People also use the fact that he doesn't make you pick bad choices that he's god, but in the bible it's stated multiple times the devil & god make bets on what people will use their free will for & this is why he doesn't force you to make a decision he just tells you about the situations.

Red Dead 1's stranger missions are a lot more serious than Red Dead 2's. Red Dead 2's stranger missions are more comic relief.

So yeah, John found a best answer and dodged hours of nagging by staying neutral in his answer. I want Strange Man to be Josiah. I want his missions in RDR2 to make sense with Strange Man. Does he always give Arthur a choice? Or guide the old west to it's inevitable fate? He did get Dutch the police job, and kept saying "we're all the writers of our own destiny". The devil fed off the violence of the gang and now that John is redeemed (then murdered) he dropped the accent and gave up.

I always assumed he was the RDR equivalent of God. He knows all the choices and outcomes, but he lets you make the choice and reap the outcome of your own volition. I love the mission old friends, new problems. I love how Abigail is visibly jealous during the beginning and end of the mission. I wish the Strange man's quest changed something in the ending of the game, i mean, he was clearly trying to test John but in the end nothing changed tho. What I would pick as an answer to say directly what is the Strange man is a grim reaper. He puts John in a situation similar to a purgatory where he must choose between the right and wrong. Creating proves to decide John's place after his near end. The gun shots are just a signal of how many lives will end. Some people maybe misundestand this to a punishment. But it's just something unavoidable. Maybe the forth shot could be related to Jack's unknown future after his revenge

In my headcanon. The strange man is Cain, he is cursed to wander the world and anyone who strikes him will know death. John shot him 3 times and the gun jammed at the fourth. Shortly after Uncle, John and Abigail died while Jack still lives. One freaky thing is Arthur noticing the strange man at the beginning of RDR2 as he wrote it in his journal, someone that looks like Trelawny but isn't him.
