Last month I had on Sam Esmail, the creator of the acclaimed television series Mr. Robot. Because the new season continues to break artistic boundaries I asked Sam back to discuss the process of creativity and how all can tap into it regardless of what we do.

*NOTES* *Discussing Creativity* *Everything Boils down to the What are we trying to say when we make art and Why?* - If you're not saying something, striving for excellence, than what is even the point in the first place? - In every detail we need to be intentional about decisions. We're not just going through the motions, enriching something with details is the storytelling part of film - In Mr. Robot, the cinematography in framing is an easy example. They're not just documenting a scene like in NCIS; get your generic, wide, Medium, close up, cut it together, make it just, "correct" they're framing Elliot up based on where his mind is at. The big head space. *Writing is Thinking* - It's constantly about problem solving, thinking about what you're going to say, going down trails and finding out why that doesn't work then doing it again - I remember Dan Gilroy talking about NightCrawler in reference to writing, and he said if he had 12 months to write a movie, he'd spend 10 months thinking, making Notes, getting the thorough outline, then 2 months of writing, and when you have a detailed outline, the script is very easy to write and you don't get writers block *PLOT vs. CHARACTERS* 10:20 - We lean on plot too much. Way too much. No one remembers plot, everyone remembers characters. - You remember who they are, their choices and decisions more so than the sequence of events that take place on screen. *Be Curious about what you find interesting about an Idea* - There's the Hollywood trick of taking 2 movies and mashing the concept together until you get something that's interesting and fits. - Stop and look at what draws you to an idea in the first place and why that idea is an important story to tell - Always start with WHY. Makes me remember a talk from Simon Sinek. Everybody knows what they do, most people know how they do what they do, few people Know why they do what they do. - If you're bringing all these people together and asking for millions of dollars to make a film, it's important to go beyond the surface level things. If it's surface level It's basically just doing it for the money, and if it's just for money, you'll have more success just being a business man. *How do you define good craft?* - There are some movies that have great craft. Well edited, well shot, well written, acted, etc. But at the end it can still miss a purpose for why it needed to exist in The first place. *Do I have the right stuff?* 15:00 - Am I talented, was I ever, will I ever be able to tell a good story, maybe you did it once, but it's been years since. You second guess yourself. - The question to ask yourself in that moment, is *do you have something you need to say that cannot be said in the way you'd like to say it by anyone else.* - Success is measured in many ways. Who cares how successful you are. Personally, I don't care, just wanting to make a living, and telling stories that you can be Proud of is good enough. - A tempting thing to do is cater to a fan service. What is it that you want to see that you can fill. *Rejection* - Rejection is key. The people and characters you see are the what you relate and resonate with the most. Having that conflict that you can overcome. - That conflict of rejection is so rich with art. Learn from it. The minute you get rejected, remember that, use that, and be humble *Having Success* - Your successes and failures will be out in the open for everyone to see - You have to be honest with yourself about what worked and what failed *The Why behind why you think a story is important to tell, is more important than the craftsmanship*

Thank you Thony. I grateful view viewers like you. Please, if you feel comfortable doing so, a company is taking a survey of our viewers with the goal of attracting sponsors so I do not have to self fund the series any more. Here is the link to the survey. goo.gl/WFk3Md

I’m currently one episode away from completing the show and am trying to hold myself from watching it as much as I can because I cannot bring myself to say goodbye to Mr. Robot. I’ve been trying to cover as many interviews, podcasts and other insightful material on it and my god was this beautiful. Thanks a lot, Mr. Barry. Discovering this channel has been a gem. Love from India!

First time watcher of your videos Barry and really enjoyed it, felt compelled to comment due to the criminally low viewership. I think if I had Mr Esmail's ear for half an hour I'd do well to temper my reverence for his brilliance with actually substantive questions but I believe you do so with aplomb. Given that you clearly have a passion for storytelling and the purveyors of stories, I'll keep an eye on what else you do!

The editor must have been trying really hard to make sure that both of the interviews with Sam Esmail were 26 minutes and 48 seconds.
