@Apoll0Spadeso what about the lady at the end? The lady on the airplane, sitting next to the man with the suitcases full of the virus? It’s very obviously the same lady with the glasses, from the future. She even says “I’m (in or an) Insurance” meaning she either stops him or gets infected to bring the virus back to the future where they can create a vaccine. As much as your “theory” sounds “convincing” you can’t just omit important details from the film. You know, things like…THE FINAL SCENE. lol But it’s interesting to see how much you believed your interpretation. Although, it’s completely false from what the movie is actually all about.

Well, in any case this video’s wrong about the true plot of 12 Monkeys. Cole isn’t sent back to change anything. He is sent back to so events will play out exactly as they need to so the scientist in the future can have the information they need. If Cole isn’t sent back the scientist in the future don’t find out where, when and who released the virus. We have to remember the time travel program was going on for quite a while before Cole was volunteered and the scientist already had all of the information Cole would ever give them before they ever sent him because Cole left it for them in the past to be found in the future. Most importantly to the end scene of the movie they knew where and when the virus gets released, because Cole is on the front page of a newspaper being shot in a train station with the scientist who releases the virus in the picture next to him. Everything that happens in the movie is designed by the scientist in the future to make sure Cole tries to kill Dr. Peters at the train station. Hell in the end they even give him the gun he tries to kill Peters with. Here’s some tips for understanding the 12 Monkeys. First Cole is not crazy and is never hallucinating. His erratic behavior is due to the mental stress of time travel. He tells Dr. Railly as much in the movie. If you watch whenever he jumps through time he’s wacko for several hours then begins to cams down and eventually becomes lucid again. In the movie when he thinks someone is talking to him it’s because someone IS talking to him. The homeless guy, the street preacher(who is also seen in the past as depicted in a drawing from Dr. Railly’s presentation) and many more are all people from the future directing Cole to jump through the hoops they need him to in order to make the information they need available in the future. Even his friend with the scar who he thinks was volunteered after him was actually planted to befriend Cole long before Cole is ever sent back. After all the scar he has in the beginning of the film he actually gets when he’s wounded by shrapnel while trying to find Cole who is accidentally sent to the trenches of WW1. As is said repeatedly by Cole, the scientist and the guy with the scar, the people in the past can’t be saved. Everything the future people do in the movie is about finding a cure in the future, not trying to undo the past.

Everything that you said above (in this year-old comment thread) just describes in many words what a paradox is. This is the fundamental conflict in time travel movies -- how much agency the main actors have, if any, in their lives at that point. Are they doomed to be committed to their fate as it's played out or are they making real decisions? There is no answer ... which is the entire crux of the discussion.
@THX..1138
@THX..1138 7 жыл бұрын
No it's not a paradox, they were not changing their past. Nothing Cole does changes anyone's history in any way that would effect the people in the future. Peters releases the virus, most of the world dies, the survivors are forced underground whether Cole is sent back or not. What they were doing was manipulating the past so they could learn information in the future. This would through the self-consistency principle escape it becoming a paradox. Especially because they're object Cole is unaware of their actions and thus in effect an unintelligent object.

I liked both the movie and the TV show, but Gilliam's movie is definitely not intended to be a feel-good movie - it's Gilliam at his most bleak, futile, and absurd. The apocalypse is inevitable, and there isn't much meaning to Cole's existence or his mission: he's sent back in time on the wrong track, every action he takes only ensures the outcome he would rather stop, every clue he gathers is for the wrong secret, and so on. In the end, Cole is actually responsible for the whole thing, and could not have stopped it no matter how hard he tried, and ends up setting off a loop where he dies right where the whole thing started, with his own first memory of the whole thing: he'd seen the start of the outbreak as a kid, and knew what happened all along, without realizing it. You can check out the TV series for a different take on the story, with more of a feel-good ending. But, I also recommend some of Gilliam's other fantasy/sci-fi movies, which are in some cases a little less bleak, but often even more absurd and satirical: "Time Bandits", "The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen", and "Brazil" are some of my favorites.

But: I have one important question… When cole dies at the airport, does he wake up in the “present?” Or does dying in the past end up killing you in the present? And why would the scientist go back in time instead of a volunteer? Is she sacrificing herself as well? Is she actually infected or does she have to get the vial? And if she is infected is she just banking on their ability to cure the original strain before it kills her?

Really good movie just saw it for the first time. I'm reading all these comments about the second Cole seeing the first Cole die. To me that makes no sense, it's the same person. It just so happens that in this movie time travel exist, so Cole gets a rare gift or curse of being able to see how his life ends. I believe according to the movie, time is relative and everything past, present, and future already happened. Cole states he's from the future, but he is not. He keeps having the same recurring dream, meaning all that is going to happen in the movie, has already taken place. Which you can argue it hasn't taken place for Cole yet, but we the audience know it has. Cole was never going to change anything. We were just shown Cole's part in the grand scheme of things, and how they eventually got the virus in its purest form.Which was always going to happen. I believe the movie set the rules of the concept of time being simply an illusion. Everything that has ever been and ever will be is happening right now. Again this is just my take on how I perceived the movie. All the theories are fun the read.

it isn't possible James inspired the idea as originally he was meant to be sent directly to 1996 with the virus already thought off. He was accidently sent to 1990 in the mental institution where he mentioned the idea, whether he mentioned the idea or not the virus was meant to be. I agree James will now be in a continuing loop as he died in the past, while the present and future go about living a normal life finding a cure. Young James will live into the future and be sent back and die, repeating the same act again and again. unless his employees resurrect him and teleport his body back to the future/real present where he can live his life. Maybe that's why the psychiatrist smiled at the boy as she knew he will still be alive.

The scientists do not want to change what happened. Cole never states at any time that he has been sent to change the past, only to collect a sample and find the source so that they can test their anecdote. This is confirmed by the fact that he winds up in WW1. They are working on the anecdote already because cole is unaffected by the mustard gas. But Cole gets confused, falls in love and decides to change his mission. However he did locate the source, so they sent the other scientist to continue the mission, perhaps to test the anecdote again. Seems like Jeffery Goins knows whats going on and is not crazy so Im not really sure where he fits in. Maybe he's just trying to throw off James cause he's in on it but then why does he help him escape? Then later he pretends he doesn't know him but then he tries to make James think it was his comment about monkeys that started the plan. Odd to think that the scientists accidentally sent James to the hospital where he actually instigates the whole thing. No, I think Jefferey is very quick on his feet and decided to fuck with James at that moment. My favorite movie and very hard to figure out!

The main character of the film is a homeless, former patient of a mental hospital, whose name is Bob, who suffers from a split personality. Or rather, not that suffering - he invented Cole and the world in which he lives for fun. Bob knows that Cole's world is not real, but the fictional Cole is not. Bob takes some of the ideas for Cole's world from his surroundings, where he lives - and he lives on the street, where he has the opportunity to see various inscriptions, graffiti, near a store with a pig's head on a sign - he weaves them into the world he invented. In Bob's homeless world, the air is dirty, there is a stench around - both the fictional world and Cole himself have the same features - he is dressed like a homeless person, and behaves the same way. The airport murder is Bob's flashback. The Boy in the well is Bob's childish trick. Cole's ripped teeth are a copy of Bob's actions. Ideas about total surveillance and control - Bob's ideas. Bob periodically talks to Cole when he becomes too "independent" person, or gets lost, to give a hint on what to do next. Twice Bob even "appeared" in person in front of his heroes - and they did not understand anything. But they are not given - after all, they all are Bob. By the way, pay attention to the appearance of Cole in front of the psychiatrist for the third time - first she collides with Bob, he cautiously retreats, she writes an inscription on the wall and suddenly - Cole is standing behind her, in clothes - although after a jump in time he should be naked - how did he get there? The entire movie - in the best traditions of Philip K. Dick - is just a fantasy in the head of an episodic character that no one pays attention to. All the heroes of the film are part of the life story of Bob himself, even Goins in the psychiatric hospital - Bob in his youth.

But what I'd like to know is why Kathryn says she somehow knows/recognizes Cole the first time he is taken to the mental ward when prior to that she hasn't seen him and the movie doesn't really indicate otherwise. The only example could be where she has a picture that shows him in world war 1 but she doesn't even mention that until her presentation that takes places after her first meeting with Cole.

The problem is this movie could be understood in 2 ways. The entire movie is based upon his dream. That's the only thing we know is real. We know for a fact Cole saw someone die as a young child but what we don't know if the rest of the movie is based on reality. If you notice his dream starts to become more clearer as the movie goes on which can be explained in one of two ways, both of which contradicts each other because there's ample evidence against either "realities." 1) Cole is a mentally ill man and as he meets people in the mental institution he infuse them into his reality. This can be seen in the early part of the movie where Cole is placed with other people who share an alternate reality suggesting that Cole has a similar mental problem. Also, the MRI machine he seen during his escape attempt explains how the time travel machine works which seems to confirm he's mentally ill and infusing what he sees to explain what he saw as a child. 2) The events in the movie is real and as the story goes on, Cole is able to understand his dream better because he's starting to see who the players are in this dream. Since he saw the dream as a child, he could not explain it very well but as the movie plot goes on, he has a better understanding of what he's seeing in his dream. Either way, both endings are happy ones. In the sense that he's mentally ill, he can move on knowing that he's living in a fantasy reality. As the movie goes on, Cole can be seen as accepting that he is mentally ill and begins to fill in the pieces of the story until it finally concludes in his "death" which can be seen as a rebirth freed from his mental illness since he can explain the dream despite being an alternate reality. Then there is the flip side that Cole really did die in the end but since he's able to figure out the key players of this virus, the people in the future can change it as seen by the lady scientist who sits next to the person in the end. Cole would be alive but since the future never happens, the events at the airport will just haunt him but he will go on to live his life having never met the Dr or go on this wild time travel from 2035. He explains early in the film that he has a recurring nightmare and it didn't make him insane so that would mean the adult Cole in the alternate future would simply suffer the same issue but would otherwise be normal.

The homeless guy who pulls out his teeth appeared to be right since they were not able to pull him back to the future after he pulled his own teeth. Yet when he returns to the future, he hears that man talking to him again who seems confused at why he would pull his teeth out. Suggesting that he had not traveled back in time yet and that he got the idea to pull out the teeth from Cole. Which creates a paradox loop. Not sure why the homeless guy doesnt recognize the psychiatrist later maybe he is pretending he doesnt?
@momartyr
@momartyr 8 ай бұрын
Consider the possibility that the old man is actually an earlier 'Cole' who was sent back previously, but never returned because he pulled his teeth out. The reason he doesn't recognize the psychiatrist is because she was wearing a wig in the airport when he saw her for the first time (as a child).

The film bore this out pretty clearly all on its own. So did the TV adaptation, except it arguably centered on Cole as more than just the cause of the effect which sent him back in the first place - he was also literally a living paradox which would eventually cause time itself to collapse if he was not removed from all of causality.
