The Cosmic Yak yep, but he wasn’t part of DT when he played on the LTE albums. Mike and John asked him to join DT after the second LTE album. I met him at Winter NAMM a few years ago. As I was talking with him, he calmly reached out and pulled gently on my goatee and just simply said, “Nice.” I started laughing; and then he, his wife, and I’m guessing bodyguard (dude was huge) all laughed and walked away. Coolest cat I’ve ever met besides Billy Sheehan when I got to see The Winery Dogs. Mike was a little stand-offish, but he still talked with me for a moment after the show.

GhostDrummer I met Mike at a drum clinic. Much shorter than I expected but that’s besides the point haha. Super cool guy and I got to ask him a question too during the clinic. He walked with us to the signing table and said to my friend who was wearing a Mike Portnoy shirt “Nice shirt I have the same one in my closet”. Was really bummed to see him part ways with Dream Theater but I’ll always love the guy

The "Bass" is called a "Chapman Stick". The player is Tony Levin from King Crimson. In the 80's and 70's he also played for/with Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, David Bowie etc. He's member of King Crimson since the early 80's. Other great Chapman Stick players are Trey Gunn (also at Warr Guitar) or Simon Fitzpatrick (plays with Carl Palmer Band, Carl Palmer from "Emerson, Lake & Palmer"). Chapman Sticks usually have 8 to 12 strings in different string configurations (like 4 bass + 4 treble, or 5 bass + 7 treble, or 6 bass + 6 treble strings etc)
@ScottGreenMusic
@ScottGreenMusic 3 жыл бұрын
The instrument Tony Levin is playing is called a Chapman Stick, which has 10 strings that covers the range of both a bass and guitar. It's played by tapping, so you can (as Tony does at times here) play both a melody and bass line at the same time. It takes INSANE skill to master, and Tony Levin is a master of masters. Edit: I wish Petrucci's solo album had all Stick as opposed to bass, so we could hear how that works against his playing without keyboards.

Liquid Tension Experiment was formed by Mike Portnoy as a side project. His initial plan was to get someone like Dimebag Darrell from Pantera on the guitars but that didn't come to fruition and then John Petrucci took the guitar spot. The chemistry of Portnoy of Petrucci has made that signature DT sound that we're so familiar with, which is why this sounds really similar. Tony Levin is on the Chapman stick and bass, he also plays with a lot of prog giants including King Crimson. Jordan Rudess is on the keyboards in Liquid Tension experiment, he has been in Dream Theater since 1999. When the first two LTE records came out Rudess wasn't in Dream Theater. Derek Sherinian was on the keys from 1994-1999, who had replaced the original keyboard player Kevin Moore at the time. After these two LTE albums, he was replaced by Jordan Rudess, as Rudess agreed to be a part of the band when Petrucci and Portnoy asked him to join Dream Theater. I hope that it clarifies everything.

Thank you. I was wandering through the comments thinking surely someone had spelled this out to him by now but hadn't seen it. Portnoy has said that LTE didn't make as much sense once Rudess joined DT, for obvious reasons. But I still would've loved some more.

That's what it's actually called, the (Chapman) Stick, Tony Levin is the guy's name (on keyboards, Jordan Rudess, also Dream Theater), and he is probably the most gifted and talented musician of the four men on stage, but certainly the most prolific and experienced musician. He's recorded I believe well over 1,000 records, with several of the greatest bands and singers of all time. Plus, he's been playing bass, and Stick, for Peter Gabriel ever since he left Genesis and went solo. And even now, in his 70s (well, not NOW now), he still tours most of the year, with several bands, including for instance King Crimson, which he's been a part of since the early 80s.

Tony Levin, Bass. Played with everyone. Heavily involved in King Crimson. Portnoy, Ex Dream Theater drummer currently Sons of Apollo and others. Jordan Rudess was invited to this project by Portnoy, and became later the current keyboardist of Dream Theater. Petrucci was pulled in to this project because none of the other choices for the project was available, so Portnoy invited his then band-mate...

I didn't catch this till someone else pointed it out on the original upload of this, but occasionally Mike hits a percussive device that to us makes no noise, but it plays a tone in the other band members' in-ear monitor that signals it's time to move on from one improvised section to the next, so they don't have to constantly look to the drummer for a visual signal.

22 here. I got bit by the prog bug three years ago, although I wish it'd happened sooner. Most people I know either love it or hate, but for me it was an acquired taste...I couldn't get behind the long instrumentals, bridges and wacky solos at first. I kept wishing they'd go straight to the point, but I was completely amazed by the attention to detail and the skill of the musicians that I HAD to try more. I was hooked after I'd heard Shine On You Crazy Diamond...and it's kind of hard not to. Luckily, the genre is so varied that I can safely say that there's a band, an album or a song for every mood a lover of rock or metal can go through. And it's quite hard to name a musical experience more thorough and more entertaining that prog.

It's a Chapman Stick and more specifically, a Grand Stick. A Stick Bass has 8 strings arranged pitch-wise like a regular bass guitar. A Chapman Stick is 10 strings with the 5 melody strings in the same order as a guitar, and the 5 bass strings inverted so that the lowest in pitch is in the venter of the fretboard. The melody strings are normally tuned in 4ths, similar to a guitar. The bass strings are tuned in 5ths, like an upright bass, but inverted. The Grand Stick is 12 strings which are 6 melody and 6 bass normally with the same tuning scheme.

Portnoy and Petrucci were part of Dream Theater from the fundation, when they played in Liquid Tension Experiment they convinced Jordan Rudess, the keyboard player, to join DT becase Kevin Moore (former DT kb player) left and the new player wasn't as good as Jordan, who didn't want to play with them at the moment, they convinced him, and the tracks you've listened of DT are actually those 3 guys. So if Jon Myung were playing bass there, it would be dream theater... That's why it sounds so similar
@alexojeda9048

So LTE originally started out with 2 members of DT: Petrucci and Portnoy. Bassist Tony Levin is from the legendary Prog Rock band King Crimson (who like to take down reaction vids of their music so don't do it) and Keyboardist Jordan Rudess was in the Dixie Dreggs ( another Prog legend). The 1st LYE album was sort of a recruitment tool to get Jordan to join DT; didn't work at first. He eventually joined DT on the Scenes from a Memory, Part 2 album so when LTE's 2nd album came out you had 3/5 members of DT in LTE. Also you probably heard the LTE song Paradigm Shift (somewhat similar to Acid Rain) in a DT video for Instrumedley where they take snippets of DT songs and piece them together to make an instrumental for live shows. That's my guess. Just subbed so thanks for the reactions.

Drew, you just have to react to Haken. Start with Haken: crystallized. Absolutely fun experience with all the funky beats they put in.

Liquid Tension was formed when Portnoy and Petrucci wanted to fuck around instrumentally. They brought on Rudess, and liked him so much they booted Derek Sherinian from DT after their bland commercial outing with him as keyboardist. Sherinian was also featured on Change of Seasons, but merely played the keys and did not have much input in the songs. He isn’t terrible, just not a good DT fit. He was involved in a decent band called Platypus. Liquid Tension helped DT indirectly by bringing Rudess on board, and the rest is history.

In my opinion this era of John Petrucci’s Ernie Ball BFR is the greatest. This is the best he’s ever sounded. The thing has so much strength on the low end and crunchy sounds on the high, it’s unmatched.

You should do a video on their song Three Minute Warning, it's a full unedited improvised jam session that is nearly ten times as long as the title suggests

Also keep in mind that LTE is born as a jam project and that's what they actually do, the song structure is the same as the studuo album but the solos are improvised. In the shows they also do a couple 10 minutes completely improvised jams which are pretty cool. Anyways as i said in another comment, go for When the water breaks next, they'll be the best 17 minutes you could wish for :)

Basically is dream theater without singer and bassist! But Tom Levine is another insane bassist.

Tony Levin. He's a legendary session musician, played on more hit records (over 500 albums) and with more top artists than you can shake a stick at. Had the pleasure of seeing him perform with Peter Gabriel a few years back (as part of the anniversary of Peter's "So" album, which they played in its entirety during the show). Great guy, and a wizard with the bass and the Chapman Stick.

Yup, LTE is basically instrumental DT but with a real unique bassist. Amazing stuff, for sure. Jordan Rudess just mentioned a couple months ago that they may get together again in the future. Here's hoping! =D

I’m telling you, pick something from the latest live video set from Steven Wilson. So many good PT and SW songs and Nick Beggs on the Chapman stick.

Keyboard extraordinaire Jordan Rudess joined Dream Theater after LTE. Sure, you're going to notice simularities to DT but these are merely pieces that arose from jam sessions. Tony Levin the bassist/Chapman Stick player has been a longtime mainstay with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. 😊

I got way into this kind of progressive music like Dream Theater, Primus, and Tool just a few years ago, and I'm only 17 so you're definitely not alone when it comes to younger people liking these genres.

A little backstory. This album was initially recorded in like 1997. Dream Theater has just parted ways with their keyboardist Derek Sherinian and was looking for a new player. This was a side project by John and Mike and essentially served as Jordan Rudess’s audition for Dream Theater. They released two albums as Liquid Tension Experiment, both are great and from around that late 90’s timeframe.

Great reaction vid! LTE is sooo good. Not every track is nonstop like that one. The two records are quite diverse, and I prefer it to DT due to the blissful lack of LaBrie. ;) Keep up the fun work! And maybe do WHEN THE WATER BREAKS, as many others have suggested. It's amazing!
