Dolores O'Riordan said specifically that she wrote this song after The Cranberries 1993 English tour....during which The IRA planted 2 bombs in Warrington which resulted in the deaths of 2 young boys.....She wrote the song back home in Limerick after seeing on TV the devastation caused to one of the mothers of the boys.....and a quote taken from the BBC reads......The singer was particularly offended that terrorists claimed to have carried out these acts in the name of Ireland."The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA," she said. "The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. "When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland, it's some idiots living in the past."...... She also refused a $1M cheque from her record label not to release this song......RIP the Lovely Dolores who left us in early 2018.

@@22grena Polish people did not plant a single bomb nor hurt anybody to get their freedom from Soviet Union in 1989. Yes, from Soviet Union. Perhaps if IRA wasn't violent, you would get your freedom sooner. Violence leads to more hatred. Ireland had every right to demand independecne, but no right to hurt people. Ireland should not have try to get their independence the IRA way. They should have done it the Cranberries way.

@@22grena Warsaw uprising was during actual war and it was aimed at military forces, not civilians. And USSR collapsed for a reason - there was series of protests all across baltic countries. Again - none of them had anything to do with planting bombs. So if you want to justify IRA activities, you should choose different comparisons. Of course if you can point out to any violence targeting civilians that can be justified at all. You missed the point of my comment completely.

@@22grena But they did have "their bombs and their bombs", didn't they? You're being very selective to which words of the song to listen to. I really suggest you read about why and when Dolores wrote that song, before you draw conclusions as to what she is actually singing about. She was not taking sides, but condemning blind violence

The British government have plenty of childrens blood on their hands. They used rubber bullets on them and murdered Irish Catholic peace protesters on a Civil Rights march. Go look up the facts before you comment on an issue you know nothing about.@@christophergamedev

This song actually did help in ending the Troubles. And of course two young kids dying while shopping for Mother's Day in itself drew attention. "Child is slowly taken" refers to it taking five days for little Tim to die. Burn wounds are nasty.

The Troubles is a term used to describe a period of conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years, from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 and she was singing about all the unnecessary deaths as a result of this conflict including a 3 year old who was blown up in a busy shopping area and then a 12 year old a week later there were many more though beaten and killed. The main participants in the Troubles were republican paramilitaries such as the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA); loyalist paramilitaries such as the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and Ulster Defense Association (UDA); British state security forces such as the British

There's another reason why many people are not aware of its meaning. Both the British and the Irish television refused to broadcast the video at the time. So a lot of the world saw a mashup of live footage from the band that the BBC made instead. The video was apparently a bit too sensitive, also because a lot of it is real footage shot under the guise of making a documentary. Oh, and it wasn't a mother and a child that was killed. It were two children.

The conflict was between two communities in Northern Ireland. The IRA and INLA wanted to break away from the UK while the UDA UFF and UFV wanted to keep it part of Britain. Those are the symbols you're seeing on the walls. To keep the communities apart the UK sent in its troops. This led to a 30-year terrorist campaign by the IRA which was responded to by the loyalist terror groups. The IRA would plants bombs and one their bombs killed two little boys outside Harrods in London while they were shopping for Mother's day cards. This - after more than 3000 deaths sickened Delores and she wrote this song basically saying STOP IT! The line about 1916 is a reference to the Dublin uprising which saw more than 1000 people lose their lives. She is saying that those committing these unjustified acts of terrorism (from both sides) and thinking your still fighting like in 1916 means you are brain dead - a ZOMBIE. I'm a Catholic from an N Irish family.

Couple of things. This was over N Ireland. As mentioned in the song Britain and groups of Irish Loyalists were engaged in on again off again attacks since 1916 in it's latest incarnation. So well over 80 years in it's current form (This goes right up there with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict for hard headed intransigent people convinced that God is on their side) anyway things had died down a bit in the 90's but there were still sporadic attacks. Once such attack was a bombing on the British Isle killed 2 little boys about ages 3 and 8 IIRC. This is a cry of anguish from someone who (as many were) just tired of it all, they didn't care so much as they just wanted to stop with all the killing.

I'm from N Ireland and Catholic. This is about the IRA (CATHOLIC) terrorists and PROTESTANT terrorists killing each other and murdering innocent people. You tried to make it out to be solely about loyalists and Britain being the killers. That is so nuts and so far from reality - it was about the IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY (terrorists) killing two innocent children in a cowardly bomb attack outside Harrods London when they planted bombed in litter bins on a busy street full of people. The children were shopping for Mother's Day cards. Earlier, the British sent its troops to keep the warring communities apart but then the IRA turned and started killing the soldiers sent in to protect their community. Though the first shot that killed ANY soldier was fired by a loyalist gunman. Then some British soldiers (PARAS) during a civil rights march killed and shot more than a dozen innocents people and the whole thing just spiralled out of control... more than 3000 people died in tit-for-tat murders by the IRA/INLA and the protestant side the UVF, UDA and UFF etc. The British also ended up killing innocent people... it was a complete mess driven by hatred and the IRA's desire for a unified Ireland whilst the UVF etc were fighting to keep N Ireland part of Britain. No one came out of it without blood on their hands. The song is saying they were brain-dead like ZOMBIES, fighting a war that started in 1916...

Zombie's is a cry of anger to soldiers that follow orders, such as killing kids, like the soldiers are brain dead and wont stand up against their orders that may mean killing civilians. RIP Delores

Yeah, sorry but it's impossible not to know of the problems in Northern Ireland. Perhaps its an age thing but i'm constantly amazed that today's generation with its access to the internet remains so ignorant of history and struggles to understand that a journey was undertaken to get us to today. Change happens over time, and right is always subjective. I grew up in Australia and PNG, the opposite side of the world but the struggles in Northern Ireland dominated the media in my country for decades and i was always well aware of everything that occurred. As an Australian who is about to face a referendum to elevate one race above all others, i find this song more poignant than ever. I'm betting the next rendition will be much more emotional.

It appears that the Irish Republican Army (IRA) set of bombs in ENGLAND and two boys were killed. The vocalist sings, “It’s not me. It’s not my family….” She is stating that though she is Irish, she and her family is not the guilty party. Because what can happen, and does happen, is that those who are grieving will blame all of Ireland, blame all the Irish, for something that a small group of Irishmen carried this evil. This attitude happened when men Pearl Harbor was attacked. Or when the towers fell on 9/11

About Northern Ireland being occupied by Great Britain. They were regularly attacked by Irish Republican Army (IRA). A child was killed in a bombing and that's what this sound is about. The sound in the music is called keening...common mourning sound in Irish tradition.

Mostly parts of Belfast destroyed industry was on the way out, no jobs only poverty and old war festered. A lot of Belfast industry went directly to China, where cheaper labour was won for us and amazon

Not sure I love the disparagement of the yodel. I think that sound is unique and maybe it's meant to suggest crying. I also notice that Dolores, while all golden and goddess-like, still takes pains NOT to make grimaces and to make sounds that are not meant to be 'beautiful,' and since all of the kids show are boys, and there are no females in the 'movie' aspect of the video, I think these things combine to focus on boys' and men's need to fight and to kill ... like zombies. I'm sure she could sing without the 'yodel' if she so chose. It's all in the service of her fury at some kids that were killed in 'The Troubles.'

Late to the party: A 1990s song about War of Resistance to today Israel and Gaza is the reason I am listening to it now... no one has learned history apparently, and for the group I miss you all especially Delores; we lost not only a very beautiful singing voice, just a humanitarian where she should be here for now. Love the song at first, until really listening, I missed songs what they are conveying, not just for entertainment and The Cranberries nailed it. My Apologies is back then, love the singing and instrumentation, totally miss the message until around 2010, when I went whoa and look things up. My 2 regrets are wished I caught the song's message sooner than later and Delores later on, Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ, even to this day her passing we lost an angel. This song applies to today, just a different setting... wish we can stop violence. Now tell Russia to stop as well, whole different matter other wtf for violence?
