "my hair like jesus wore it,hallelujah i adore it,hallelujah mary loved her son,why don't my mother love me?" was direct and to the point. it showed the hypocrisy of parents refusing to accept their male kids with long hair while insisting they be god fearing followers of jesus who himself is portrayed as having long hair. the line was omitted from radio airplay (and in the cowsills video you watched). as the 60s ended and the 70s began it was clear long hair on males was here to stay, solidified in 1976 when jimmy carter became the first modern day president with hair covering the tops of his ears.

Yeah, the 60's musical IS a "period piece", so you have to go into watching it with that in mind, but it's a great film (was a touring play as well) with lots of great songs, that also serves to give you a view into the mindset of that time. However, in the 1979 version (movie), you'll see a few very famous actors such as John Savage, Treat Willliams, Beverly D'Angelo, Charlotte Rae, Nell Carter (Gimme A Break) and Ellen Foley (see her credits alongside Meatloaf, the singer).

I saw the Broadway play. It was fabulous and iconic. The live version from of this song from that actual play is far more soulful and moving, and not pop, taking nothing away from the Cowsills version, which us good pop. But if you saw the play, it is a MUCH stronger vibe of the real 60’s rather than the commercialized version here.

Wow, I never considered the Cowsills bubble gum pop and I don't think most people did either. Yes, remember this song very well. I believe this was their biggest hit although The Rain the Park and other things is still on every playlist I own to this day. Never heard anyone not liking that song and younger people like my own kids even hearing it first time loved it not knowing it was a 60's hit song.

Not just a good song. If you grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, growing your hair long was a sign of rebellion and independence for teens -- especially boys. Same with wearing bellbottoms and platform heals. I look at them in this video and the hair and the way they're dressed takes me back to when I was a teen and this youthful rebellion was happening and we were all part of it.

And what a Revolutionary Musical 🎶 all about rebellion through wearing one's hair long or different because guys in 20's 30's 40's and 50's didn't wear long hair...long hair was for women and short hair was for men...and in the 60's guys rebelled and wore their hair long to go against gender status quo....and then came the Broadway Musical, "Hair. " You short react to the whole Musical. 😊

Guys used to wear their hair long in the very old days. Soldiers returning from WWI had short hair for lice and hand-fighting purposes, and that remained the common style for decades until The Beatles arrived with their moptops -- and changed everything.

I was in my college production of HAIR back in the eighties I was the sexually ambiguous "Woof" So much fun. My parents wanted to come see me, however, I encouraged them to watch the movie version (on beta, no less) and suffice it to say they did not go. They were very very conservative.

Hair was made into a musical and was very successful(According to Billboard, the various productions of the show were raking in almost $1 million every ten days, and royalties were being collected for 300 different recordings of the show's songs, making it "the most successful score in history as well as the most performed score ever written for the Broadway stage.")

Some TV shows insisted the music was performed live Others allowed them to lip sync. Ed Sullivan and Shindig and Johnnyt Carson were alwayts live. American Bandstand was lip sync. Not familiar with this show but this looks like lip sync.

In the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, most "live" performances were lip-synced to the studio recordings. But the results were still pretty darned entertaining nevertheless. This video is a perfect example.

By the way…Hair was very controversial at the time. Not only for its counter culture vibe, but for the all nude scene by every cast member. I saw it here in LA, and it was restricted to the stage. But I heard the original New York production had everyone in their birthday suit dancing and singing in the aisles, handing out daisies.

They left out the lyrics from the original song: "My hair like Jesus wore it, Halleluiah I adore it, Halleluiah Mary loved her son, why don't my mother love me"! The musical Hair was a big deal at the time and is still being performed on stage today.

Hair was quite a political statement in the 60's. You could get in serious shit if you walked into the wrong place. Hence a whole musical around hair. The play (from which this song comes) was also the first major Broadway production to show nudity. It stirred the waters for quite a while.

It was a huge Broadway hit and for its time controversial with nudity on stage which was pretty risqué. The play captured the 60s counterculture and how hair was a symbol of rejection of the status quo and the Vietnam war. You could almost always tell someone with similar values by the length of their hair.

From even before The Beatles the 'younger generation' started growing their hair longer. Parents were horrified by The Beatles! Really, they were. As The Beatles got more and more 'extreme' they represented the love and flower generation. Finally, kids said 'ENOUGH, it is only hair'. The 'Hair' musical was an in-your-face "get over it" cultural statement. It was shocking and wildly popular. But the Vietnam War brought the culture clash to a head and as the protests got more violent those with long hair were seen as radicals, communists, you name it (does this sound at all familiar?).

And if it wasn’t for those radical protests, we would still be in Viet Nam fighting. Thank the gods for the counter culture movement, the hippies, the protesters, all those who bucked the system and the Nixon regime. And thank the gods TODAY for Antifa (ANTI=against FA=fascism) and all those who believe in protecting our DEMOCRACY and not a dictatorship! (sound familiar?)

I saw this musical live at the Aquarius Theatre on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood when it first came to Los Angeles (I am guessing around 1968 or1969). It was a show with some nudity and was very controversial at the time. There were older people showing up in fur coats and such (not the type of theatre where you would expect such fancy clothes) who got all freaked out and went storming out of the theater like they hadn't read the reviews and didn't know that there were going to be naked people crawling over people in the audience or something. They did leave the house lights off so all you could really see were silhouettes but you could see that people were naked and that they were both men and women, but it was not offensive in my opinion, particularly if you knew ahead what was going to be happening. Anyway, it was a fun musical and I enjoyed it, fun night and I still remember it. The music was great and the cast was incredible.

Yeah, I don't know who these people are who are saying everything on TV back then was live. Being taped in front of a live audience doesn't make something live. A lot of people here seem confused about that.
