Rosemary's Baby is a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel of the same name. The film stars Mia Farrow as a newlywed living in Manhattan who becomes pregnant, but soon begins to suspect that her neighbors are members of a Satanic cult who are grooming her in order to use her baby for their rituals. The film's supporting cast includes John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, Angela Dorian, and Charles Grodin in his feature film debut.
The film deals with themes related to paranoia, women's liberation, Christianity (Catholicism), and the occult. While it is primarily set in New York City, the majority of principal photography for Rosemary's Baby took place in Los Angeles throughout late 1967. The film was released on June 12, 1968, by Paramount Pictures. It was a critical and box office success, grossing over $30 million in the United States, and received acclaim from critics. The film was nominated for several accolades, including multiple Golden Globe Award nominations and two Academy Award nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Ruth Gordon) and the Golden Globe in the same category. Since its release, Rosemary's Baby has been widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

The character of Guy Woodhouse has always presented a stumbling block for me in terms of believability within the narrative. At the onset, the viewer is introduced to Guy as a seemingly genuinely loving partner for Rosemary. This is conveyed with the interplay between he and Rosemary as they shop for an apartment. Guy is likewise presented as a no-nonsense, sharp-witted, fast talking New York City type, likewise quick to dismiss Hutch's foreboding anecdotes regarding the 'Black Bramford' spookies once they announce their plans to move. He doesn't appear to be the type who lends any credence to the supernatural whatsoever. Yet, given how Guy's character is established, we're then expected to believe that within a very short span of time while having an after dinner chat with Roman Castevet, he's inexplicably not only fully on board with the supernatural, but is also willing to sacrifice Rosemary to this diabolical plot! ...which, even if there isn't any actual supernatural element to it, would still be quite heinous, hurting Rosemary and destroying his relationship/marriage with her indefinitely. It's never made sense to me how this hard-nosed, big city type would've ever bought into the offer, and, since he's initially presented as really loving Rosemary, how or why he'd be so quick to destroy her and their marriage.

It's interesting because to me I'm the opposite. It's easy for me to believe because of the promises of wealth, power, immortality that often come in these types of films for assisting evil. Someone like Guy his career has been struggling and he's constantly looking for work and shorty after the visit he is given the job of the actor who is badly hurt. If they showed him they were capable of doing that think of all the other things they could promise him. He seemed to care more about his career than anything else in the end.

When I read Polanski's biography I felt both sad for and disappointed with him as a person. I try to separate art and artist, I think his films are great work of cinema, and a few of them are on my personal list of favorite movies. I sadly have not seen Rosemary's Baby. But I really want to. Thank you for your thoughts on the movie, it has rekindled my interest in watching it.

It's an enormous justification on my part, but I thoroughly love a bunch of Polanski's film up to and including 1976's *_The Tenant._* which, coincidentally was the last film released prior to his being convicted of raping a 13-year-old girl. After that...yeah, not so much. As for *_Rosemary's Baby,_* I'm fully in the camp that considers it a perfect film. An absolute symphony of paranoia, where even Rosemary isn't entirely sure what she believes, with plausible deniability threaded all the way through. _Almost_ all the way through. All the performances are magnificent. Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon's, obviously, but John Cassavetes deserves notice as well. He and Polanski did not get along, and it's been suggested that he clocked out during filming, just dialed in his performance. Even if this _is_ the case, it works beautifully. Guy Woodhouse is a mediocre actor to begin with, and he's been thrust into having to act the part of himself for his own wife's benefit (not to mention his own). He's awkward, detached, and bad at improvisation. He can barely bring himself to look at his wife for the majority of her pregnancy. And Sydney Blackmer's Roman Castavet is also an incredible character. He's intentionally over the top and theatrical, basking in the role of the worldly, eccentric bohemian, but it's all in service of making himself the trusted father figure and confidant Rosemary had found in Hutch before he'd been...dispatched, let's say. When someone that grand and preposterous shows a deep concern, it can be flattering and comforting to the point of losing one's judgment. Minnie's role is to keep things light and upbeat, Roman is there to keep things safe and calm, even when all evidence is to the contrary. It's love-bombing, in the modern parlance, and it isolates Rosemary so effectively that she just goes along with it. Which, in turn, undercuts any doubts she starts to have. Anyway -- love this film, love your channel, keep up the great work!

Appreciate your incredibly insightful comment. Agree with what you said. I feel like it's a movie that I will grow to appreciate more with multiple viewings. This is my first Polanski film, but I've heard a lot of positive things about his early catalogue. Appreciate you watching the review and commenting!

I loved it! I actually think the ending is really thoughtful. It shows that sometimes evil prevails and that to me is truly horrific.
