Philip Markoff was an average guy with a fiance and promising future in the medical field. The only problem was that he was living a double life as a thief and a killer.

Jiles did not explain the context of the situation. Megan was famously supportive of Phil at first, thinking he was innocent. The public knew that because she made statements about it. Eventually, she was convinced Phil was guilty, made one last visit to him in jail and broke it off. The lawyer then made the statement of behalf of Megan.

What a scummy roommate, deliberately going through all of her belongings before her family had the opportunity to retrieve them, to find something she could make money off of, and selling Julissa’s diary to the press. Sad that she saw Julissa’s brutal murder as a chance to grab some cash.

The fact that he wrote Megan’s name in blood before his grand unaliving might lead one to think he was sooo in love with her or that he was so very sorry to her. After what he did? 🙄 Nah, I don’t think so. Dude probably hated women at some level. I think in some sadly, twisted way, he probably viewed her as some kind of pure angelic savior from his own degeneracy and perversions, she was his shot at “normalcy”. I’ve unfortunately known men pretty similar to that, and they usually put those “saviors” through hell because they’ll actually resent them for not being what they truly want. But then, they need them for appearances and the hope of being “normal”. HINT: It doesn’t work. 🤦‍♂️

I never heard anyone mention that Julissa was in recovery. When you were describing her 9th step- her amends- I felt that in my guts. I was doing my 9th as well but had just relapsed. April 2009. But in May 2024 I will walk with my phd and 14 yrs. That could have been her. I could have been her. I don't need to have known her to know she was so brave, its a deep hole we crawl out of. It's a reminder for me to not take this for granted. Thanks for keeping it green Jiles.

I always got the vibe that it wasn't his intention to kill Julissa but instead he reacted in a violent panic when she put up a struggle. That said after that murder I do think he would've been much quicker to violence in future crimes if he had gone uncaught. Also I still think his crimes were motivated by some sort of sexual thrill, the stealing of underwear is a big indicator of that to me. In addition no evidence of black mail was ever found on his computer to my knowledge
@katmanluke7187
@katmanluke7187 4 ай бұрын
Didn't intend to kill her? "Violent panic"? Interesting word choices. Here's some... Generally, putting several bullets into a petite unarmed woman when he could've just as easily punched & knocked her out a few min allowing his scot free escape screams yeah he intended to kill her & no he wasn't very bright! Poor Julissa did not deserve such an end. Sadly, compounding this tragedy it's highly likely had she been armed & feigned compliance she could've executed justice on this monster the court failed to long before the coward had the chance to off himself. And she'd still be alive.
@ayok101
@ayok101 4 ай бұрын
@@katmanluke7187 I don't mean to minimize what he did so maybe panic isn't the right word. He reacted with hyper violence in a situation in which he had all the physical advantages like you said. It's entirely possible he intended to ramp up his sadistic tendencies with every robbery but using a firearm in a busy hotel? Idk to me it seems like he was expecting the whole process to be like the first robbery, when it didn't go that way for him he lost his shit and instead of trying to subdue her any other way, went straight to violence. I could also be very wrong, like you said he didn't seem very bright when it came to committing crimes (thank goodness) and had zero sense of self preservation.

Not sure we want to trash Megan. She'd wear pink-lensed glasses. It's easy to be smart from the outside. Cat, the former girlfriend of Chandler Halderson, was in a similar position. She was in a love fog the whole time, up until the nasty truth backed with evidence came out in its entirity. She is intelligent and smart (so is Megan, I assume), but feelings, imagination and emotions are governed by a separate segment of your brain from the segment that's in charge of logical thinking& reality-based cognitive activities

As long as no one is getting hurt, that doesn't want to get hurt, it's really no ones business. Im sorry you feel stigmatized, considering most people have at least a little bit of a kink. I will never understand how Americans can be so over sexualized but also be prude at the same time. I wouldn't consider myself part of the bdsm community, but some of the nicest people I know participate.

Unfortunately, shame was attached to his. I think that’s the big difference. Some kinks are handled in a mature and healthy way, but then, others are attached to negative things like shame, guilt and anger, and this is what results. Thank you for your honest take on the media, I remember when this case was ongoing and how horrid I felt when I was reading the stories of these women. Truth be told, I've known a few who have been in their position. I knew a couple who were like Alyssa but did not have the drive to escape the life and who have since disappeared from my life. it absolutely chills my blood that the press is as thirsty for lurid stories as they always have been. It's one reason why I don't respect the profession anymore, and there is a special place for that scummy roommate who sold off private possessions and her diary for goodness sake. I've always thought that when I die. People should burn my possessions. But things like pictures or anything that I wrote should go to family. Just makes me angry all around.

And I’m sure being involved with healthcare he should/would/could’ve been able to identify that something was wrong with that. That it’s not remotely normal. He was in a better position to identify and address his issues than most. So no sympathy for him here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Love what you are putting out. However, out of respect for our profession, we aren’t masseuses we are Licensed Massage Therapists. There is a difference and the latter refers to an old idea of what we actually do for a living. Sec work is never a part of our scope of practice.

I think that's exactly why he called them masseuses, bc these women didn't have the license and that's what they called themselves in their ads. One of them "trained under a licensed massage therapist" but I also think he was often quoting or referencing the news articles themselves in many instances. He seems to have a lot of respect for sex workers so I'm sure he respects LMTs as well, at least from this vantage point.

Life & humans are the weirdest things... Some people struggle all their life's to find success, a loving partner, financial stability, also wishing they were good looking & smart. THEN you have these weird people who have almost everything that most people want.. Yet they throw it all away, are unhappy, hurt other people, take everything they have for granted, etc. Humans really can be one of the weirdest creatures..

I feel you. I watch him and Mrballen on a regular basis. For a while last year, about 6 months, I had to stop watching all true crime. I think there is something depressing about overexposure to it. Not genius level observation here, just my own experience. It makes you want to plug back into the matrix if you catch my drift.

@@purschannel1155 Same. I love Mrballen, and Fascinating Horror, too. They all have a way with respectfully and skillfully telling these stories. But I have to take months-long breaks on this kind of stuff or risk letting paranoia, increasing misanthropy, and anger/sadness on behalf of the victims take up too much space in my thoughts. There was one story on here ("She Survived, But She Didn't Live,") that was particularly devastating it made me cry a few times.
