I have been going through the comments, a lot of you wonder why I did not know this song and actually knew the cover by Bad Wolfes well this song was released 1994 I was born 1996 so yeah that’s that . But what actually surprised me was the fact that people judged me by smiling at this , I do understand lyrics it’s not the first time I hear it, but it is the first time I experience Dolores and the Cranberries . Is it that bad that her beautiful voice makes me smile ? That I find beauty in her expressions, emotions and performance ? Judging a person’s ways of expressing is not right , making them feel bad or guilty just because they don’t feel the way you do is not to be done . I am very implicated in everything that’s regarding my channel from the recording to the replying and reading comments as well I am honest and admit if I recognize the lyrics or the song . This is a song that truly changed the world for a time. There is real power in music.

The song was written in 1994 hoping for peace in Northern Ireland. For a song with a connection to a specific situation and filled with such power and raw emotion, only those who have written it and lived through the reality can do it justice. Covers, however well intentioned and respectful can't even scratch the surface. RIP the one and only Dolores.

Dolores' voice was pure magic. Wifey and I saw the play, and their show was 3 hours long!! They literally played their entire catalogue and her voice was just starting to go at the end. They worked their asses off for their fans, and I was actually shocked at how high that concert ranked in my (rather long) list of great concerts.

When the Bad wolves did there version. it was supposed to a Collab. but when Delores Passed away shortly before they were going to record, it became more of a tribute to her instead, hence the symbolism of the golden makeup on the girl on the other side of the glass in the ne version

R.I.P. Dolores. Her music played a big part in me and my husband's life when we first got together at a young age. We now have four beautiful children and the kids blast this song now in the house. I'm sure our grandchildren one day will be doing the same thing. That was an awesome reaction to this great band and gorgeous singer.

My family are from Northern Ireland and we moved away in 1996 after the troubles. It really was a horrible time. Remembering it is horrible but this song makes it ok. The Cranberries would want us to enjoy the music. Loved your reaction.

Limerick man here. Breaks my heart everytime i hear 1916. I also was a teacher in a summer school in limerick with italian and spanish students learning english. Every week we picked a song to learn lyrics to and on fridays we would get all the classes together to sing it together in the hall. The first song was this. The kids loved it so much we just did a cranberries song every week. It was amazing to see 300 teens with english as a second language belt these songs out.

There’s obviously no way anyone could have covered this faithfully, but the fact that they did so is a tribute to the original. It’s a work of art, a song about tragedy sung by a person whose life was eventually tragic.

This song always hits hard for me. I have some partial Irish heritage. The subject is so grave but still must be addressed. I applaud The Cranberries for writing a heavy song that covers such an important topic. Rest In Peace to Dolores, unfortunately unable to overcome her demons in the end. Her addiction may have taken her but we have her voice forever.

The cranberries will always be missed. Dolores's voice is otherworldly and angelic. I really when this song first came out, it blew me away because it was so freakin heavy and melodic at the same time.

the mid 90's were an amazing time for alternative rock (as we called it back then..).. Shifting from Grunge with Pearl Jam or Nirvana over to Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots to the likes of Radiohead, Cranberries, Skunk Anansie, Bush or the Offspring.. there are way too many amazing bands from that time to mention..

It’s a great song and It was written about an IRA bomb in Warrington,England that killed two schoolchildren….here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA. "The IRA are not me. I watched a concert on T,V with the Cranberries. Instantly fell in love with Delores voice. Within a month I had 4 CDS the raw raspberry growl of her voice is very unique to her. I have heard noone who could match it. .

What she is doing (vocally) is called "keening". It's an antiquated Irish singing style designed to lament or mourn, typically at a funeral or wake. This is a very deep song. While it eludes to "the troubles" which was an ongoing conflict between Catholics and protestants in Ireland it also refers to a specific incident where two innocent children died in a random bombing.

It's just awesome. This video is a masterpiece. The music is marvelous. It's mostly soft, silent and slowly but so powerful, emotional and expressive. No cover is comparable with such an original song. It's another dimension of music. Can't stop hearing it.

Still got the seven inch single from '94. That was the year they burst onto the scene in the UK with the single Linger although I think they gained a bit of traction in the US first. This song was clearly about the troubles in Northern Ireland though as I recall, I think it was specifically inspired by the Warrington bombings on the mainland the year before, a town just down the road from where I grew up. I was in college when this came out. It was a great year for music. But when this first played on MTV we were stunned, and knew we heard something important.

As soon as you smiled, I knew you felt the same about Dolores as we all do! She was an amazingly, talented woman and she will always be missed. And The Bad Wolves version of this song is very powerful and hit me hard knowing that Dolores was going to sing on that record with them. So you listen and enjoy! Specifically, this song is about "the Troubles" in Northern Ireland, which was an unofficial civil war over the question of whether Northern Ireland should be a part of the UK or a part of the Republic of Ireland. It was also very much about Catholic versus Protestant values, a theme that has plagued British history since the 1530s. The line "It's the same old theme since 1916," is a reference to the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916, which was brutally repressed by the British. The Republic of Ireland came into being in 1922, first as a member of the British Commonwealth, but it later left the Commonwealth to make its own path. But the Republic never included the six counties around Belfast (which remain a part of the UK).

I don't know if anyone has told you the story. The Bad Wolves version was originally supposed to be a colab with Delores. It was actually going to be a re-imagined version of the song. The day filming was to begin they found Delores drowned in her bathtub. What an unmitigated tragedy. I am tearing up just thinking about it. The Bad Wolves instead of just canceling the video altogether, decided to turn the song into a cover and Tribute to Delores. Dolores O'Riordan is one of my favourite singers of all time... If I had a Cranberries suggestion it would probably be Promises, the video for the song...

Beyond her fantastic voice, Dolores was a poet and composer of the first order. The lyrics of this song are so compelling and heartfelt. Since the dawn of the millennium and all the terror threats post-Sept 11th, 2001, folks have largely forgotten the Irish troubles, which stretched bloodshed, hatred and loss throughout the 20th century. The spectre of this recent violence raised some fears during Brexit, but even then, they were downplayed and largely ignored. The Irish troubles should not be forgotten; they should be an enduring lesson on the toxicity of religious and cultural division with the violence and horror it brings to all involved.

I appreciate that you were smiling at the beauty of her voice and the power of the song. It was also very clear that you started noticing that the images in the video weren't matching up with the feeling you had listening to the music and vocal performance. As a reactor, especially when listening to bands who made music before 2000, you might find that the lyrics, and the stories behind the lyrics, are essential to the reaction. I saw a lot of concerts in the 1990's. Name a 90's band, I probably caught them. The Cranberries I saw 3 times. The first time was a random dreary Tuesday at a small venue. $3 at the door. The opening act was Counting Crows, who nobody had ever heard of, it was 3 months before their debut CD dropped. They blew the roof off the place. It was a half full venue, and they had the energy for a stadium. I got to talk with Adam Duritz for a few minutes after they played, while the roadies loaded them off, and The Cranberries on. He was just chilling side stage, and was the kindest soul. Then the Cranberries came on, and I was right up front. Delores was no more than 10' away for the entire show. I was instantly mesmerized by her. Easily one of my top 5 90's concert memories. I was crushed when she passed.

This song actually perfectly compliments “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and also “Please” from U2, who are btw also an Irish band. Would love to see and hear your first reactions to those songs as well!!

Dolores sang in a Keening style, its the Irish lament for the people that passed, this record at the time, could of got them in a whole pool of trouble, as the Troubles where still ongoing in Northen Ireland, and its a perfect song, at the time of writing im in tears for the wasted lives, and the passing of Dolores

The troubles are still simmering away. We are lucky to live during a time where the majority from both sides of the argument want no more fighting but to try and continue to find a peaceful answer despite the best efforts of those that want a return to violence!

Hey Bisscute, you should check out Bad Wolves version, there's a brilliant story that goes with it : Basically Delores was going to be featuring on it after they'd spoken about it and on the morning of the recording day, Delores was found dead. The band spoke to her Mum and said they weren't going to go ahead with the cover, but her Mum said please do it as Delores was really excited about the whole thing, so they ended up doing it and all the money they made from it they gave to her children.... the video is really good as well, as they have a woman who kinds looks like Delores, painted gold behind a pane of glass, covering the glass with the paint.

This song was supposed to replicate the sounds of war(bombs exploding, machine-gun fire, etc.) and somehow Dolores and Co. were able to achieve that, at least for me! She had a very unique and powerful voice that could tug at your heart something wicked. She WILL be missed, but this song plays a lot in my playlist lol!
