The Cowsills were a family band of brothers, one sister, and their mother and three of them were pretty young when this song came out. They had an abusive father who sabotaged a lot of their career. The TV show "The Partridge Family" is based on them.

The best voice of the group belonged to Bill. He sang lead on their big hits. He was caught by his dad smoking weed and his dad kicked him out of the band. The Cowsills had no more hits after they lost Bill. He continued to perform solo until his death. Barry lost his life to Katrina in 2005. John is the Beach Boy's drummer now and has been for 2-3 decades.

I did not know the Partridge Family is based on the Cowsills..... very interesting. Was this song their only hit ?? It’s funny Angela brought up the Partridge Family in her response , very interesting. Sad too that an abusive father caused their career to end. From what I hear they could have produced other popular songs .

Finally, a reaction on The Cowsills. And a great song at that. Per Wikipedia: Originally recorded in late 1966, with Bill Cowsill on lead vocals, the backing vocals of his mother, Barbara, were added onto the finished product after the initial sessions, at Kornfeld's suggestion. The song was originally recorded at A&R Studios in New York with Brooks Arthur engineering the session. The song is known by many as "The Flower Girl". That was its original title, but MGM Records president Mort Nasatir suggested that the title be changed in order to avoid confusion with Scott McKenzie's contemporaneous hit single, "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)". The new title was coined by Kornfeld.

Right... the producers of the Partridge family TV show wanted the Cowsill siblings to star in the show but they wanted Shirley Jones to play the mother... so they backed out of the deal... the producers had to scramble to find a new cast... apparently they still wanted to do the show since the groove at that time were family bands...

@@skye1631 the abusive, controlling father, Budd Cowsill, was behind the backout. If Barbara couldn't play the mom, it was no dice. You can only wonder what a different show TPF would have turned out to be with the legit Cowsills playing themselves!

This was an actual family singing Rock group. Mom, brothers and sisters, from ages 9 to 18. The TV show "The Partridge Family" was based on this real life family of Rock n' Rollers. Yes they had beautiful harmonies. As it showed in the video, a few of the family have passed away. But the rest are still performing to this day. Mom is gone, and a couple of the siblings as well. Their was never a father in the Band. This family was so talented.

Things about this song: 1. It takes me back to Grade 8 and my first girlfriend, who was a bit of a hippy with "flowers in her hair", and this song was on the radio at that time; 2. The song was co-written by Artie Kornfeld, who wrote another song "The Pied Piper" which became a hit when it was recorded by a UK guy named Crispian St. Peters; 3. Kornfeld was also one of the main promoters of the famous Woodstock festival; 4. the Cowsills were the inspiration of the TV show "The Partridge Family"; 5. one of the Cowsills... Barry... was living in New Orleans and killed by Hurricane Katrina

My favorite version is when they got together in 2005 to do a benefit concert for their brother Billy's medical bills. Barry Cowsill can be seen in the video wearing a hat on the right of the stage. He disappeared during Katrina, was found on Dec 28th, and identified on Jan. 4th. Billy finally succumbed to his illness the day before Barry's memorial service.

I had the rare opportunity to meet Billy-Bud back in 1995 when he was on the road with the Blue Shadows. They were scheduled to play in a local night club and, a couple of hours before the show, I approached him a couple of times and the second time, I pulled out a paper bag and out slid an original 45 copy of this song. That's when he knew why I was there and a delightful conversation soon took place. He pulled the record out of the sleeve and help it up in the light and ended up stunned. 'This is like MINT!', he scoffed. I also brought a reissue and he signed that as well. Near the end of our meeting, he leaned back, smiled and shook his head and said, 'Aww, YOU must be a record collector!'. He had mentioned that he had signed posters and CDs of the Blue Shadows, '...but I've seen nothing like THIS!' when referring to the record I brought with me. It was a meeting for all time and it went much better than I expected.

This would have been far more popular than it already was, if the name would have been "The Flower Girl" or "I Love the Flower Girl", since the title is hardly any help at all. When this was out, circa '70, Charlotte's Big WAYS radio station held a weekend long contest, where listeners could vote up or down between two songs, and it would carry on until there was a final winner. It came down to "Fire and Rain" by local boy, James Taylor, and this Cowsills flower child special. And this song won. Charlotte is groovy that way.

@@sorrystaunton I don’t believe they were in it for profit or even appearances. Several years ago when I first noticed them, I did some poking around. Looks like they were mainly family and friends, several of which went to the same college. They had (have?) a Facebook page, but it hasn’t been updated for a good while, I don’t think. They were my favorite KZfaq cover band for a while, until I discovered some other good ones - Leonid and Friends, Lexington Lab Band, and The Hindley Street Country Club, to name a few. Check them out if you haven’t previously
