Tonight was the turn of the supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment and their song Acid Rain! This was one of this week's vote winners and i was really excited to hear it when i saw just how well it did in the tiebreaker vote!
I've not felt as on-edge as that for a while! The guitar solo was incredible! The Keyboard player was immense too!
Lots of questions after watching that!

How are u a jazz singer and ignorant of jazz keyboardists that do the same thing.. quite ignorant. I'm not going to talk about messing up Petrucci's name..

Tbh i havent heard many jazz keyboard players from the 40's and 50's mimic a metal guitar sound and play at the same speed as a metal guitarist shredding. Yes it may be that i haven't heard enough keyboard/piano, but it has nothing to do with whether i sing Jazz or not. That's what this channel is about, me experiencing new music and learning along the way.

How are you in a civilised society and ignorant of conversational etiquette? Your "quite ignorant" comment is, funny enough, quite ignorant (and rude). I hope that this guy keeps making reaction videos on this band without such unwarranted criticisms. He is doing a great job and should be credited for that!

It's basically Dream Theater (Petrucci, Rudess and Portnoy, who was the drummer before Mike Mangini) with a different bass player (Tony Levin here, using a Chapman stick, instead of John Myung) and without singer James Labrie.
@matthewhearn9910
@matthewhearn9910 3 жыл бұрын
And they formed and put out their first album before Rudess was a part of Dream Theater (their keyboardist at the time, Derek Sherinian, was their second choice to Rudess who was unavailable when he was hired). So John Petrucci is the only LTE member who has consistently been a member of Dream Theater across the supergroup's existence.
@brunohenriqueazevedoborges5490

Well, when LTE was conceived, Derek Sherinian was DT's keyboard player, so it kinda made sense back then. Then it became redundant. Now that Portnoy is out of DT, it's not redundant anymore.

Mike Portnoy was approached by Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records about the possibility of assembling a supergroup to attempt creating and recording an instrumental album in one week's time, including the writing of the music. Liquid Tension Experiment is the result. John Petrucci was the last member added (guitar), because Portnoy wanted this project to be completely separate from Dream Theater...however, when he could not find a suitable guitarist for the project, he reached out to his bandmate Petrucci was Dream Theater. Jordan Rudess (keys) is one of the best who ever played keyboards. At the time of the first Liquid Tension Experiment album's recording, he was just someone Portnoy had always wanted to work with. By the time the second LTE album was released, Rudess had also joined Dream Theater. So basically, you were watching Dream Theater's instrumentalists with a different bassist. The song you listened to/watched, as well as the rest of the album, was written basically by improvisation. A few of the members brought some beginning ideas, then the band jammed around with them to write the songs. The first album was indeed written and recorded in a week's time. Tony Levin (bass) is another guy Portnoy wanted to work with. He's from King Crimson, and he's playing an instrument called the Chapman Stick on this song (and much of the album). So far, LTE has released two albums, with another album soon to be released. There is also a related project called Liquid Trio Experiment featuring the same guys minus Petrucci. One last tidbit...Mike Varney of Schrapnel Records approached another drummer with the same idea. This drummer is Terry Bozzio. He formed a very eclectic trio featuring Steve Stevens (guitars, Billy Idol) and the same bassist as LTE, and they also created an improvisational album that was written and recorded i one week's time. Their band was called Black Light Syndrome, using the first letter of each member's last name as a template. Sorry for such a long comment! God bless!

The bassist is Tony Levin, playing a Chapman Stick. He's probably the most well-known master of that instrument. You'd know him from King Crimson's '80s lineup, and Peter Gabriel's band (all of his big hits from "Solsbury Hill" on) and he's been on dozens of other recordings since the late '70s with many, many popular artists and bands.

Dream Theater and LTE fans like myself are struggling to hold it in when you tell us you're not sure which one John Petrucci is, but that's okay, no one has to share our same enthusiasm. I'm just glad you took the time to watch and listen to these amazing musicians. By the way, LTE' genesis was a record label tapping Mike Portnoy to form a 'allstar' band and gave him freedom to pick players who might be available. While Jordan Rudess and Tony Levin are amazing musicians, when it came to choosing a guitarist, Portnoy didn't have Petrucci in mind originally, he noted that he was probably looking to distance the project from Dream Theater, but after some other guitarist considerations ran into availability issues, he came back to the idea of his Dream Theater's bandmate Petrucci as the guitarist and acknowledges in retrospect that Petrucci was the perfect guitarist for the project.

Tony Levin from King Crimson is on bass, he's playing a Chapman stick. If I remember correctly it has 6 bass strings and 6 guitar strings, I think it's almost always played tapped, and you can tap bass and treble lines simultaneously like a piano composition. Members of King Crimson and the Crimson Projekct seem to love these instruments for their compositional flexibility, and there's other instruments like the Warr guitar (played by Trey Gunn) and the Touch guitar (played by Markus Reuter) with multiple bass/ guitar strings played simultaneously to fill out the sonic space.

Isn’t it humbling, and overwhelming when you discover music you hadn’t know before? I’m near 60 years old, and I’m discovering music every day, some new, but much that’s been around, and I wonder how I didn’t discover it years ago. It’s the infinite nature of music. And it’s always satisfying to see fellow travelers discovering music just as I do.

So it IS, basically, Dream Theater with a different bassist (Tony Levin actually plays something called the Chapman Stick, which is like a 12 string bass that you finger tap on). However, at the time they originally formed, the Liquid Tension keyboardist (Jordan Rudess) was not Dream Theater's keyboardist. Because they gelled with him so well in this project, and because they were already letting their current keyboardist go (who they'd always thought of as a temporary keyboardist after their original keyboardist left them), they asked Jordan to join Dream Theater.
@lukewilson7769
@lukewilson7769 3 жыл бұрын
So what I know - this was formed basically after Rudess declined to join Dream Theater in 94 (went on to join Dixie Dregs instead) but Portnoy was still keen AF to play with him so they made LTE along with Petrucci and Levin. And then like 2 years later or something Rudess joined DT anyway haha. Side note: Petrucci wasn't Portnoy's first choice for guitar - Dimebag Darrell was!

LTE is one of the many many many bands Mike Portnoy is in. It was meant to be a Dream Theater side project back in late 90s, he asked Dimebag Darrell from Pantera (you already reacted to one of his songs) to play guitars but wasnt available then, so he asked Petrucci instead. And it is because of the success of LTE, that they both Portnoy and Petrucci invited Jordan Rudess to join DT for their album Metropolis pt 2: Scenes From a Memory in 1999.
